  1. I picked up some pygmy cory’s at the LFS today and added them to the sewellia grow out tank. These little guys are awesome, hopefully ill have some fry to show off soon.
  2. Looks like you have a female and a male there. I can say bottom photo is definitely a male. The top pic appears to be female but id be more confident if i could see another picture with a slightly different angle. Female fins have a much rounder curve to them so theyre just not as easy to spot as the male which clearly has almost a 90 degree angle to the fin there. You may also be able to tell by behavior. If you have a male/female pair i bet that male is following her around everywhere she goes.
  3. Those temps are definitely fine mine have been breeding in a tank that has been consistently just below 80* due to summer temps. Its great that you have a lot of plants, if you have larger rock surfaces for them to hang out on and theyll love you for it. The more flow the better but mine love playing in the bubbles coming from the sponge filter also. I also found that my leopard danios were a bit much for the hillies acitivity wise and seemed to stress them out but that was in a smaller tank, as long as they have places to escape to they should be fine.
  4. So exciting! Its gonna be so cool getting that new space set up
  5. Thanks @KBOzzie59! I do have lots of notes lol. But i think the most important thing has been tank set up. Lots of rocks, plants, wood, hiding places and they definitely like at least part of the tank to have sand substrate.
  6. Just thought i would drop a little update in here. The Hillies have continued to spawn regularly. Ive counted about 12 fry so far now but there very well may be more. Theyre all looking happy tho and growing up quick!
  7. Ive made 2 stands now and for me it was the way to go because i enjoy it and i already had all of the tools and materials available at home so it was basically free as well. If youre doing it just because you enjoy the project go for it but ive found you can actually find furniture on craigslist that can be repurposed into an aquarium stand for much cheaper and with much less effort. Also as a bonus most of these items i.e. a small dresser or entry table will usually have drawers/cabinets and storage already built in. Just food for thought. Either way i hope you end up with something that works well for you.
  8. “Oto’s Gone Wild” LOL I love the title. Thanks for posting the vid @Dave23. Definitely looks like some spawning to me. That head wrap move is pretty crazy, but i guess its sorta like the T shape move Corys are supposed to do.
  9. I havent tried spinach yet. Ill give that a shot soon. You just put it in there raw?
  10. @Bill Smith those lights worked out perfectly. It really takes them to a whole new level at night. Makes ya wanna crack open a beer Kick your feet up and watch for hours.
  11. Update: The pond is doing really well. Spinach didnt make it through the weeks of consistent 100*+ temps but everything else is doing well. The dwarf aquarium lily is growing very slowly but surely. And the Danios are growing up so fast!
  12. My Otos love veggies. I peel strips off of zuchini, sweet potato or cucumber and i microwave one piece for a few seconds to soften it and hang it from the side of the glass with a suction cup clip. They didnt know what to make of it the first couple times i tried it so you may have to be patient. Now they chow down on that stuff till they look like little balloons. Mine also munch down on meaty sinking pellets from time to time.
  13. Thanks @MickS77and @Dean’s Fishroom for the info. It makes sense to me that breeding them would be similar to corydoras because they school with my julii corys alot and even eat their food regularly. My Corys just spawned for the first time so hopefully Oto’s are next. Ive been feeding italian zuchini, sweet potato, cucumber, repashy community. My Oto’s wont touch the algae wafers tho for some reason.
  14. Haha i bet its been a little hot out there for outdoor activities lately tho. Cant wait till things cool down a bit and i can get back out there
  15. Theyre actually both working great. The air pump gets enough sun so far to run 24/7 with no issues and has multiple settings which is cool. The lights seem surprisingly well built and are impressively bright, they can even be installed underwater. Lights Air Pump
  16. Hey Shane, Welcome. Im in the LA area so not too far fom you. I go out to apple valley to ride at Grange and to ride dirtbikes and shoot. Love it out there.
  17. That killifish is so rad! Also sweet closet!
  18. I really like that gravel! My danio fry are able to hide for about the first week in much smaller gravel so that should be great for egg layers. $4 is a steal, i thought i had done pretty well getting gravel for my pond on sale for around $25.
  19. Looks to me like you have pseudogastromyzon cheni. Its a chinese hillstream loach species. Gotta love a pet store that doesnt even know what species they have... Heres some more info
  20. All of my Oto’s are on the round side, but i noticed today that one of them has suddenly ballooned. Im hoping that shes a female packed full of eggs because i would love for them to breed! Have any of you bred Oto’s succesfully? And if so do you have any tips? Its my understanding that they dont breed in captivity very often. Ive tried searching for info about breeding them but it seems like theres really not much out there. Does anyone have any info on why no one seems to be breeding them?
  21. I decided its time to finally introduce some of my juvenile danios into the pond, which over the last day or so has become host to a ton of mosquito larvae. Ive been monitoring temps in the pond to make sure swings arent too extreme as weather here has ranged from highs of 108* to lows in the low 60’s. Temps in the pond seem to be fairly consistent staying in the 70’s so far. @Bob & @Bill Smith were curious how the tannins might affect PH. Testing the pond water revealed that the PH (7.6) is the same as my tanks, which was sortve a surprise. I expected it to be lowered somewhat. GH is about 60ppm lower than my tanks at about 6dGH (tanks at 9dGH). KH is somehow higher than my tanks at 8dKH (up from 5dKH) which seems odd to me. While the danios were temp acclimating i noticed something move and couldnt believe my eyes! There was a tiny danio fry swimming at the surface! @Daniel heres another example of having fry where you’d least expect it. I didnt even have fish in the pond yet but somehow i still have fry 😂. I had added water to the pond from tank water changes, i must've sucked up some eggs or tiny fry in the process. Anyway, i moved about half of the danio out to the pond today and plan on moving the rest out in the next couple of days assuming these are doing well.
  22. I had a bunch of expanded clay media left over so i decided to add some bucket planters for hydroponic veggies. Then used some more airline tubing to connect a second layer of drip irrigation to the buckets. So far its working out very nicely.
  23. Great topic @gcalberto. This is something that i feel very strongly about concerning dog breeds and have only recently asked myself these questions about fish breeding. Im looking forward to hearing other peoples opinions on this as well. Personally for me i draw the line when basic functions of the animal are impaired i.e. eating, swimming, sight, breeding and also when the breed becomes particularly prone to disease or sickness. If the animal is unhealthy or has trouble just surviving anymore its gone too far.
