  1. Would you be dealing with Old Tank Syndrome if you don't do regular water changes even with plants ?
  2. @BrandyI was just watching Rachel O’Leary and she said the same. The Ellobiopsidae that they are dying from is not so treatable....sad really. It makes me think my LFS doesn’t quarantine them or have a close up check. I hope it’s ok to use this video as reference. Admin’s let me know if it’s not please. Thanks for sharing Brandy.
  3. Perhaps some Amano shrimp if your tank is well covered, they are great tank cleaners, especially the plants.
  4. Update: I have euthanized 3 with fast spreading ??? The remainder so far seem untouched.. touch wood.
  5. Your tanks are beautiful @Streetwise, is humidity a problem in your apartment with them uncovered?
  6. Jeepers... a double hit. Delivered to me via friend from LFS, so I did not view myself, not that I would have seen it in the fish stores tanks. Very easy to see in substrate free quarantine tank. Has anyone had success with treating this fungus and parasite? Here is an article that suggests Kordon Rid- ICH for the fungus. I have ICH-X, Paraguard, and Malachite Green in my arsenal. Salt baths for the Scutariella? I'm not holding my breath for cleaning them up, as I know shrimp are sensitive not only to some meds but large water changes. Probably will end up getting a store credit, but not replacing these imported shrimp from the same store. Lucky for me I quarantined them. https://aquariumbreeder.com/ellobiopsidae-or-cladogonium-ogishimae-green-fungus-in-shrimp-tank/
  7. My tanks are all low tech, Fluval LED's, Flourish Substrate mixed with inert gravel, with mostly easy plants, crypt's, hydro, bacopa, java fern, some mosses, Anubis's, water sprite, lilaeopsis, Pogostemon helferi, buce. Thrive liquid Fert and Root tabs. ****Added note: I always wanted a Zen tank and thought I'd found the perfect Buddha... not so. Purchased in Walmart pet section, a molded hard plastic ornament from China. It had a chemical smell that I though I could remove by soaking and washing well. While washing did improve the smell it didn't take it totally away. In less than a week I had a whole community tank with all fish doing the "shimmy". All I can say is do your homework, if it doesn't feel right to your instinct don't use it. I did several water changes and it took over a week for the fish to return to normal behaviour. **** A shame as it was the most beautiful planted tank I've done yet.
  8. Beautiful.. they don't look vicious do they!
  9. @Angelfishlover as soon as the plant is rooted, it's coming out of the filter and going into the tank, I don't want to mess with cleaning sponges and roots!
  10. This will work for AquaClear filters,I cut a section from a 1 litre drink bottle section and slit to divide, slide it above and below the outflow. The water will still come out the sides but the force is not as direct. You can shorten the section to adapt it to fit. I have Amano's in some tanks and worry about them getting up into them.. so I'm going to try putting a section of hard plastic between the filter medium and filter wall just high enough and narrow enough that the water will spill out around the sides again. Or I will try @Chrisdis suggestion. The outflow control on an AquaClear isn't always slow enough for some fish. *If you run a line of glue from a glue gun on top of the filter lid, and let it set before attaching, the homemade flow control it will stay exactly where it's put.
  11. These are like sports cards! Let's trade em! But coming from Canada, I can only be envious..
  12. Grateful to @Jungle Fanfor being more specific about the GBR's. Wish someone had shared this with me when I tried them in a mixed community,
  13. Sorry I seem to be having problems with hitting the wrong button. My first cycle I was anxious and did water changes galore! I learned soon after it was ok to check the water every 2 days or so and watch the fish for signs of distress. If they aren't swimming or eating, rapid breathing or gasping or have colour loss, these are signs to check your water parameters. If the ammonia ranges .5 or higher do a water change. If a 30% water change doesn't bring it down, you might go to 50%. Fish can tolerate .25 ammonia easily while in cycle but not higher. The next phase is seeing the Nitrites spike, that means you are getting close to half way in your cycle.. Nitrites are toxic to fish, so if the ammonia were at .25 but you had nitrites you want to do a water change to bring them to 0.. again you can start with 30%. Don't get hung up on how much to change unless you aren't seeing a decrease. Your goal is to see 0 (A)-0 (N)- 5ppm to 20ppm Nitrates. It will take 6-8 weeks to do it properly. Adding Nutrifin Cycle as per label will help, also if you have a cycled tank you can squeeze your established filter media or sponge filter into the water. You don't have to dip it into the tank for this, just squeeze from above. It'll be murky for a short time but your filter will clear it. Then return borrowed filter media to your established tank. Keep in mind that once cycled it is not unusual to get an ammonia reading of .25 in an established tank using the API master test kit. They call that a false positive. My tanks always ring in at .25 ammonia 0 Nitrite and 20 Nitrates.. if you have too many fish, or overfeed you will go higher without water changes. When you hit cycled parameters, add new fish only a few at a time, your tank has to grow more bacteria as you add fish to keep up with converting their feces, uneaten fish food etc to good Nitrates. Hope this helps.
  14. Your tank will need to be well established to make GBR's happy. They are more sensitive than Bolivian Rams. Either way you want to be truly cycled and add new fish slowly until the bio load is enough to support them.
  15. My grandmother bred tetra's in the 60's for a local fish shop, and kept about 20 tanks. My first job was to pick the snails out of her tanks! When she retired, I inherited and stored all her equipment and books. I've always kept fish, but not like I have for the last 5 yrs. @Daniel I remember TFH magazines as well. I was allowed to keep tanks at school , mostly fancy goldfish. This book of hers used to be my bible.
  16. You should have some nitrates.. 5- 20 ppm. Are you sure you are cycled?
  17. What are your parameter's? Have you tested recently?
  18. @DanielI'm in the market for a new algae scraper.. now you have me fearful Have you tried twisting instead of pulling to separate? Really sorry to hear about your fingers.. ouch, look at the bruise. I can picture a few more metal objects gravitating to it before you get it unstuck. Be careful now! This definitely fits "wish I hadn't done that"...
  19. A recurring one of earthquakes. The "big one" and my tanks...
