  1. @Hobbit I had not considered that, but I'll give it a shot. This is purely an aesthetic project. I'm not trying to do aquaponics or anything. When I had the glass in there without anything in it, it did collect a small amount of water from the sponge filter bubbles popping.
  2. I'm going to recommend "Cannery Row" for best movie with frogs as currency. Back around Thanksgiving I was visiting my parents and being a total nerm. Recently I have been interested in older aquaria and microscopic observation. My father told me he had an old microscope that I could have. It was neat, but not what I was looking for. I explained to him that I wanted to observe the development of fish eggs, and I even brought some that we could look at with the microscope. Later on I was still nerming it up and talking about a sculpin that I collected and have been keeping. My parents weren't really interested, but allowed me to ramble on. After a while my father mentioned I was like Nick Nolte from "Cannery Row." I had no idea what he was talking about. Anyway, he explained the movie and when I got back home I promptly watched it. It was pretty good, I enjoyed it. I can kind of see what my father was getting at. At some point when I have the space I think I will have to bulid my own wood and metal framed aquarium.
  3. @Daniel what would you consider an aquarium inside an aquarium? Would they be allowed to share water, because if they did what would make it a separate aquarium? If the inside aquarium had seperate resources from outside of the outer aquarium, is it technically still inside of the aquarium? Anyway, Tanner from Serpa Design has already made a pretty cool terrarium inside of an aquarium.
  4. I saw some floating candle holders the other day and thought there must be something I can do with these. I started off by using it as a view window to cut through the distortion coming from the bubbles of the sponge filter, but that got boring. I could have used them as intended, but I like to find different uses for things. So I decided since they look like small terrarium bowls that I'd try for a floating small "terrarium." Currently I have just put some coco coir and chia seeds in it. We'll see how it turns out. Since I have several extra of these I might try some other plants in the future, but I could use some suggestions. Day 1
  5. Credit to @MAC for part of this template. Also not liking Star Wars is a big part of being a Star Wars nerd and I thought Jar Jar was pretty cool when I was 11.
  6. This is my only native, a banded sculpin. It is my culling solution. Yeah, it's not the most colorful or friendly fish, but it is the most interesting fish I have kept. It flashes colors and patterns in response to food or when frightened. The eyes are like nothing I've seen before, they'll be solid black until it catches a glimpse of movement and then they glow yellow. Also kind of looks like a frog.
  7. I think it has to do with regulations specific to keeping native natural resources. Like you could inbreed a species and it could potentially get back into the wild population and have adverse effects. I know I have looked it up before. Also you have a daily limit on possession of certain species and that would apply even if you were just keeping them in a tank. I think that you would be required to keep a fishing license as long as you keep the fish and in some cases a permit for fish farming if you intend to breed or sell them. I could be mistaken since it's been awhile since I researched this and it could just be my state.
  8. Golden White Cloud Mountain Minnows
  9. Anubias nana petite in the center, Bucephalandra on the left, and Java Fern in the back.
  10. Thanks, l wasn't sure how to scape or plant in a BiOrb since it's basically an undergravel/box filter, and you have to access the center uplift tube for filter maintenance. So I hid that with half a coconut with plants glued onto it. Then I thought it looked weird without a background, so I used that Java Fern as kind of a curtain for a the background. I also find it to be a finicky plant. I have only purchased it 3 times and it always dies back slowly, but the new leaves are usually good after that. It grows slowly for me and looks awful for quite a while. I think it's just an acclimation process, because I have never fully killed one but I wouldn't say I have had the best of luck with them. It had been setup up for a couple months in that picture and you can see some browning on the leaves. It's about half as thick now, 6 months later. I don't think the light is strong enough to support the lush growth that it had.
  11. Not Anubias only, but rhizome only.
  12. @JdogtrainerWhat does it look like when it comes out of the shell? It might not be aquatic. The eye stalks should be a good indicator. I received a terrestrial snail in a plant order once. It looked very much like a bladder snail, but turned out is was an amber snail. It lived on top of the floating plants and some driftwood in my tank for several months before disappearing. It laid eggs so now I have several small ones that hang out on my tank.
  13. Today I found a flower on some hydrocotlyle. Just thought I'd share.
  14. I honestly can't remember the first video, but I know I had just recently brought home a betta and that is probably how it showed up on my homepage. It was back in 2017. What I do remember is seeing cherry shrimp in a LupDiesel video and needing them in my life. This was around the time when all the fishtubers were either traveling around touring fishrooms together or visiting each other's. Mike from Aquapros still wore a lab coat in most of his videos. Jimmy was sashimi whiskey and had several tanks in an upstairs bedroom and didn't work for Cory. I think Cory had just got the 800 and Mbu studios wasn't a thing. I remember my first order from the Co-Op, a shirt and easy green combo and they came packaged in fish bags with a rubber band. It seems like it all should be more than almost 4 years ago. Everyone has come a long way.
  15. I'm fairly certain that no pictures exist of my childhood tank because my parents were not much for taking pictures. This is the Firemouth that I had in college, and the third fish I ever kept as an adult. The first being a betta and the second a common pleco. You can also see the common pleco looming in the back of a couple photos. These are the only pictures I ever took of that tank and these fish even though I had them for 3 years. I had just bought my first DSLR that took me almost a year to save up for. circa 2008.
  16. If you have a power head, small plastic bottle, and some filter floss you could filter out the finer particles pretty quick. Even a hang on back with some floss will do well to capture the fine particles.
  17. @Daniel I have lost many hours since discovering The Biodiversity Heritage Library.
  18. I too recently became aware of Vorticella in my aquarium, but have not witnessed a colony the size of the one you discovered. I guess people have been keeping aquariums for their microscopic inhabitants for quite some time. This book from 1883 has a whole chapter on the microscopical aquarium. http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org//apple-touch-icon.png The fresh-water aquarium - Biodiversity Heritage Library WWW.BIODIVERSITYLIBRARY.ORG The Biodiversity Heritage Library works collaboratively to make biodiversity literature openly...
  19. Too red? I mean if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and looks like a duck. Too big? I don't know a whole lot about plants, but looked for what you are describing. I'm sure there are many more plants than the ones listed in one book I own.
  20. I do not recommend throwing the shrimps. I doubt they would appreciate it. All joking aside it sounds like you're well on your way to being successful with shrimp. You've given yourself plenty of time and you have a solid plan with plenty of worthy advice. You are much more patient than I was when I wanted shrimp. How many are planning on starting your colony with? Are going with the standard red or another color?
