  1. Week 2 I'm going to give some background on the setup this week. It is a ceramic bowl. I'm guess it holds around 5 gallons. It's lit by a desk lamp and filtered with a sponge filter powered by a nano usb air pump. I used a bag of aquasoil from Petco and some crushed coral, both that I had laying around for about a year and needed to do something with. I set this up because I noticed I had about 20 rice fish fry in a cup of plant clippings. I have never had that kind of success in a spawn and wanted a space to grow them out. So naturally after several weeks with a new setup I decided I had more room for new fish and got 6 orange medaka. I really want to try breeding them with other color variants to get a tri-color. Anyway, I made an order from the Co-Op for this setup. I mostly wanted a new sponge filter and some plants. I put in a nano coarse sponge filter and 6 banana plants. I recieved them today. And now for the update on the "terrariums." The chia sprouts are booming. Their roots are starting to overtake the bottom of their pot. The other "terrarium" with hydrocotyle tripartita and pearl weed is doing much better. I believe the plants have acclimated to be emersed now. The hydrocotyle has grown many new leaves. Thanks for checking out the update.
  2. Yes! I worked retail for 10+ years, and the general public expects the person with a name tag and uniform to know everything about everything. If I had time I would just look things up on my phone or call another store, but then tell them that they should factor in time and gas prices to go somewhere else. I mean, I guess there is no harm in asking and you can't know until you ask, but c'mon people if I could look something up or find out with a phone call then you could have also.
  3. @Jess the Audubon field guides sort of match that description.
  4. @quirkylemon103 I'm not an expert on them, but I have not observed much, if any, increase in activity from mine when I feed. Mine spend most of their time hiding out huddled up in the roots of a crypt.
  5. @quirkylemon103 I hardly ever see mine and I have like 15-20 in a 12 long. I have noticed that they come out around the dawn and dusk cycle more often than any other time and that's usually when I feed the tank. I can't really recommend another food because mine didn't spawn until I started using the fry food, but that could be a coincidence. I was feeding sera onip tabs previously and would see them forage through what made it to the bottom.
  6. @TimeTraveler it's great! Everyone likes it from my plecos and shrimp to my pygmy corys and rice fish. My plecos will ignore their wafers and rasp on the fry food that gets caught in the hair algae. You can see in the picture it's almost empty, but I made sure to order more when it got about halfway down.
  7. So the link is the issue? Could a screenshot be used instead? As long as it is purely for informational purposes and does not redirect anyone from this site? In @braids' case where it's only information about a product or fish could this be an acceptable work around?
  8. @TimeTraveler I think I started with 10. I have fed all sorts of foods, but currently I am feeding : My cherries are in a community tank, so I'm sure they eat everything I feed that tank. If it wasn't so expensive I would keep feeding my shrimp only tank the Shrimp King Yummy Gummy, I would believe it if they said it had shrimp crack in it. I don't use crushed coral, ada, or wondershell.
  9. @TimeTraveler yes, my profile pic is a shrimp I raised and I like them very much. You should get some if you are interested in them, they are nice to watch. Also, they do well with Bristlenose which I have also bred. It's a nice combo.
  10. So it's a couple days later and now I am observing what appears to be a swim bladder issue in another of the rice fish. It looks like the anus might be swollen and maybe has fungus or mucus around it. It is also swimming off balance. Is this a digestive issue? Since the water is 65 degrees. Is it parasites? Since this is the second fish to have the same affected area. I am going to move it in the specimen container to a heated aquarium to observe. What other treatments should I look into?
  11. @FishyJames I'm pretty sure he has said he got the Rolex in chat before a stream. I think the Rolex appeared in KG tropicals stream. I could be wrong, but I think that's the Rolex. And yes, he deserves it.
  12. I have grown Java moss, Bucephalandra, and Pearl weed attached to wood before.
  13. Week 1 I don't know if I can call the chia sprouts a terrarium at this point. They are well out of the glass container. It's more of a floating pot now. As for the other container, the hydrocotyle is struggling to convert or at least is not growing much and has lost most of it's leaves. I added some pearl weed which is now converting and drying out some. I might have to find a lid to help with humidity in the container.
