  1. Some plants produce something called anthocyanins, it helps convert excess light into heat energy, working like sun screen to help prevent the part of the plant in high light from burning up.
  2. Had these shelves in the corner of my room that were not suitable for fish tanks, so I removed them and built a sticks and stones. Should be able to fit 3 x 10 gallons on the lower shelf and on the top shelf a 40 gallon and a 29. friend is coming over tomorrow to help move a 40 to it.
  3. Tried a few ways to drain my tanks, but I always end up running a hose from drain to tank and getting the siphon going. It is fast, dosnt require drilling or excessive plumbing, and uses half as much water to do the same amount of water change as overflow systems. this is what id change, moving the hose from tank to tank, restarting the siphon each time, making sure the hose stays in the drain and in the tank, its not convenient. I think my next change would be build a PVC manifold using t joints with ball valves and barb connectors for each shelf of fish tanks. Run hoses from each tank to the manifold, start a siphon in each hose and then close the hose at the manifold. Couple this with the Hefty trash can on wheels with python hose and a pump inside, and I can hook up at the manifold out, open the valve for the tank i want to drain, and drain into the hefty trash can where the water gets pumped out the door/to the drain.
  4. Have some leeches myself, been thinking about getting a leech trap, not sure how well they work though: https://www.ebay.com/i/363027983702?chn=ps&var=632151534972&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-117182-37290-0&mkcid=2&itemid=632151534972_363027983702&targetid=934793861976&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=9059139&campaignid=10897343920&mkgroupid=108910250562&rlsatarget=aud-622524042958:pla-934793861976&abcId=9300403&merchantid=101673363&gclid=CjwKCAjw74b7BRA_EiwAF8yHFKJwmyFDKQ0RoAphO4AxXAuAQQsyitgOAWuEAhTqozSljEoXj0235RoCbTgQAvD_BwE
  5. I was re watching a live show the other day, i think it was Aquarium Co-op, but they said fish get hungry angry (Hangry) too, and that the longer between feedings the more likely a fish is to pick on another fish, which picks on another fish, ect resulting in a more stressful aggressive environment. As long as you are feeding enough that all your fish are getting some food each feeding and you are Ok with the water changes, IMO, it tends to be better to feed several small meals throughout the day than 1 or 2 times.
  6. I bought one of these back in May/June, tried it with Rice fish eggs in the same tank as the rice fish and then a month or so later i tried it with Kilifish eggs in the same tank as the kilifish, in both cases the eggs turned black with in a few days and never hatched. With more people getting these I am looking forward to the increase in available information concerning them, maybe I'll be able to figure out what I've been doing wrong.
  7. One of my local fish stores has this metal bracing on it along with a 2-3 inch euro brace on a 150+ gallon tank, looking at the pic I took I just realized I didn’t get the corners, I’ll try to get a picture of them next time I am at the store, but maybe this will give you some ideas.
  8. Got my Linear Piston Air Pump today, and got the initial plumbing set up for it while watching the Aquarium Co-op and Steenfott Aquatics live streams. Freed up 3 aqua top 100’s, a tetra whisper, And an Aquarium Co-op usb pump, added 2 more large sponge filters to my system, and increased the flow in all my tanks.
  9. if you google 2" Reticulated Foam, 30 PPI 48" X 108" you should be able to find a 2 pack for 490$ Enough to make 80 x 10 gallon matten filters if you are precise with your cuts, so only about 6$ a filter + the cost of the lift tube, but you'd end up with 70 more filters than you'd need. I'd just spend the 250$ ish for 10 that are precut with all the parts included.
  10. Got a 150, been trying some different things. The first 2 lights on the left are Phillips 20 watt "250 watt equivalent" floodlights. The next one is a HLG 100 V2. 4th one is a GE 32 watt par38 full spectrum grow light, and the 5th is an A360x The HLG is wayyy too warm, 3000k, might be worth it to try a 4000k board. Not sure the temp on the GE, on the warm side but not terrible. The Phillips are 5000k. I like the A360x the most, then GE 32 Watt Full Spectrum, Phillipps, and last the HLG 100 V2. A 4000k Quantum board might be next to the A360x, but I do not like the 3000k for a fish tank.
