  1. Welcome to the club! Tons of knowledgeable, polite people here. I've learned quite a bit over the past few weeks.
  2. Hi there and welcome to the forum! I just got my first shrimp today and I'm really diggin' 'em. They add a whole 'nother layer to the tank.
  3. I just got my first order of cherry shrimp from Aqua Huna today. Never had them before, but even just a few hours later, I think most of my tanks will have them from now on.
  4. Welcome! I am going with a black background for my 55, but I keep seeing these dark blue backgrounds like yours and makes me hesitate. Well I'm using plasti dip this first time around, so I can change it pretty easily if I decide I don't like it.
  5. I'll definitely post about my experience. This is my first time getting shrimp from anywhere too, so pretty excited.
  6. I'm in NY and ordered from @Guppy Guru's store. Pretty sure he is in Nevada. I also just ordered some cherry shrimp from AquaHuna, but they just shipped today, so no experience there yet.
  7. Does it look like this? i was just coming here to ask about this... She has been my most active since I started the tank, but i noticed she wasn't looking so hot last night. This morning she had this.
  8. Okay this is 100% a work in progress here, and I'm a cheapskate so please don't judge to harshly. The power cords will be cleaned up and hidden and the white thing on the top right is just a placeholder so I could get a sense of how high it will be. I still need two more cinder blocks, which I'll grab this afternoon. i have some toolbox liner stuff coming that matches that almost day-glo look of the towels on the bottom. I'm going to cover the top 2x4s with it and just tack it on. You'll notice there is no support in the middle of the top section. I went with 8" blocks instead of the 6" ones, so I didn't have room for the 55, the support, and the 20 gallon, but the top is only going to have a 20 gallon which will be located mostly over the top left support and a 10 gallon which will be mostly over the right hand support. The middle is just going to be used for supplies. i also need to take down the stuff on the walls. This was my oldest son's room, but he moved out years ago and while I am a fan of Deadpool, posters aren't my favorite look.
  9. One of the few things I do not like about where we live, is the fact there are no clubs or even fish stores within an hour and a half drive of us. My wife and kids are getting so tired of hearing about fish stuff, but I have no one else to talk to about it.
  10. Love that look! I wondered how well they did "spread out", now I know, thanks.
  11. Today I set up my very first 55 gallon tank. Well it's not set up, I just moved the other tanks around so it would fit on my block and 2x4 stand, but I went and picked up the tank and got it sitting on the stand. Taking my time with this one. I have my substrate picked out and that's about it. No idea yet on what fish I'll put in there.
  12. I changed the spark plug in the mower and mowed a part of the lawn wearing a dead-pool t-shirt and pajama pants. Retirement is pretty laid back. 🙂
  13. Couple of shots of some of the fry. Realized I've been here for weeks and shared pics of our dogs, but not a one of the fish. I lost another adult guppy from the heater fiasco, so I just have two adult females left, but all of the fry seemed to come through just fine. There are roughly ten of them. Starting to get some hair algae in the tank too, but I'm okay with that. I have some cherry shrimp coming from Aqua Huna in a few days, so after they spend some time in the QT tank, they'll be moving in here... Although... the 45 tall is about ready, so I might move all of these and the shrimp into it and save this tank for a specific strain of guppy. Thinking Moscow right now. Bought one of the heater controllers @Daniel recommended too, so hopefully that will drastically cut down my chances of heater induced murder happening again.
  14. This is pretty much my story too, although it was about 40 years for me and i still have two adult children living at home. 🙂 We have a large walk-in basement that is nice and bright with some large windows. We currently have two large rooms down there for the kids bedrooms, so my fish room is upstairs, but as soon as either of them move out, I am going to move everything down there and get some larger tanks. For now I just have two 45 talls, two 20s and a ten... and I just bought my first 55 a few minutes ago. I'll go pick it up tomorrow. I've only been back to the hobby for about two months now and only one of my tanks even has fish in it... lol. I have some guppies in one of the 20 gallons, but I bought some cherry shrimp yesterday from Aqua Huna, so in a couple of weeks the guppies should have some friends. So what made me take the hobby seriously? Not really sure, other than a responsibility to the fish. I want them to thrive and live long happy lives, so I am learning (and re-learning) everything I can.
