  1. I would fast the fish for a day or 2, maybe more, and then slowly work back up to the amount of food you are currently feeding daily.
  2. I use solar naturals rock salt, tried with Fritz but didn't notice an improvement so I went back to the rock salt. Though to note, my tap water is at 450ish TDS and around 7.5 ph, so it might just be I didn't need the extra minerals from the fritz salt.
  3. A healthy food that turns into a perfectly balanced fertilizer.
  4. Are you still feeding your fish? If so I would stop for around 4 days while you continue with the water changes. If you are still feeding them they are putting the ammonia right back, and if you stop feeding them, they are going to continue adding ammonia for a few days while they digest the food, so that is why I say about 4 days of fasting. of course if you see any aggression while fasting them, feed them to help with it. For water changing if I need to get toxic levels down, I do a 60-70% water change first thing in the morning and a second in the evening, usually spread 8 or so hours apart. Once ammonia gets to around .25, I stop with the water changes and monitor that the tank gets the rest of the way to 0 on its own.
  5. Moved my tubs yesterday, reorganized an area behind one of my fish racks and set up a 4 foot wire rack for the tubs. Moving the tubs was terrible, definitely a two person job. They are very wobbly and not the sturdiest. I didn't like it, the lighting wasn’t that good and it was inconvenient trying to work in the tubs. I had about 5 inches space above the tubs to work with, I increased it to 8-10 ish. I also moved the tubs to alternating ends of the rack and set up the lamps to shine through the wire rack for each tub to give more light spread. With this set up I hope to set up 2 more of these tubs: Gayi tub is doing well: The jungle Val has started to send out a few runners but nothing incredible. 3 of the nurii crypts have started to grow new leaves, one melted though. The scarlet temple is doing pretty good and the Gayi is flourishing: the Val tub is also doing well: Blue hygro is looking good, some pearl weed trimmings I planted when I first set up the tub are really filling in, and the Val is doing incredible: im getting some algae in the tubs, last week I water changed but didn’t dose ferts but got more algae. Water changed yesterday, doses the gayi tank with ez green and flourish Advanced , but just dosed flourish advanced in the Val tank. Going to see what happens in a week. With this I also cut back the lights to 9 hours for both tubs and with moving the tubs the lights are a little further away in their new spot. I am hoping that will also help with the algae.
  6. I would recommend something more along the lines of a gladiator or edsal heavy duty 77 inch long rack, with some sheets of plywood cut to fit on the shelves. For the gladiator (Home Depot)/edsal (Lowes), I believe the supports take up a total of 5 inches of the listed 77, so there is around 6 feet of usable shelf, which should be more than enough for the 75, with shelf space on the sides, and the 6 x10 gallons would be around 63 inches, so the shelf would also be able to fit that request. Though I don't know how easy it would be to make it look nice, so it falls a little short there.
  7. Picked up 3 bottles of Ich-X, didn't realize one of them was a pond solution Ich-X stocked in the wrong place at the LFS. Went through the first 2 bottles, dosed with the third bottle at normal dose. Fish started freaking out an hour later so I did a 50% water change. About 2 hours after that several fish had died so I did another 50% water change and things started to calm down. It wasn't until the next day that I realized that it was the Pond Solutions Ich-x and I had essentially given my fish double the safe dosage.
  8. If you Cut back on feeding your fish leading up to the move and fast them for a few days after moving them, you can better control toxins building up in the new tank, if you do need to move the fish same day and there isn’t enough bacteria that survives the move. Personally, I like to add some plants from the establish tank, a handful of gravel, and some hard scape, fertilize, and let the new tank go for a week. Move the fish/filter/hard scape, as much water as possible from the old tank, and heavily reduce food for 3-4 days while monitoring the fish and testing if there are issues. IMO That first worry free fishless week creates a stronger foundation making the move and the days following it less stressful on the fish.
  9. I have Val that only grows to 5-6 inches, instead of the 6 feet it can grow, due to shallow tank, high light, limited tank space, and probably some plant warfare, but for the tank it and the potomongeton gayi are still background plants: In how the aquarium size plays a role In how tall the plants grow, along with light strength, and available nutrients, using background, carpeting, ect seem like a more accurate description of how plants can grow respective to your aquarium, rather than listing the max growth range.
  10. I think on a recent live stream there was mention of poking a hole in the root tab. A week ago I added some root tabs to a tank, using the corner of a razor blade I carefully poked a slit in the top and bottom of the tabs, no issues with them at all. I think its air stuck inside them and the holes help it get out. A razor blade is what I had, but a thumb tack, safety pin, just about anything sharp should work.
