  1. Went to the local park today to enjoy the warm weather. The spring is in the air and in the water :)
  2. White clouds are nice beginner fish for cold water tanks. Not so much for tropical temperatures.
  3. I'm not sure I find the baby eyes staring at me through the mama's belly very attractive...they seem huge! Definitely an interesting (and very pregnant) look though, I guess she is going to drop tonight or tomorrow.
  4. "They are looking at you!" Soon-to-be baby platies starting their modeling career early.
  5. If hair algae in my tanks looked like yours, I would have tried to grow it on purpose. The variety I got, however, was an entangled mess of free-floating foot-long strands, not good looking at all. Therefore, not allowed to thrive in my aquariums. That being said, I actually prefer hair algae to any other kind of algae, because it's the easiest to remove. Pulling it out with tweezers feels satisfying and relaxing for some strange reason.
  6. What is the size of this filter and how is it mounted? And what is your primary goal for the prefilter? I used black nylon socks (new, washed with warm water only) on my small internal filters (they were mounted on suction cups).
  7. I would suspect the air flow. My hatchery runs at above 80 all the time, never had a problem with that. Changes in aeration, however, did cause some problems. I'd guess that the excessive flow damages the shrimp and maybe the eggs too by crashing them repeatedly into the walls. (Disclaimer: my BBS are not from Aquarium Coop).
  8. This lovely lady laid some eggs in the QT, so she is officially a "she" from now on. :)
  9. Maybe split one batch of fry from a single pair of parents into two halves? One half heavily fed with BBS and another half (not-so-heavily fed with BBS) for control? With all other variables kept as identical as possible, this kind of experiment might produce a meaningful conclusion.
  10. I would also guess that. I've also seen that some fishes used to be in glass tanks don't enjoy living in plastic containers. Especially when something happens above the plastic container, the fishes seem a lot more scared compared to glass tanks.
  11. They look like normal platies to me. If you have a male in the tank or they have been exposed to males before, they are almost guaranteed pregnant. Pregnant females can be huge.
  12. Red albino guppy fry, 18 days old, showing a bit of color already.
  13. Babies happen. Even if their chances of survival are slim to none. I found five baby platies inside an internal filter and one unknown species baby (guppy, I guess) swimming in the community tank today. Oh well, nature doesn't care whether I have room for more fish or not... it's time to raise more fry! :)
  14. If you have hard boiled eggs around, you can feed them some egg yolk. I usually take a tiny amount (smaller than a half of a matchstick head), rub it between my fingers and rinse off in the tank.
  15. My dry foods go into small containers that sit next to the tanks. I don't refrigerate/freeze dry foods because the fridge is occupied by frozen foods and BBS eggs (a fact my spouse often reminds me about :).
  16. In my case, it's hard to tell. The septicemia outbreak I mentioned happened long after my goldfish got the bump. This part I know for sure. However, the previous owner told me that the goldfish was kept in a ~ 3g office desk tank for ~10 years and it got sick and almost died about 6 months before it came to me. I have no further info on diagnosis or treatment back then... could have been any disease or environmental factor. Thank you for sharing the Lymphocytis Virus name. Looks like a plausible diagnosis for my fish. The internet says it's of minor concern, and there is no treatment for it anyways.
  17. Unusually warm weather today, +15°C (59°F). The golden koi in the YuanMingYuan park are thriving under the melting ice.
