  1. I would use water hyacinths, there may be some in a local pond, or maybe someone is giving it away. All you need is one and it will suck up lots of nitrates! The plant will multiply as well.
  2. I would say to help prevent this later on, I would get the fish a bigger tank. I had a 30 gallon tank with 8 goldfish when I was a newbie, and saw lots of health signs. I would recommend a 40 gallon so they could stay there their whole life, fancy goldfish can get around 8in. All the best for you and your fish.
  3. I would say a scan I could use my phone for to identify diseases.
  4. Ok, I could try to breed white clouds out there! That would be so cool. Thanks!
  5. I love that idea, I did something like that to make a breeder basket.
  6. Oh, wow. I don't know. Probably some sort of algae. I did notice that the tips of your java fern are darker. Mine are that way. Dose anyone know if that is a deficiency?
  7. I would love to try a shrimp pond! Do you think I could raise a few babies even if I had some fish in there... if I had lots of cover? I would do probably fancy goldfish. I would use a bathtub as the pond.
  8. I have not kept them, but I have researched a lot about them.To keep a pair I would say at least a 29 high. I think the best advice is as Cory says, don't try to recreate there natural habitat, just what they were born in. I would try to find a local breeder so you can find out what water parameters they keep them in. Just keep it stable and you should be fine. Yet again I have not kept them.
  9. My goldfish are in a 700 gallon pond. I only have 5 feeder goldfish that are now 6 inches, because they will kill anything that comes into the pond. They even killed the 7th runt goldfish (that was with them for years) the minute it became weak. I tried to add a massive old comet but they beat it up, and it sadly passed away. I am sort of mad at them because I think it would be cool to have more fish.
  10. My cat will sit on the top of my tank, I think she likes the warm evaporation.
  11. I have never got it to work. It will only grow extremely slowly!!!!! I have a dirted tank with a gravel cap. It dose better in the dirt opposed to just gravel. I have diy CO2, and dose seachem flourish and excel. I guess it just dose not like my tank.
  12. I would say 40 breeders, because they offer so much depth for aquascaping.
  13. Thank you, yeah so I have 2 water lilies, water hyacinths, and lots of more plants, 2 dojo loaches, and pest snails but I don't know if they are still there because of the loaches. I would say that the ecosystem is pretty good. I mean it handles a bunch of decaying leaves with a small diy solar filter. I am just worried that there could be something in the wood that is maybe dormant or something that will grow and hurt the fish.
  14. I don't gravel vac, mainly because I have a dirted tank that is anarobic, and I am trying to grow hair grass. I have never has problems.
  15. Hey all, I am so happy, I just joined. I have a 700 gallon goldfish pond and was wanting to add driftwood. I have some manzanita plants near my house. I have collected a few 6ft long dead pieces. I was just worried about disease coming into the pond. I would have boiled it but I don't have that big a pot. 😄 The wood has been dead and dry for at least a year and so I am not sure I need to treat it. I was just wondering if you think it is dangerous, and if so, any ideas on how to treat it. Thank You! P.S. (Cory, I am a big fan. I listen to your podcasts when I do dishes and weed wack.) -A fish nerd
