  1. ditto the skewers. It actually is pretty easy to just determinedly keep twirling it out, and eventually it gives up.
  2. In my situation it was more that they were underfed. I put a couple of shrimp in to nanny the eggs, then once they were free swimming I added a few snails, and because the ziss is constantly refreshing the water with an air uplift and screen sides, my fry were effectively in the 40 breeder, with 40 gallons of circulating water, just restricted from moving around the tank. The only trouble I had in the beginning is that my flow rate was too high, making the fry work too hard and washing food right out of the box before they could eat it. This became more obvious when I moved from vinegar eels (which I can't see) to baby brine (which I could see being washed out of the box). The ziss breeder box is a crazy well engineered thing. Just brilliant. I do think a valve on the airline to control the flow is a great idea.
  3. I just had this happen--did not know these COULD bloom. At night they open and the smell is HEAVENLY. I feel blessed, and I am not the religous type. Dracena fragrans is the right name, for sure!
  4. Ooooh, yeah, I did get condensation on an indoor water test.
  5. To be honest? If I were doubting myself at all, I would just dry the dickens out of it and refill. Test again to rule out paranoia. With a tank that size it is worth the extra step, for sure.
  6. If he stops to eat, then he CAN STOP, so it isn't neurological. Oscars are goofy and moody from what I understand, and I suspect pretty intelligent. I think he is bored. I agree with the suggestion to give him toys--ping pong balls, or if you could find them one of those cat toy balls that is a plastic cage with a bell in it or a tiny whiffle ball. Stuff some meaty food in there make him bash it around to get it out. We used to have horses that got bored in their stalls and would repetitively rock foot to foot or swing their head, pace in circles--it is like that. We would give them toys, one favorite was a laundry detergent jug, with a few holes, and a handful of grain in it, tied to a string on the rafters. They would shake it and bash it to get the grain to rattle and then fall out. It really settled them down. The horses wanted out. He may be asking for a larger tank or a major rescape.
  7. I would NOT medicate at this time. Let them settle first, and eat, before you even think of it.
  8. All you can do is keep the water as clean as possible, at their prefered temp, lights off, and in a day offer the tiniest bits of high value food. If they will eat, all is not lost. If not...well...
  9. @Daniel I have always wondered, can't pollen be saved? I mean, I seem to remember it is sometimes viable and stable for long periods if kept dry?
  10. does he stop to eat? or when you approach the tank and look like you will feed him?
  11. True. However, my 2x4 are just supporting the frame, which was my point. Sorry that was not clear, and I think most of us understand that the frame is the major structural component of these type of tanks, so that may have been a pointless distinction. If a 10g is 100lb filled, each length of 2x4 is really supporting a fraction of that, and across a very small distance, and the weight is also being redistributed by the frame of the tank. While 2x4's vary in quality, any (flat/straight/true) 2x4 should be able to manage a 3" cantiliever, even laid on its side, as should a 1/2" piece of ply, when supported along the majority of its length. However, excellent catch on the broken frame. I did miss that.
  12. @TimDeck You need to upload to youtube (or similar) and then just share the link. It will automatically embed, and look like it is in the post. We can't host video here on the forum, the storage fees would be insane, and the load times would be impacted.
  13. It would depend greatly on the thickness and quality of the plywood--1/2"-3/4" marine grade plywood would be safe in my experience. Bookshelves are made most often of particle board. It is NOT the same. 2 lengths of 2x4 running the full length of the tank would also be safe in my opinion. I have a 40 breeder sitting on the floor that I wanted boosted up just a bit to keep the roomba from smacking it, and it is sitting on flat 2x4s painted black. My bigger concern here would be that it is right next to the bed, and you are creating a top heavy cabinet with a narrow base. Knocking into that at night, you could potentially tip the whole thing over.
  14. Is it anything like the behavior in this post by @HenryC? actually, i think it is the second video of the green terror I am remembering. Basically I wonder if your guy got big, grew up, and got bored?
  15. Lol, given my abysmal record with the first batch I thought I would end up with 10-20 more and then stop. My family is probably going to kill me...
  16. alternatively you could keep the scape clean and spare and get a little school of chili rasboras.
  17. In the long run I vote yes to the puffer. But I would get the plants really growing, then I would get shrimp and small "pest" snails really really going. Once those are an established colony, THEN add the puffer.
  18. at pH6.5 they were protected from the ammonia. At 8.2 they would NOT be. You did the right thing.
  19. I am in soooo much trouble. The first batch had 10 survivors. this batch had 147. I am going to need more tanks... and a venue to sell them! Dear heaven, I did not expect them all to make it!!!
  20. I would add to the above, fast fish first. I know that in the case where my order was stuck in the mail for 10 days, the fish arrived skinny, hungry, and with minimal waste in the bag--they made it because the seller routinely fasts before shipping. Somewhere on this site I asked a question for shipping tips and got a bunch of youtube videos. I suspect you have seen those. What you want to know is more specifically about aquabid?
  21. My partner's kid turned 12. He made her this. Thought it was cute. I suggested the pumpkinseed plants, and the Nerds gravel, which reminded me of the cereal substrate post recently...
  22. Great photos! I am about to move up my second batch of EBA, fingers crossed that I can combine the batches. My first batch is about pumpkin seed sized, how long to get to the 2 inch range do you think?
