I did a little more work on the bow, but the sides need more. For now, I like the back wall as an algae farm for the shrimp.

I am going to setup up a tank or more at my folks' house in the Vermont woods, since we have to move the White Clouds and Neo Shrimp inside. I got a 15 gallon for them, but they want something bigger, and they want to use this as a stand. I'm thinking a 29 gallon would be perfect. My dad took these photos. I just realized that I frame and crop much like the old man.

I went to visit my folks today to setup a new network appliance/AP, and check on the tubs. I'm going to setup a 29 gallon or 40 breeder in their living room to move the White Clouds and Neo shrimp inside. I filmed a quick clip of my mom feeding the tubs. I was wondering why she was asking for more Xtreme Nano!

I think so. Your total time math might be different, since I count my ramp-ups and ramp-downs as 50% each. Try it, and adjust based on algae levels. Cheers

Fluval Plant 3.0 Scheduling and Programming
Streetwise replied to Streetwise's topic in Community Resources
Siestas are great. From what I understand, plants ramp up photosynthesis faster than algae. All ten of my tanks run with dual siestas. I describe the formula for my schedules in this thread. Diana Walstad also addresses the topic in her book.- 360 replies

We have discussed siestas in this thread:

I am starting to prepare for winter. Initially, I planned to bring the tubs down into my folks’ basement, but I don’t think my 80-year old mom was happy about choosing a place for them, so I suggested getting a 15 gallon tank for the entryway. I hadn’t heard back, but I went and picked up a black silicone 15 and a matching stand, and brought them over. To my surprise, they suggested using a bigger table in the living room with a larger tank, because they wanted to watch the White Clouds, snails, and Neo shrimp that they have been taking care of all summer! I’m going to keep the 15 in case I move, but tomorrow I’ll go pickup a 29 gallon or maybe larger. Hopefully it will fit all the Mopani wood, and maybe even the moss island! Cheers

Thanks Daniel. I have the flow at about 30% to get the skimmers working well, but I have to top off more frequently to maintain the optimum water level. I would like to hear opinions about whether it would look better to keep those filters in their current orientation, or go sideways with the mounting magnets on the left and right sides of the tank. Cheers Edit: I moved the filters so I could see each way. Three photos each.

Lovely tanks! The mix of wood and plants is so nice with your fish swimming around. Cheers!

I wish they wouldn't use moss in the name. From Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marimo Marimo[a] (also known as Cladophora ball, moss ball, moss ball pets, or lake ball) is a rare growth form of Aegagropila linnaei (a species of filamentous green algae) in which the algae grow into large green balls with a velvety appearance. Marimo are eukaryotic.

The primary internal power filter in my kit is the Top Fin MF10. I have cut my own outflow tubes and swapped-in AquaClear foam. They are very useful for sending flow to specific places, while still just doing basic foam filtering. Cat for scale.

School swimming continuously around island?
Streetwise replied to Bill Smith's topic in General Discussion
I really enjoy tetras. Ember Tetras have been great tank mates with Neocaridina in my 7.5. They are a bit timid. I recently got a dozen Bloodfin Tetras, and they are very active and swim together all the time. -

I just took a couple of interesting filters out of storage to put in my 20 gallon: Tunze Comline Filter 3161 units. Each has an output pump on the bottom, with directional and output flow control. Water enters through the back bottom of the unit, travels up over an internal overflow, and into a chamber where one or two skimmer pieces can be used. Then the water travels down through a piece of foam, with optional filter floss above it. This makes it shrimp and fry safe in terms of access to the impeller. The rear input chamber can fit probes or small heaters. The filter is mounted via magnets. To clean it, you simply pull the foam out from the top, without removing the filter. For best operation, you have to maintain a consistent water level, and tune the pump output. I have replaced the internal foam with AquaClear 20 foam, which is larger and more coarse. I have not seen other freshwater hobbyists using this. It may be marketed more towards the marine hobby. https://www.amazon.com/Tunze-Comline-Nanofilter-3161/dp/B08467QF29/ Here is a photo of the boxes, filter floss, extra skimmer units, and lids.

There are all sorts of styles of filters. I think it would be valuable to have threads that focus on each type. Let's share some of the internal power filters that we have used in the hobby. I like them for my small tanks when I want small units that also provide directional flow.

I decided to remove the integrated Askoll hood filter from my 20 gallon tank. I considered getting another Eheim Classic, but I have so many spare filters. I decided to put in pair of interesting filters that I tried a while back: Tunze Comline Filter 3161. They are internal pump-powered filters that pull from the bottom, and also skim from the top. I've swapped the default foam for AquaClear foam that is a bit more coarse. While I really liked the hood filter that came with the Askoll system, it limited my ability to light the back of the tank. This tank doesn't really need two lights, but I added a spare 15"-24" Fluval 3.0 so I could get really good coverage in front of and behind the central Mopani wood. I had to wake up the tank to do this and take the photos, so most of the Bloodfin Tetras and Otocinclus are hiding. Cheers!
