  1. Definitely welcome in! There are many neat things to keep it interesting.
  2. It’s good to know it’s allowed. Nice colors and the fins are noticeably longer. I like the silver tips on the one too.
  3. I’ve listened to the aquarist podcast where they talk about that sunfish a few episodes. They are colorful, small/micro fish and eat live foods I’m currently looking for them. I might go on a Road-trip trying to find some this summer.
  4. Such a fun topic especially when it can be done in smaller containers although maintaining a proper temp and parameters would be harder. Thanks for the presentation. I'm getting some floating plants so i can grow them out some to protect my fish this summer. I'm listening to the live now. how does everyone deal with ph with all the rain?
  5. I did a spreadsheet a few years ago so i have an outdated template. Thanks for the number reminders. It is a hobby and i think if i am going to start breeding again like i did when younger before college when things were easier i need to pick one piece at a time. For safety sake i plan to breed a few things mainly for myself at first and I plan to sell to my local area first. i had found sites i could buy shipping materials for ok prices if i go all in but it's a slippery slope so i reign that in knowing selling something is not the same as making profit. I talked to a fish keeper today when i went on a fish run an hour away. I've talked on facebook to him and i bumped into him at the store. He has over 48 tanks mainly for himself selling off a few batches at the fish auctions nearby. i am no where near that. I just plan to get a few more tanks to be able to buy a few more fish for now and try to breed them. If things were simple i'd pick all sorts of fish and breed them like selectaquatics does bringing out the colors over time. They found a niche market but i am just trying to expand my hobby for now knowing i need to be a bit smart about it or i'll spend way too much.. Trying to organize a little space so i can get to all of the tanks also which is why i'm looking at different shelving options. i have a big wooden work bench that will probably do for now until it's warmer.
  6. I was planning on a shelf of 10 gallons and another with 20 gallon longs for the bigger fish and grow out tanks for the fry. I'm planning on breeding up things i can sell largely online to recoop some of the costs in time. I think i mainly just want to keep more fish and i don't currently have the tanks for it. I saw homedepot had a shelf and they also have a steel shelf that's much stronger i also was looking at to hold everything. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-4-Tier-Industrial-Duty-Steel-Freestanding-Garage-Storage-Shelving-Unit-in-Black-77-in-W-x-78-in-H-x-24-in-D-N2W772478W4B/319132737 https://www.walmart.com/ip/Hyper-Tough-4-Tier-Wire-Shelf-Unit-Chrome-1400-lb-Capacity/559553159 I looked at both of these and I also have some possible plans for building one with plywood. I might be able to make one, i'm kind of handy but it takes me a while. So any tips on tank sizes and any insight into the stand type.
  7. Beautiful fish! The spawning mop, is it one of those green wool ones, bought or did you make it? i'm curious since i'm looking into getting one.
  8. i think mine stays open by the owner and a friend working most of the open hours. I try to support by buying what i can there, mainly fish. Mine had some nice looking plecos that remind me of the select aquatics ones i've seen pictures of. Clubs are a goal of mine to visit this year. I'm going to Syracuse to their annual auction in a month. I hope you find one too. It seems a lot of clubs became inactive for 1-2 years but are starting up again after delving through my local states for them.
  9. I’ve been looking into raising rainbows! I think I need to setup more tanks before the Spring fish bug gets me fully! Pseudomugil gertrudae Are another I’m looking into. Maybe if you plan to sell them find a fish that you don’t see many of around you. Of course it’s best that you like to look at them too. If I were to want a less involved breeding I’d choose a planted neocaradina shrimp with sponge filters.
  10. Welcome in! Many friendly people here with lots of knowledge. I’m happy that you’re finding goals that make you happy. I look forward to any tank/fish pictures you want to share.
  11. i like to use 1 Xtreme Aquatic Fish Food - Krill Flakes 2- NLS Thera A+ 3 Hikari algae wafers 4 microworms mainly the summer and fall. my fish seemed to be ready to breed more often with them. i have the NLS but i forgot about it for a month. That's what my fish are getting tonight!
  12. seems you are doing things right. maybe it needs to season more? Completely understandable with shrimp, they are safer with a sponge and that's what i'd prefer too for that size tank!
  13. To add my guess while asking for more information maybe they are missing calcium in enough quantity. Do you have crushed coral or add something to mineralize the water? Years ago i had great success with shrimp when i had well water. They loved the extra calcium and minerals and then i moved to the city nearby with very soft water losing many of them. i now have some crushed coral in my hang on backs HOB's. I know it's possible in smaller tanks since i've seen many examples, the one thing is they need an established tank to have things to munch on and thrive.
  14. Hmm, I see. My substrate was from a smaller tank when I upsized my tank so it wasn’t enough. Weirdly enough I had bought more but I forgot about it, so now I’ve ‘found’ it. I look forward to your tanks progress. your fish seem happy! My cories in the past did not appreciate my move so I lost them. I probably stalled my cycle or something.