  15. Sorry for the blurry pic. This is Eleven. She is half chihuahua and half papillion. This was the day we brought her home. Another one of Eleven playing. This is Pugsley. She had to wear a the ring so she wouldn't bother a wound and she wasn't too into it. Better than the cone though! And lastly is my buddy Tucker. He is a rescue we've had for about 4 years now. He sits by my feet all day long. He loves to lean against my leg as I work too. Oh and the cat... Ubuntu This pic is pretty old. He is 17 now and pretty big and a total jerk.
  16. Appreciate the tip! i stopped using Facebook a few years ago though. I know there are quite a few decent fish related groups on there, but the rest of it just isn't worth it.
  17. That's going to be an interesting mix, if it works! 🤪
  18. I'm in NY too, but waaaaaay upstate. I can't find a pet store or fish group anywhere within 50 miles of me, so I am stuck going to petco/petsmart. Luckily buying online is pretty easy these days and there are a ton of good sellers out there for plants and fish. Love the pics, some awesome looking fish friends there!
  19. @Danieldo you have a favorite controller? By time our long winter hits, I'll have three tanks with fish, plus the QT tank. I'll have a 55, a 45 tall , and the 20. We keep the house in the mid 60s for the winter and we normally just wear slippers, and sweaters ( yes and pants :P) instead of heating it more. I suppose I could keep my office/fish room warmer, but I think I'd prefer to warm the tanks instead.
  20. Ugh already lost some fish. The first 20 gallon I bought was one of those kits and came with a cheap tetra heater. It stuck on yesterday. Temps got well above 90 degrees in the tank and I lost one of the males and one of the females. All of the fry seemed to make it with no problems though The other male and three females all seem fine this morning too. I had planned to switch out the heater and actually had a better aqueon one on hand, but I thought I'd at least get a few months out of the cheap heater. It didn't even last two full months. I should have switched it out as soon as I got the better one. Live and learn.
  21. Hey, we have a Tucker too. He doesn't really watch the fish though. He pretty much just sleeps on my feet and yells for his dinner.
  22. Wow got some guppy fry already! I wasn't ready for them though.I only have 4 females in the tank... One of them must have been pregnant when she got here. I ran out and got a breeder box and was able to save 5 of the fry. The tank is planted, but the plants are all still pretty small, so there isn't a ton of cover. I just put a couple of the plastic plants in there to give the other fry a little more space to hide for now too. I changed my plans up a little bit too. The guppies are in a 20 gallon, and I was going to put something else in the 45 gallon, but I think both tanks will be guppy tanks now. I built the cinder block and 2x4 stand, so i am going to get a 55 gallon for "other" fish. This is turning into my little fish diary. 🙂
  23. Semi-related to your post... As a newbie, I had no idea the Aqueon lid advertised 36" x12" was actually less than 11 and a half inches deep, by design. I picked one up at Pet Smart, thinking it would fit my 45 high, but it doesn't. It came in a very generic white box, but it should have had the actual dimensions on it instead of saying it was 36" x 12".
  24. My second tank finished cycling today! I moved the guppies I had in the 10 gallon into the 20, early this morning. Looks like they are doing well! So excited to get the 45 high cycled too, but even though it's already been a week and a half or so, I probably won't put any fish in that one for at least another 6 weeks. I'm not even really doing much to speed up the cycle other than putting the API quick start in it. I want to get the right combo of plants and driftwood set up in that one and I'm really taking my time deciding on what fish I want. leaning toward some of the smaller rainbows as the main fish. I'm currently setting up the cinder block and 2x4 stand for a 55 gallon too. I hope to have that tank home by next weekend. So I started the hobby back up less than a month ago, and I have a 10 gallon hospital/QT tank, 2 20 gallon tanks and a 45 gallon. I have another 45 gallon too, but the center brace is broken on that one, so I need to put a new top on it. I might not even do that and just give it away as a reptile tank.
