  1. It’s good to have you in here. Any pictures? It can be really fun to have different types of fish together!
  2. What are they eating? all live foods? i'm looking to raise some killifish this year. Your annuals look very brightly colored.
  3. Thank you for the response. I’ll weed out any slightly colored ones. Probably a few drops of water got in the lid or something. i noticed I like testing a lot sometimes so the strips are convenient compared to the liquids. 🙂
  4. For the coop test strips, any ideas how long they last once purchased/opened? If there is an expiration date printed somewhere that I didn’t notice? I tested with mine and after comparing with a master test kit they’re still good. I just noticed a small bunch of them turning colors in the can so it got me wondering. Thanks for any help
  5. I think the Amazon sword is starting to grow some, it definitely stopped melting which is good. I’m checking my parameters and my ph is always below 7 so I added some crushed oyster shell to my HOB. just a bit and the mystery snails are zooming around all day rather than just at night which seems good. This tank is currently my quarantine tank and probably where the fish will stay at least for a while. If there were any signs of illness I have a 10 I was going to use but they have all been eating happily since day one. I’ll take a better picture soon, the rummy nose tetra’s really enjoy swimming all around now running close when they see me.
  6. Raising BBS to feed my new fish, also encouraging the white clouds to plump up for a breeding project I hope to do. I’m using a metal cone light for my 10 seeing more plant growth. Seeing changes encourages me to look in more often
  7. I've heard good things about American flag fish, they have nice color and they apparently eat Black beard Algae BBA which can be useful. Bolivian rams can be nice, they are more peaceful than electric blue rams
  8. I use the coop brine shrimp hatcher using 1.5 - 2 tbs of salt with half a teaspoon of eggs, any more and i'd need more than 2 active tanks. I also don't dechlorinate hearing it helps to hatch the eggs. My area doesn't add huge amounts so it's been fine. when warmer mid summer i can get a small hatch after 24 hours but the majority 36-48 hours in. i have an overhead light on all day.
  9. https://podtail.com/en/podcast/the-aquarium-guys/-62-plant-fertilizer/ the aquarium guys have an episode talking about plant leaves, specifically 34 minutes in they talk about holes in leaves and doing water changes replenishing the fertilizer. Any signs the leaves are being eaten by something small? it might be a nematode but probably not. I agree it would seem worth it to do more frequent water changes so you can dose fertilizer providing any nutrients the plants are needing. -This is if it starts yellowing before it becomes dark green and then black like you said. Yellowing of the areas between the veins (interveinal chlorosis) is usually indicative of manganese, iron or magnesium deficiency. Iron deficiency affects the youngest leaves first, whereas the symptoms of manganese and magnesium deficiency tend to start in the older leaves.-
  10. Welcome in! Having a lot of plants does help even out the edges of a cycling tank which is nice and they look good too.
  11. i made two rings from air line tubing that i float keeping the plants out of them to allow light to get down. They are also good spots to feed fish. I saw many examples being sold with floating plants giving me the idea. one example of it. Do what you want i'm just sharing ideas. 🙂 I bought scarlet temple before my fluval 3.0 sized for my tank so the plant faded so light is definitely important. The newer coop lights seem to be nice and bright if i buy more lights.
  12. I also noticed losses at the beginning. My smallest shrimp survive if my water parameters are different from the store in livable ranges while the full sized ones in my experience die off most often. If only somewhat hard i add calcium, coral or ground up clean shells (oyster) to supplement and the shrimp don't have molt problems like before.
  13. So many little ones! Do you have plans for them and how long for them to grow out? They’re getting to be big compared to the little specks they were!
  14. I took this during my tanks siesta time. My snails are more active now that I have crushed oyster shell I added to my tanks. They moved daily but are more active now which makes me feel I’ve made their home better! The shrimp I have in another tank seemed happier too with the extra calcium running around like they used to.
