  1. It might've been a recent livestream where I think Cory mentioned anti-parasitic meds kill live parasites, but not eggs. Is it worth keeping fish in quarantine and giving them a second dose of parasite meds a few weeks after the first dose? Vary depending on species or circumstances? Curious to see what people think.
  2. When I've used it, it usually takes a couple big rinses and water changes at setup to get it less murky.
  3. Nice Amazon puffer, also cool to see the centipede knife. I recall talking to a European knifefish keeper a few years ago who kept them in groups like glass knifes.
  4. I like black diamond blasting sand because it holds plants down well, and doesn't show mulm due to the color. Cons: plants don't grow especially fast in it (crypts and vals do well), and needs root tabs. I've also used Eco Complete, which doesn't hold plants down as easily, but has a nice naturalistic look, grows most plants well, but also needs root tabs. Ordinary pea-sized aquarium gravel, likewise, has the same qualities as Eco-Complete, but tends to hold plants down pretty well, too. These are just my experiences with substrates.
  5. I'm having the same issue I'm having the same issue with my cardinal tetras--a weird assortment of bubbles that have a wormlike white squiggle in them. Seems like a cyst-forming parasite. I'm planning to treat mine with anti-parasite meds to see if it has any effect.
  6. I'd never heard of this before, but upon googling it seems plausible. My phone takes poor pictures, but I'm noticing some of the bubbles have a small white twist in them that could concievably be a protozoa. What do you think?
  7. Having a rather weird problem with my cardinal tetras, as they appear to be getting gas bubble embolisms due to water changes. Lacking an appropriate sink I'm using buckets filled from the bathtub and pumping the water into the tank with a small aquarium pump and tubing. I've tried leaving the water overnight, starting with warmer water, and making sure to break the stream against the surface of the water, but for some reason the oxygen (or whatever is causing this) in the water seems to remain so saturated as to be giving them the aformentioned gas bubbles--they're pretty hideous and I feel bad for them, but its the fastest method of water changing for me. Interestingly, nothing else in the tank is affected--glass fish, cories, loaches, gouramis, SAEs, and others all suffer no ill effects. Any ideas for how to un-supersaturate my water before adding? Airstone overnight? Hydor wavemaker? Something else? Thank you for any input, folks.
  8. @Robert Sounds a lot like my female, she mostly scooted around in the undergrowth looking for food. The males have a much more solid color, while the females get that mottled look. My LFS got a few females and one male; I was one of a few with a female--another customer's was reportedly more bitey, but settled down a bit. According to the store manager who spoke to the male buyer they said the male was way more vicious, and really only tolerated fast fish in the same tank (I don't know if that person still has it, I should ask him about it).
  9. Loved my female sumatran red tail red eye puffer (pretty sure that's what you've got there). Ended up rehoming her since she ate my entire cleanup crew, but she was reasonably peaceful toward other fish after a week of nipped fins. Liked to eat frozen foods, vibra-bites, and even nibbled on Hikari algae wafers. Will probably try to get one again when I can do a small dedicated tank.
  10. Medium Pre Filter Sponge WWW.AQUARIUMCOOP.COM Increases Filter Capacity Reusable, Extends the life of other media Coarse Foam to extend time between cleaning The medium pre filter sponge is... They have large, medium, and small.
  11. I use the medium size intake on AquaClear 50s and 30s; I think the large for 70s and up.
  12. With my AquaClear filters, I like to spraypaint the intake black with Krylon Fusion, and use a Coop sponge on the intake. I fill the chamber with coarse sponges but don't back it tight--I also like to leave about an inch at the top to run fine filter floss (just WalMart pillow stuffing) as mechanical filtration, which I swap out as it gets clogged.
  13. Those Australian gobies look amazing (they remind me of American desert pupfish) as do the Flexipenis Vittata.
  14. You should check out the New England Cichlid Association on Facebook. A lot of rare Victorian keepers there. And from what I understand a number of species are not as aggressive as they get a bad rap for.
  15. Waiting with the patience of an ancient monk for some phraectolemus ansorgii (hingemouth/mudfish) from a local LFS that's good at sourcing oddballs. Lack of shipments due to the pandemic has made it a long waiting game, but it has given me time to get the tank in better order.
  16. I'm a big fan of ricciacarpos natans, a small, floating liverwort. Easy to grow, looks interesting, and its easy to pick out of the tank if it gets overgrown, which can be a challenge with duckweed.
  17. I like Eco-Complete, but I find I need to use a deep layer of it (at least 2 inches), and really dig the plant down in there if it's a stem plant. For rosette plants like crypts, I sort of cram it down, and then try to very carefully not disturb the plant for a few weeks until the root hairs can cling to the eco-complete. They get really stuck-in once they're established, but that initial period is tough. I find sand the easiest to plant in (but obviously not the most ideal plant substrate for other reasons).
  18. MD Fish Tanks on youtube seemed to have pretty good luck with java fern, anubias, hygro pinnatifada (sp), and mosses in a goldfish tank.
  19. Someone at my LFS was talking up the use of Seachem Cichlid Trace in their aquariums, saying it improves their fish's coloration. As my interest was spured I looked into the the product line--I noticed that the Fresh and Cichlid versions of the product appear to have the same ingredients, for one thing. Nevertheless I'm curious about these, so I'm wondering--has anyone tried Trace products, and if so, what are the use cases for it? Definitely worth it, maybe worth it, or smoke and mirrors?
  20. An AquaClear filter done in the black plastic used in Seachem's Tidal line, that is also self-priming.
  21. Wet paper towel. I also use one of those cans of compressed air normally used to clean electronics to blast dust and debris off from the rim and edges of my tank (holding the trigger at half strength is usually necessary so I don't churn up water onto the edge!) This works well for getting dust off of the lid under the light, too.
