  1. I recently started my first blackwater/tannin aquarium. I really enjoy seeing the mulm and bioflims create the natural biotope astentic I was looking for.
  2. For emptying my batches I hang it on the side of my utility sink. I place the strainer in the bottom of the sink and open the valve letting most of the container drain through the strainer. I pull the strainer out of the stream before the shells all drain out, doesn't take too long. I don't think the stand is meant to be used while collecting the BBS, I think its there because otherwise it wouldn't stand on its own.
  3. Just measured, I'd say 15 inches with the thermometer installed
  4. I would check water parameters for anything that could be stressing the fish. Guppies also prefer harder water so check that if you can. If anythings seems out of whack do water change/gravel cleaning before dosing erythromycin.
  5. Green Leaf Aquariums makes a paintball bottle size regulator system. https://greenleafaquariums.com/products/gla-gro-paintball-aquarium-co2-regulator.html I use their full size regulators and am very happy with them. Very high quality and worth the investment.
  6. I'm running a Digital Aquatics Reefkeeper Lite on my planted tank. I use it to control the heaters, lights and to monitor ph. I could use it to control my CO2 but I would need to get another controllable outlet. I think controllers are pretty handy to use even for freshwater tanks. It's too bad someone doesn't make a cheaper option. Digital Aquatics isn't in business anymore so once this stops working I'll probably switch to wifi outlets. Hopefully BRS and Apex release their cheaper collaboration package again, I regret not picking one up now.
  7. I've been using the Ziss hatchery for a few months now. Overall I'm very happy with it, I don't hate the stand. I'm considering spray painting the outside with black krylon fusion. I have trouble getting the BBS to settle with the ambient light in my basement.
  8. I haven't tried 50/50 water-vinegar so I can't compare. I think the alcohol helps it dry fast and streak free, the soap helps to further clean any stubborn smudges I think.
  9. I have to make a new bottle of this so I thought I'd share. You'll need: Clean Spray Bottle, I use a standard 24oz Isopropyl Alcohol, for streak free quick drying White Vinegar, to cut hard water marks Dish Soap, cuts oils, finger prints etc. A measuring device with oz increments, I use a shot glass because it's 1oz roughly. Also a funnel helps. The mix is: 2oz Isopropyl Alcohol 4oz White Vinegar 2 Drops of Dish Soap Fill the rest of the bottle with water, I use RODI because I have it but whatever you got is fine. I believe this to very aquarium safe. I've even drop a paper towel wet with this cleaner into the tank and had no side effects on fish or water quality.
  10. My nets I just rinse in HOT water but I also have separate nets for display tanks, QT tanks, and grow out tanks. Hard tools I don't worry about as much, just rinse and dry.
  11. What size is the tank with high nitrates and what kind of fish are in it and how many?
  12. What are you controlling/monitoring with your Neptune?
  13. When designing mine I held a net above my tanks and measured the distance I'd need to use it easily. I used these racks https://www.lowes.com/pd/edsal-24-in-D-x-77-in-W-x-72-in-H-4-Tier-Steel-Freestanding-Shelving-Unit/1001326526 with 3/4 plywood (not OSB) as the shelves.
  14. Are you guys considering their LED shop lights? They seem pretty awesome, I've always been curious to see how bright they are.
  15. I think you're on the right track. I usually add some food every couples days for the beneficial bacteria to breakdown. Just test your water and don't rush adding too many fish 👍
  16. Thanks Lizzie! Good luck with your move, hope everything goes smooth!
  17. Mick here, I've been keeping fish as long as I can remember. I'll be turning 30 this year so I reckon that's about 20 years in the hobby. I started with an Opaline Gourami and a Kuhli Loach and I've been hooked ever since. I've kept most tropical fish available from my local stores at one time or another, including a fish only saltwater tank. I started dabbling in planted tanks about 10 years ago (geez) and I don't think I'd ever have a tank without them. Currently I'm keeping a 110 gallon planted tank with a variety of Tetras. Also a 75 gallon blackwater tank to be stocked with the larger bodied Tetras. Thanks to the inspiration of Dean and Randy I've also started a fish-corner-of-basement to try my hand at breeding and collecting. I've always been hesitant to share my tanks, not out of a feeling of inadequacy but rather not wanting to deal with the internet as we know it. I trust this be a great place to share my knowledge and experience, looking forward to it Thanks for the great work Cory.
