  1. I love how it looks. If you are enjoying the java fern, you should look into getting some anubias maybe. They are easy to grow but a little slower growing and come in so many different varieties and sizes. I have three or four different types in my tank just because I love how they look!
  2. Welcome to the forum! Also from Michigan here!
  3. Apparently in the Grand Rapids area you want to talk to Ben at Water Colors Aquarium Gallery. My last time I ordered from Dream Fish Tanks.
  4. Second this potentially depending on tank size. I have a school of pygmy corys and they are absolutely adorable and a lot of fun... and are everywhere in the tank but the bottom most of the time. Super cute though.
  5. Hello and welcome back to the hobby! I am also a retuning fish keeper. I figured with all the time I have to research and learn this was as good a time as any.
  6. All I can say is WOW! Those are some tank goals.
  7. Hello and welcome back to the hobby! I recently returned as well after a long break. I had a tank in high school and I loved it (even though I literally did everything wrong) but it was a bit much to keep it up in college. My family made me take the tank with me and moving it back and forth three or four times a year. Once the filter broke I just chose not to replace it at that time and to wait until I was more settled. I figured this was as good a time as any. This is my first tank in a long time and my first ever planted tank. I'm taking my time in getting it together and stocking it. that isn't stopping me from making notes on other fish I'd love to set up tanks for at some point. I'm making myself come close to finish this tank before setting up another one. I did stop in my lfs to get the rest of my corys and I asked if they had a guy with a line for tanks, since they have been hard to come by. I now have the name of a guy with connections. Connections to getting tanks special ordered. Uhhh oh..
  8. Hello and welcome! I have a tank with clown killies and pygmy corys right now. Once things settle from adding the rest of the corys, I might add some chili rasboras. In my future I'd love a tank with some threadfin and dwarf rainbowfish. There's another variety I'd like but I can't think of the name right now... I'd like to have a tank with some tetras in it, I'm really loving the congo tetras and I'd love some more killifish. Of course, the more I learn the more I add to my list.
  9. ahhhh that makes a lot of sense. I'd be hesitant to trust a place that I have had problems with and felt I wasn't getting a good value to pick things out for me. Have you looked at aquatic arts? I haven't ordered from them personally but I have heard a lot of good things about them and I see that name recommended a lot.
  10. Hello and welcome from Grand Rapids! I absolutely adore your tanks. The tank with the angels and rams is absolutely stunning and I am in love with the shell dwellers. My LFS has some and they are so much fun to watch. I'm actually getting ready to run over there and see if I can get a couple of corys to keep my poor lone one company and maybeanothertank. I mean... some more plants..
  11. Huh. Do they have a call ahead thing? One of my lfs will place a reserve phone order for you and when you show up at the store someone comes out and will run your card and thrn bag up the fish and bring them out. Maybe this is something you can suggest if they aren't ready doing it?
  12. I love both of your tanks! I am going for the wild water jungle look myself. I guess I dont mine my gardens underwater or not being a little wild and not manicured to within an inch of their lives. Nature is a little mess like me. Except weeds. Weeds are pulled with extreme prejudice.
  13. Hello! I don't see signs of impending doom on your plants so it could just be a bit of melt and acclimation. Sometimes even the plants you get locally are not established. I found i had a lot more success with my stem and other substrate planted plants when I doses with flourish advance for a few weeks. This product contains a hormone that helps stimulate root growth. A lot of the stem plants I aas getting were basically fresh cuttings and it was murder for me to get them to root. This helped me a lot and my latest batch of stems are starting to do well and look less sad. It's hard to be patient but even the healthiest plants will experience some set back and acclimation period before taking off. Don't be discouraged if some don't do well, just try something else. I have a crypt wendtii that is doing fabulous but my crypt balansae rotted and never took. Experiment and try lots of things. I've been having really good luck with anubias, hygo agustifolia, aponogeton type plants, smaller crypts and vesuvius swords. I've planted a couple of runners and harvested a couple more and brought them back to my lfs for credit and trades.
  14. Hello and welcome! I've been using a lot of the aquarium co-op products and I have been very impressed with the quality and performance. It has made this go around in the hobby easier and more successful than my last foray into aquatics. The sponge filters and airstones have been the easiest filtration. I have ever used. I am not sure I could go back to hob filters again. The only thing I had to watch at first was my dosing of easy green. My water here is pretty hard and until the plants really got going I was only doing about a quarter of the recommended dose for my tank size. My goal was to set up an appealing tank that also helped maintain a healthy environment for my fish. So far so good thanks to easy access to quality products and foods and a lot of helpful advice from both the blog posts and videos.
  15. For sure! I will definitely be sharing pictures as soon as I set it up ❤️ Step one is finding the tank I want.. I am an acrylic girl and those are hard to get locally so I'll probably have to order. Again. I hate that because it makes it harder to sneak into the house.
  16. Yesh that they are! They are super fun to watch as well. I'm believing mts is inevitable as well. I thought just one tank. I can do it... Just one. Now I want a betta, maybe a pair of wild type as well, threadfin rainbows, murder beans and more killifish. 😅
  17. I start my mornings with coffee and some fish meditation as well. Sometimes with a cat on the lap also. Definitly. A great way to start the day.
  18. I think your tanks look lovely. I especially love the white cloud tank. Artificial plants have come sooooo far since I started my first tank almost two decades ago now? Yikes. I happen to like live plants but I am an avid gardener and more plants is more plants as far as I am concerned, but I also know they aren't for everyone. I'm sorry someone was nasty to you about it. In the end they are your tanks and whatever makes you happy and makes you enjoy the hobby is what you should do. Im glad this is a supportive and helpful community without the negative Nellie's and nastyness. Also, since I haven't said it yet, welcome!
  19. Lovely tank and lovely betta. I originally was going to do a planted community tank with a betta... then I got killifish instead. Oops. Guess I just need another tank for the betta. Oh well 😛
  20. It looks super amazing. I started my first planted tank this summer and I've been doing a lot of learning as I go.
  21. Absolutely love your tanks. I have struggled a bit with stem plants but I think I'm getting somewhere with them now. Mostly I need to not be obsessive and sticking my hands in to rearrange things so often. 🙄 I am my own worst enemy in that regard. I hope they eventually grow in to look more like yours. That ludwigia is a stunner.
  22. I love it! Its going to be so amazing when it grows in a bit.
  23. That was in the 90's before the internet was really a thing... and there wasn't youtube and forums this this. I was the very image of the well meaning fishkeeper thinking she is doing her best and literally doing everything wrong. I may or may not have been gifted one of those bettas in a vase that were so popular back then as well.
  24. I love having a planted tank. I also love being able to take plants and trimmings to my lfs for credit. Its almost time for me to take another load in.