  15. The rocks do like nice, I added some to my tank and the stones look natural. I can connect with the plants needing more gravel, one of my tanks didn't have enough gravel so my plants would pop out of the ground sometimes if I disturbed the gravel.
  16. Welcome on in, it's so nice to see such a nice tank. Your Discus especially is very pretty.
  17. https://www.aquariumcoop.com/blogs/aquarium/baby-fish-food This gives a longer explanation. They are fresh water microorganisms that eat bacteria that are eating organic materials that are breaking down. People use them often to feed (baby) fry fish.
  18. Thanks, I appreciate the feedback. This was me probably fighting off impulse buying by talking it out. I'd like to avoid unnecessary heartbreak. I might end up for the next 3 months getting a few more white cloud minnows when i find some and trying to breed some of them. I think it would be fun to try to raise up some fry again. The store only had two when i went a few months ago and no luck finding more for a while. I fully read your username this morning and i had a good laugh discussing platy's. I have added them to my list of fish that seem interesting. They have nice colors. I grew up with a community tank i shared with my brothers, i believe we had swordtails, platy's and eventually a few male guppy's. If i still want a betta in a week i have a cycled 10 gallon i set up last year for green water that now has a few neons. I could put a betta in there.
  19. I just dialed in my lights figuring out why my fluval 2.0 wasn't as bright as it was supposed to be. I'm probably aiming for a 29 so i'll buy more plants to have a green aquarium and i'll update with pictures of the tanks growth in Journals. I've watched that channel, i'll look into it. It makes sense that not all of them will get along. Maybe a bigger piece of driftwood in the middle and plants on the sides. i haven't tried swords in years.
  20. i'm going to look into platies more. I had some years ago when i was in 5th grade so it would be neat to at least research them more. I think i will avoid planning to add a male Betta. I should just keep the females.
  21. I have one of these small tanks. I misplaced the filter in a move so i use a coop sponge filter for it. My thought was it's a smaller tank so a HOB might create too much current if it's too strong but one for the size should be fine. I only had larger hob's that wouldn't fit well so i chose the sponge filter making it into a shrimp tank
  22. I watched KGTropicals setting up betta tanks. I could rewatch some of those for inspiration and safety tips. Any suggestions on a dither fish? Most of the fish that can be alone i can think of are related to Bettas so a no go, like a honey gourami which is what i thought of first. i could go larger, i have a whole wall that i could put a stand on and the floor underneath has beams in my basement so it should be no problem weight wise. I'm trying to ease into actually doing it but my eagerness to plan it out is fully there. 🙂
  23. My dad had a goldfish when i was growing up but my first fish were Betta's. I just read someone did 1 male and 4-5 female Betta's. I guess it might work if personalities mesh but i think i'd start with just females. I've seen so many nice looking ones around me. Years ago they seemed less colorful but some rival the males it seems. I'd probably in time want to make it a community tank so i'd pick non fin nippers so no rosy barbs. Has anyone had experience on this or is it better to keep it a Betta only tank? So, what size tank would be good for 5 females. Maybe a 20 or a 29? i have an extra HOB filter and a sponge filter that i could transfer over if i need a new tank to jumpstart the nitrogen cycle. i'd do proper testing and add in a lot of java moss with some ground plants not adding fish until it's settled. i think i could add in mystery snails to help keep the cycle going until i add the fish in.
  24. The smaller is my 10 gallon with neon tetras and one blue mystery snail. The larger is 29 gallons:2 white cloud minnows, 4-5 Cardinal tetras, 2 blue mystery snails. I was super busy at work and getting stressed. so, i topped up my tanks and only did water changes if the test kit showed I needed it. I have plans to keep up with it and divide the plants when they start to multiply like i've done in the past. Documenting some of it will help me keep an eye on the progression. i have a small notebook and a folder on my computer for the pictures so that should help with motivation. Any tips are welcome. I am slightly worried about the mystery snails being too prolific since my fish are probably too small to snack on the small ones. I had nerites a few years ago so this is my first time with mystery snails. I might sell some of the more colorful ones and my local pet shop guy said if I can get them to the size i bought them he'll take a few every now and then. Ebay is an option but i'd prefer to just control it to a manageable level. "edit" I'd actually be very excited for more snails but reading online lists off people with problems with too many but i'd be happy to have more. I have crushed coral in my hang on backs.
  25. More of the cleaning i did yesterday but late so i couldn't see much until it cleared. I did probably 50% water changes and gravel vacuuming. I needed to clean up the bottom and rinse out my java moss. I tested the bigger tank and the smaller and the nitrates are probably zero so i setup an alert to remind me to add easy green since i've been forgetting. After the cleanups i added 3 blue mystery snails. They are moving about so probably happy overall.