  14. It's snowing! I really considered just enjoying it from the window, but I decided to get outdoors.
  15. I found a dying rice fish tonight with what appears to be some sort of intestinal complication and a red spot. I've had this fish along with 6 others in a 5 gallon tub for two weeks now. Since I can really only view them from above it's hard for me to say if this was showing any signs earlier. Nitrate 30 Nitrite 0 Gh 300 Kh 40 Ph 6.8 Temp ~65 room temp
  16. @Jdogtrainerhmm the flatness of the shell in the first pictures reminded of snails I have seen on land, but after looking up Ramshorn snails I think it could be either Planorbis planorbis or Gyraulus albus. I'm not an expert, so could be anything but that seems like a good direction for further research.
  17. I had to take a cue from @Daniel and get a book on fishes for my state.
  18. You could probably buff/sand the rust off the tweezers, but that would just further the wear on the coating. I doubt a small amount of rust would hurt. Are you leaving the tweezers in the tank for extended periods of time? The only experience I have with rusted aquarium tools is my scissors are a bit rusty on the inside of the blades and I can't say that I have seen a correlation between using them and anything negative in my tanks. Although the scissors are only in the tank for maybe a minute every couple of days.
  19. I'm sure you could catch something from tank water although I imagine we would have heard more about such instances if they were frequent occurrences. I don't use gloves, but have got in to the habit of washing, or at least rinsing, my hands both before and after putting them in my tanks after seeing all the microscopic organisms living in some tank water. I have never used the mouth siphon method. I know Gianne from Inglorious Bettas has talked with @Cory about fish TB or something that people can catch from fish in an old live stream. Around the 45min mark.
  20. After seeing all of the illnesses and parasites that are brought up on the forum daily I've determined that I must just be a lucky fishkeeper. I would like to be able to help these people with their fish, but I have next to no experience in that area. I would only be able to recite what the internet says and not be able to speak from experience. I have only encountered dropsy 3 times with 3 different bettas and was only successful treating once. Other than that I have had a bacterial infection, I think, outbreak in a shrimp colony. I think 4 instances of illness over 4 years is pretty lucky. *knocks on wood* I say I'm lucky because I am not a religious water changer/tester. My maintenance routine is not really a routine. I would say perhaps I'm ignorant to a lot of potential issues and signs, but I just don't lose many fish or shrimp and they seem healthy. Is anyone else just as lucky?
  21. 13 hours later and there has been quite a bit of growth on the chia sprouts.
  22. I agree that on whatever trip I take must include a zoo or aquarium. The closest aquarium to me currently is the Wonders of Wildlife in Springfield, Mo. Luckily my parents live there and I have been to it about a half a dozen times. Even if I don't go to the aquarium, the Bass Pro shop that it is located at is the headquarter store and has several large tank displays with all sorts of native fish, birds, alligators and even a small stream runs through the camping section.
  23. Thanks. It was my third attempt and I still have some areas to refine. I enjoy the novelty of making something with a literal value of 25 cents or in this case 75 cents look like it should be worth more than that.
  24. I like to make jewelry from change. I once fell down the rabbit hole of coin rings on YouTube and for some reason I had to make them. It made working in retail a treasure hunt everyday. Some coins dating 1964 and before were made from silver. I don't sell the things I make, I usually give them as gifts. I just enjoy working with my hands and perfecting techniques. This is my little setup. Here is a ring made from a half dollar silver proof that I wore for 5 years. The detail on the outside wore away, but the date and "Liberty" is still visible on the inside. Just recently I discovered the trend of making bells from coins. I plan on giving this one away as a 2020 Christmas ornament.
  25. Day 4 We have some green starting to develop. The chia seeds are sprouting. I have also added an additional candle holder with some hydrocotyle tripartita, it was submerged and has dried out a bit. We'll see if it recovers and can transition to emersed growth.