  11. Jack Dempsey, about month and a half old Japanese Neon Blue Endler with a Zebra Danio pachypanchax playfairii kilifish fry hiding in some guppy grass:
  12. Sony A7R3 with Sony Fe 50mm F2.8 Macro lens Juvenile White Cloud's and Jack Dempsey's Jpeg compression sucks, I cropped down the white cloud photo for a closer up with the same quality:
  13. I have not sold any plants ever, today I trimmed my Nymphoides hydrophylla 'Taiwan', got about 30 decently rooted propagations: Assuming I have some one that already wants to buy them at a fair price, are there are any extra steps I can take, for example, hydrogen peroxide/bleach dip, low light period for any possible algae, or with the way I package them that will leave the buyer with as pleasant an experience as possible?
  14. I do not think cotton balls will work, the filters are tightly compacted into a dowel like shape where the fibers all seems to go in a uniform direction. you can get a pack of 200 top filter tips for around 5$ at most cigar shops/online.
  15. If the Epoxy doesn't work, depending on how visible the join is going to be, I'd use dowels. line everything up, drill holes, apply superglue, insert dowels, and let dry.
  16. My bedroom/fish room/ hanging with friends room has been running out of space. A friend got me a free 150 gallon but it took up so much space something needed to be done. so I built a 6.5’ high bunk bed, started on it yesterday, finished it up today. Also got my new 150 on a stand and filled.
  17. I was thinking the same with A for a framed tank, but then I actually got the tank, it is an old Ambassador tank that sits more like a frameless. I am probably going to go with the center support, B.
  18. we usually get 1 -2 weeks straight where it doesn't get above mid 20's and is in the singles at night, every other winter or so. My friends have a 1/4 acre pond and most years it gets frozen solid enough to take a car out on it.
  19. I have a cistern set up to collect rain from just the 3rd floor gutters pH - 6.2 Nitrate - 0 ppm Nitrite - 0 ppm GH - 20 ppm Chlorine - 0 ppm KH - 0 ppm TDS - 20 ppm Ammonia - 0 ppm Pennsylvania borough Tap water on the other hand, pH - 7.8 Nitrate - 0 ppm Nitrite - 0 ppm GH - 150 ppm Chlorine - 0 ppm KH - 180 ppm TDS - 310 ppm Ammonia - 0 ppm
  20. So I might be getting a 150 gallon fish tank from a friend of a friend, and I am planning on a sticks and stones style rack, I figured i'd share the design. I am not sure how I want to set up the foundation, please vote in the Poll for A or for B depending on which you would use:
  21. Trying to go no filter/air, I don't want anything electric running out there and I like White clouds too much, if it gets cold and i lose a dozen white clouds I'm going to be more depressed than if it gets cold and I lose a dozen mosquito fish. next year though, going to do rice fish and white clouds, try to start by May and breed hundreds. I had gotten interested in the Dojo loach a little while back, and was thinking about getting some for an indoor tank, but never ended up doing it. They are Legal in PA and Aqua Huna has a 4 pack for 30$, Id say there is a strong a strong chance i will go with that if i figure out some things to help with over wintering. Put in about 30 mosquito fish earlier today:
  22. I had some issues with an indoor tank while I was away a little over a month ago, had 7 rice fish, was left with just one. I was out in the pool/pond the other day and noticed an orange glint, found a mature male rice fish out there. with it mature id say no way it was an egg that hatched, I think at some point prior to the die off, i scooped him up with some plants and didn't notice it and he has been out there for at least a month. I caught him, put him in quarantine, gave him some Prozi, fins are a little rough but hes eating good, normal poop, probably going to move him with the other rice fish soon. Really glad to find another of my rice fish is still alive and surprised he survived out there. Around the same time I noticed the rice fish I also found a mosquito fish, probably got caught in horn wort or guppy grass while moving excess out to the pool/pond. With the experience of trying to catch the rice fish, it makes me wary of winter and having to catch out any fish I put in the pool/pond, i live in Pennsylvania and winters can be cold. The other issue is Dragon Fly nymphs, with out a mesh there are tons of them and no real predators. I am thinking about putting some Mosquito Fish out there since i have lots, they breed like crazy and i know there is already one surviving out there. I am also thinking about ways to keep the water from freezing solid in the winter, maybe a green house type pool cover, if I can get something like that set up I was also thinking about trying to over winter some PA native blue gill, with the blue gills hopefully serving as a predator for the dragon fly nymphs.
