  1. Although the manufacturers of fishing lures market red as attractive, red light because of its longer wave length attenuates rapidly as the depth of the water increases. It is not clear what kind of color vision fish actually have, but goldfish have been found to have four kinds of cones: red, green, blue and ultraviolet for detecting those color of light. I know honey bees perceive red as black.
  2. Book says submersed leaves of Limnophila look like Cabomba. Close up on leaves. I think if I post anymore from Godfey and Wooten somebody needs to buy another book. 🙂
  3. It didn't strike me as a Myriophyllum, but hey, there are a lot of different kinds of Myriophyllum. Here is what the book says: And my book cover the southeastern United States. That leaves a lot of areas uncovered! And my book cover the southeastern United States. That leaves a lot uncovered!
  4. I can see why all the surface area on lava rock would help with providing surface area for the beneficial bacteria. But I have also read that not all surface area is equal. The authors of this paper claim that the density of the Nitraspina, Nitrospinacacae, and Nitrospria bacteria (the famous beneficial bacteria) was much greater on the surface of plant leaves than either gravel or plastic (I didn't know that, I thought all surface area was the same, apparently plants enter into a beneficial relationship with bacteria and help provide the oxygen and organic carbon the bacteria needs).
  5. Maybe I should have listened to @Taco🙂
  6. Okay, I just shot this photo of C. demersum. One thing about hornwort, if it doesn't have horns, it isn't hornwort. This plant definitely has horns. I can't tell from your photo if yours does.
  7. Whoa! That is pretty cool! Definitively a Mycelium (fungus) of some kind. I bet it ultimately won't be able to grow well underwater.
  8. Man @Knew tooth is, it is hard to see how this thread won't end up violating one or more guidelines. So I am going to lock this thread. It might be interesting to hear how people use water conditioner, but start that in a different thread.
  9. Or, and it must have @TheDukeAnumber1 and his 3 hats that made me think of this. Let's just say he has all the fishy stuff he currently needs. Well then, if he likes Aquarium Co-Op, he would love some Aquarium Co-Op Merch. It is very popular in these parts. 11. Does your leaf have 'horns' on it? Like this? You will have to look real close to tell.
  12. Well at least we have narrowed it down to C. submersum or C. muricatum. According to the authors, hornwort is particularly difficult to key out and without seeds it is almost impossible to know for sure. The really cool thing is though is that it is not C. demersum, which is what you normally see.
  13. I am not sure there is a best, only a lot of 'it depends'. I am running 3 similar aquariums where the only difference is the substrate. So far the results are inconclusive. The Nermal tank has regular aquarium gravel and root tabs for fertilizer and has done well at growing plants but also has a bit of cloudiness. The baby's tears in this tank are outstanding. The Dirt aquarium which is a Walstad style aquarium has also been very good at growing plants, but has a bit of staghorn algae (which is currently declining without any treatment). The crypts and Vallisneria in this tank have taken off. The Eco-Complete aquarium has okay plant growth and the best water clarity so far. So, I guess the answer is, it depends.
  14. As a beekeeper I do a lot of woodworking making hives and such and I have a lot of lumber on hand. That board above on the sewing machine stand is the sister piece to this board which is a 36" x 20" x 2" length of red maple. It is the perfect size for 40 gallon breeder aquariums or any aquarium with footprint of a 40 breeder.
  15. I lived up in the hills of western North Carolina for a while in the late 1980s and my accent has never recovered from that.🙂 I also lived in Louisiana during the middle 1960s in a trailer park between Mandeville and Slidell across Lake Pontchartrain from New Orleans. My next door Gervy Soneji taught me how to count to 10 in French (actually Cajun) and properly clean a fish so as not to waste a scrap of meat. I dragged my wife into the fishroom and showed her your video and her response was "why don't you do a tank like that?"
  16. @StephenP2003 That is an awesome video. Very well produced. I just subscribed to your YouTube channel! And, nice aquarium too, it was quite the evolution from the first version of the tank to the current version. I was surprised to hear just a little bit of a southern accent (not that there is anything wrong with that). Seeing the video of your aquarium makes me want to do an attractive planted aquarium.
  17. @quirkylemon103 go ahead and post a link if you would like to the Greg Sage videos.
  18. The reason they are not concerned mostly has to do with plants. I have swordtails which are notorious jumpers in several aquariums without lids, but all of these aquariums have a fair amount of plants at the top. The only swordtail I have lost to jumping this year jumped out of pond and dried up on the lawn. I did lose a Vallisneria from one of my uncovered aquariums though.
  19. Okay, I can't wait to see a photo of this!
  20. I agree with @Streetwise. It is hard to crash your pH especially in one with a normal pH of 7.8. Not saying the pH in your aquarium won't go a little lower for a while, but short of not putting wood in the aquarium...
  21. Maybe your first guess on hornwort was correct after all. The only hornwort I ever see is Ceratophyllum demersum. But there is another species of hornwort that looks just like your plant called Ceratophyllum submersum. What do you think? It is native to Europe.