  15. If the Betta swims around happily and the shrimp are healthy then it's possible it's cycled or the plants are consuming it all. I'm curious if you add any fertilizers to help the plants? In time the Nitrate should show something. Welcome in and what a nice setup you have. It must be nice to look at daily.
  16. I like to have a HOB and a sponge filter like you said. Sponge filters are my choice in a shrimp tank but even in one of mine i put sponge on the HOB, to protect the shrimp, in that tank for more circulation and cleaning. A good sized sponge if that is all you are using should work but maybe keep an eye on the bioload to be sure the sponge is big enough to do it's job.
  17. I have had 2 years with 30 fish surviving from Petco but before i'd buy CPD's and a school of neon's and half died that night. After a water test my nitrate was low and ph nearly the same so i felt it was the fish being stressed. Now i pop in right when they get a shipment, if what i want is rare/hard to find buying it rolling the dice can work but i usually wait 2 days if the store has more than a few tanks with 1 fish dead. I buy from Petco yearly and i'm usually happy. They keep doing tank sales so i remember to pop in.
  18. My grandmother had the 55, it can be a tank for Discus although they usually need a 70-90 when they get big. The 40 breeder is better for plants and maintenance in my opinion. The 55 shows off schooling fish i think giving more swimming room back and forth. 40 gallon Breeder 36" x 18" x 16" 58 lbs 458 lbs 55 gallon 48" x 13" x 21" 78 lbs 625 lbs I read this site, https://aquariumfishcity.com/40-breeder-vs-55-gallon/ after writing the above. It might help give more viewpoints. growing up i liked 10's, 20L's, 55's but i kept hearing others say how they liked 40B's so it's up to you. The 40 is usually cheaper.
  19. so cute, they probably lay eggs all the time in the wild for plentiful times. I'd guess more hiding spots in the wild but also more predators.
  20. "it's great to see" your progress on so many live foods! I used to culture white worms and microworms. Gnats got into mine so i gave it up for a while. I plan to start again especially with inspiration like this post. All neat and organized, nice going. any tips on daphnia, i have just ordered eggs to start a culture of them. useful info. I have a coop brine shrimp hatcher that's up and running again. i didn't put enough eggs in but the few that i got sure excited my fish!
  21. I was looking into whether scuds were a good idea... Since i only have small fish, guppies are my current largest fish so the scuds probably would survive. It's confusing since i read pygmy sunfish and scarlet badis would eat them but i have shrimp so i wouldn't want any scuds to mix in with that tank. are they a problem now? is your shrimp tank safe from the scuds at least. It seems you had a lot of scuds. I read the scuds eat the same foods the shrimp eat so it would be a competition. any idea on what regular culling would be? a bigger fish maybe
  22. the plant in the left in a pot, is it an Amazon sword? I forget but I think it was. I gave it a root tab. A small update, my plants stopped melting. I’ve checked the parameters and did another water change adding more easy green. The main change is this bigger tank, 29 is my quarantine for cardinals, 4 female guppies, and 4 white clouds. I moved the extra white clouds I had before to my other tank for at least a month. 6 weeks probably to be sure the 29 gallons fish are healthy. I purchased more tanks and I’m going to start extra sponge filters for summer and the tanks for breeding projects. I’m planning on having summer fish projects so I’ll post again when I have more floating plants to grow out. My lights, the Fluval was on a smart plug. Now I plugged it into a normal one since I think it lost its programming when it shut off. It took me a while to realize since it still turned on just not as bright. I welcome any pointers but this helps me organize my thinking.
  23. neat. i think you can get points for raising a healthy plant that flowered in your aquarium if you are part of a breeding organization. I haven't looked fully into it but i've heard about it. Found a berried shrimp today while i did water changes. no pic but i'll keep my eye out for pictures next time. so far so good, i added them just 3 days ago.
  24. ohh, i had two teachers that had axolotl's, very neat. what do they eat? Welcome back in! Summer tubbing season prep for me. i don't have enough plants.
