  1. @Joanie I have recently broken into cichlids with some rams and love their personality. I have heard Severna will eat plants, so just keep an eye on your guys! I'm very jealous by the way, I don't have room for the larger cichlids. Your fish and tank looks great!
  2. How did you accumulate that much mulm? Was it from running g the tanks that long or have you been putting filter cleanings in there?
  3. I think he meets the inch per gallon rule. 20 inch cat, 20 gallon tank. Should be fine.
  4. If it's been set up for a while (several months), I think you'll be fine. Even if it's a bit newer you are probably ok, especially with the sponge filter. You will remove some of the beneficial bacteria. I'd maybe fast the fish for a day before then a few days after you swap out the filters to help reduce the ammonia loss. Best would be if you can run both filters on the tank for a couple of weeks first but I realize that may not be possible.
  5. @Manny his little grins are quite amusing. @Gideyon I feel your pain. This one loves to climb on the couch and end table to get into this tank. My older ones listen to the rules about the tanks, but we are expecting a new baby in December. I can only how the new one isn't as interested in "swimming" with the fish as this one.
  6. Well, my 1.5 year old flipped open the lids on my canister filter while it was running today. Drained 8 gallons of water onto the floor before my 8 year old asked why the water was so low in the tank. Thank goodness he noticed! This is after I shop vacced the majority of the water. I strongly endorse the use of a shop vac if you find yourself in a similar situation. I still used a couple of bath towels to get the remainder of the water up, but I filled the shop vacuum up twice. Heres the offender overlooking the cleanup.
  7. Glad you got it working! I've been racking my head trying to figure out what else I'd could be!
  8. Check the T for leaks. Take a little bit of dish soap in water and spray it on the T. If you see lots of bubbles, its leaking out there. Air will take the path of least resistance. If all the valves are wide open, then you may not see air flow into one line if water. Also consider putting g a few lines in Buckets and start closing off the other valves. Hope this helps.
  9. If you were running dry fit, you could easily have been losing pressure through a loose fitting. The other possibility is your valve is plugged. Could be a little shaving of the PVC on the inlet.
  10. Can't take credit for this, but I do agree.
  11. Making progress towards another 40 breeder that I am going to stock with Saulosi cichlids. Frame for shelves that I will be relocating my crested gecko terrarium to this stand, as it is currently on a stand i built for a 40 breeder. Here is the stand that will hold my new tank. I built it to hold two 40 breeders. It could potentiallyhold a 125 6ft x 18 in tank as well.
  12. I know you got the sorority already, but I have a similar situation. I just have my wife bring the box in from outside and open the mud so they can animate to room temperature. I then deal with transferring the fish put of the bags when I get home. It's worked well for me the few times I've ordered fish.
  13. Yes, that would work. This is very close. Air pressure will build in the cavity, then flow to the closest opening. However, in the case of a loop, you will have flow from your pressure source (air compresser) to the farthest outlet on either side of the loop. You'll probably have a dead section on the far end of the pipe, as you would in a liquid system. The reality is that the flows of gas vs liquid system will be similar, but the startup and shutdown willbe different. Also, pipe failure of gas is typically quite a bit more spectacular than liquid, as the stored energy in compressed gas is orders of magnitude higher than liquids, as liquids are mostly non compressible.
  14. Dean was doing the air valves in one of Cory's videos setting up the fish room. Another YouTuber selling fish put out a video of him setting up his air valves for his new warehouse recently as well. On the condensation, this is possible, especially if the air cools back off after the pump. The only way to 100% mitigate this will be to mount your pump above the loop. However, if you have the pump inlet come into the top of the loop through 2 90s, then you will greatly reduce this risk. You can also make a loop below the pump inlet with a drain valve of you are worried about it and blow it clear occasionally. Cory's pumps are on the floor in his new fish room. I don't use one myself, but if he's not overly worried about it, probably not a huge concern.
  15. This is great! Thank you for documenting this. Its very interesting to see their development on the eggs, especially since I don't have the equipment to do so myself. I love this forum for the ability to share items like this with others!
  16. Inside I use an algae sponge on a stick (bought it that way, can't remember what they called it or where I got it). On the outside, either a paper towel or regular towel and RO water in a spray bottle. I have used the vinegar method above for stubborn spots on my lid
  17. Maybe try it in the room, but leave a T and valve in the line where you'd want to run the pipe or hose to the potential exterior location. Add a valve at the inside location as well. That way you can swap it to outside the room if you want to later. Can't remember where you are located, but i'd be much more worried about summer than winter with the air pump outside the room. Granted, I'm in South Louisiana, so our winters can be like some northern summers.
  18. I have 4 kids and one on the way, and they have an army of 10 or 15 cousins that comes over regularly. I find that my 4 year old and those around that age and up can understand not to bang on the glass or stick her hand in the tank without permission once you explain it to them. My 18 month old does not. It is a constant battle with him not to get into the tanks. And I don't have a dedicated fish room, so my tanks are in the living room (currently 3). He really enjoys the duckweed and frogbit, and since he sees me pulling it out, he does the same. We are set up so that we have no major safety concerns, just mess and fish stress. Feeding is another issue. I let them help, but after a few major overfeeding events, I now place a fair amount of food in their hand to prevent that.
  19. In my other hobby, the large hobby organizations does an annual survey to see a number of thing about the hobbyists, including demographics. Its anonymous, and i always find the results interesting. Maybe thats something the Aquarium Coop club can do? @Zenzo
  20. Do you think I have a male and female, or are these both males? I'm pretty sure this one is male with the streamers off his tail. I am not sure about this one though. Here they are side by side. What do you think? 2 males or a pair?
  21. I met another local fish keeper through Facebook and we met at a big box fish store to swap some snails I bred unintentionally. He mentioned Aquarium Coop, so I checked it out as my first foray into FishTube and have been hooked since.
  22. Agree, staghorn or some form of hair algae. One thing I've done is reduced overfeeding (I tend to do this) and this helped me.