  11. kinda lost control of the algae in the early days of this dirted tank, I’ve since removed the algae, but I like how it kind of aquascaped the tank, almost adding an extra layer of hard scape:
  12. The Gayi Tub: this tub has been about 1 degree colder than the Val tub, I had some spare 1 1/2 inch insulation, so a couple days ago I put the tub on it and have monitored it since then. it only raised the temp so it is about half a degree colder than the other tub, Not too large of a jump, a little disappointing: pearl weed, jungle Val, and scarlet temple are showing good growth: About a week ago I put in a bad looking Christmas’s moss bridge that I had thought died in one of my Jack Dempsey tanks, presently surprised to see life: The Val Tub: started some other tanks been picking a few Val and blue hygro out of this tub, also took an Ez planter with the crypt from the gayi tub for a new tank, it’s very convenient: seeing nice growth in the blue hygro rooted sections I planted last week: New leaves are starting to show on the purple silver tiger crypt: The runner on the dwarf sag was started when I planted it, but it’s finally turned into a plant: And the Val is doing amazing, the runner that had rooted from last week has another plant with its own runner now:
  13. Set up a 40 gallon breeder today, going to move a jack Dempsey to it once I get it cycled:
  14. Here is the Val tub: had some more blue hygro growing emersed, took some trimmings from it before putting it in my 150 to try and convert it: The blue hygro planted from before is looking good: the silver tiger queen crypts haven’t grown much, but I’ve found them slow growers that enjoy low light, I think they are still adjusting: the Val has taken off incredibly, the runner below was there when I planted the main plant but it has since rooted itself and started to send out its own runner: I be also planted a few more Taiwanese Lily’s, some moneywort I found floating in a tank and a sprig of HC Japan I also found floating in a tank: Notes: With out heaters and the tubs on the floor they stay around 63 degrees. both tubs got a squirt of EZ green and a cap full of flourish advance today.
  15. Here is the current Gayi tub: My pearl weed from the previous post came in looking very bad, something around 10 days in the mail in winter was not good for them at all. though one of them looks like it actually has some root still alive and part of the plant is coming back: The other one was not so fortunate and has completely melted so I trimmed a Rosen maiden crypt propagation from another tank and put that in the rock wool with some roots sticking out the bottom and put it in the EZ planter: The well rooted scarlet temple I planted earlier is looking great, while some of the rosen maiden is melting and others are starting to adjust/grow: planted a few pogo octopus: and hooked up a breeder box in the tank, trying to hatch rice fish eggs from algae where I found some eggs (been adding snails to the tubs):
  16. A medium Aquarium Co-on intake sponge fits tightly on 3/4 inch pvc and slows the water down great from my 600gph pump, if the sponge is mostly submerged, nothing gets stirred up.
  17. looking a little cloudy this morning, guessing plants brought in good bacteria and I’m getting a Slight bloom: Got some large Aquarium Co-op sponge filters in the afternoon, quite a bit too large for the trays, so I am using them a little differently I have the top tube going down into the sponge with a 2-3 inch length of air hose in the tube. The goal being to give the air more distance to travel with the long air hose inside, while the tube keeps the air flowing out through the top instead of the sponge, (this greatly limits the effectiveness of the filter): trying to get them as far into the substrate as I could stirred up some dirt: so I drained the tubs as far as I could, dug out the substrate where I wanted the filters and got them flat on the bottom. I put the substrate back in around them, filled The tubs and did another near 100% water change: I added more Val to the Val tub, along with some pearl weed, and 2 purple silver tiger queen crypt runners: In the Gayi tub I added more Gayi , jungle Val, and 4 Nurii Rosen maiden crypt’s. Along with the sponge filters I also got some ez planters and pearly weed for them today, so I Figured I’d try the Co-op way and added some root tabs to the pots and put them in the gayi tub: Both tubs got a cap full of flourish advance and A squirt of Ez green on day one, I added it again after the water change.
  18. I have Pachypanchax playfairii, not sure if that is the same as the Golden Panchax, but I think it is. I have tried spawning mops with both my rice fish and killifish, but never successful From my experience they like to spawn in algae the most, then moss, guppy grass and the like, then on the sponge filters, then spawning mops the least. I move the algae that they spawn in from the main tank to an unheated 10 gallon with a sponge filter and no light. I heat my rooms such that the tank stays above 70F, lower than that and I have found a large % of fry get ich. I don't imagine there would be an issue with the temp difference for the eggs to hatch in, but I wouldn't recommend going below 70F for the fry. I don't have a light directly on the 10 gallon tank so the algae starts to die and provides a good first food for the fry when they hatch. I feed their main tank a mix of tetracolor xl granules, color enhancing bug bite granules, and ez fry food ( around 4 parts tetra, 2 parts fry food, and 1 part bug bites) while occasionally replacing a meal with either baby brine or blood worms.
  19. Specifically as it concerns verifying that the cycle has occurred, correct, you do not have to test, as nothing would show since everything is being eaten by the plants. But you still want to make sure that nothing is showing before adding fish even if you see plant growth.
