  1. I agree with @lefty o, a 3 degree difference wouldn't worry me.
  2. Good question? Alaska is one of the few states that don't have a forum member that has identified as Alaskan (yet). Do you live in Alaska?
  3. I like history of science or history of technology. First book I read in the genera was 'The Pencil' by Petroski. It was about a million times more interesting than I thought it would be! Did you know Henry David Thoreau started off as a pencil maker? Me either. I just finished 'The Dream Machine'. In 1967 a good 10 years before Xerox Parc ,J. C. R. Licklider and Douglas Engelbart were showcasing windows, hypertext, graphics, video conferencing, the computer mouse, word processing, etc. in the Mother of All Demos. Its funny for the 1960s to be history, but it laid the ground work for today's world, including this forum.
  4. G'day mate! I wish I had an Australian accent, I would sound way more cool. I remember one fall Saturday morning in 1976 at the department store pet store doing inventory on all the animals. Beside literally counting every fish we also counted the snakes and other animals. The 5 foot long boa constrictor was strong enough to push the top off of his terrarium (even though the terrarium screen had bricks on it) and he had been missing for more than a week. Suddenly there was the blood curdling scream from the nearby toy department. I rushed over to see Laurie from toys pointing a row of 'Stretch Armstrong' figures. Sure enough, there was the missing boa constrictor behind the Stretch Armstrong figures. Being just beginning of video game era, Stretching Stretch and having him return to normal was considered fun. Supposedly during the late 1970s, Kenner Toys was the largest single consumer of corn syrup (Stetches secret ingredient) in the US.
  5. If you have plenty of light the hair grass should take off. I live in North Carolina and dwarf hairgrass (Eleocharis) grows everywhere. Here is a picture I took this morning of some growing emersed on the side of my driveway. It is tough as nails as long as it get plenty of light. The stuff from driveway turns into a weed when I put in an aquarium.
  6. Collecting native plants is fun. Last fall I collected in North Carolina: Banana plants Myriophyllum: Bladderwort: Dwarf hair grass: And others: And on your side of the globe popular aquarium plants like Pogostemon stellatus are native to you: Any plant that can be found in a billabong can't be all bad. 🙂 I don't treat my wild collected plants because I love finding the little surprises that come in with the plants. Most of which are fish food anyway.
  7. No straining, salt water and shrimp all go in together. I measured the amount of saltwater once and it was 1/8 teaspoon. I suspect the ocean reef crystals I use to make of the brine shrimp water is good for both the plants and fish in the tank in the long run. But it would take a very long run for the saltwater to amount to anything.
  8. This one is very similar to the one I use.
  9. You can get a NIST traceable thermometer that accurate to +/- 0.1 F and use it to calibrate your other thermometers. Here is the one I use: Once the thermometers are calibrated they hold calibration pretty well. Here are 3 calibrated temperature probes all in the same buffer solution at the same time giving close to the same reading: But the thermometer I use most often is my hand. If the water luke/cool it is low 70s F. If the water is lukewarm, it is middle 70s F, is the water is warmish it is about 80 and if the water is warm it is upper 80s.
  10. The make is APC and model is Smart Link 3000, basically just big lead batteries that don't come on until there is a power outage. The are inserted into the circuit between the main panel in my utility room and the fishroom. That is what you can see in the back of the photo with the big yellow plugs. They could power a server or a couple of aquariums for days. But once during a recent power outage I timed how long they lasted running everything in the fishroom (see photo below) and it was about 2 hours. It would have been longer without running the lights and computers. So they are good at preventing interruptions of power, but in a long power outage, nothing beats a generator.
  11. I have all the wall outlets in my fishroom supported by a couple UPS backups in my pantry. That way none of the outlets in my fishroom ever lose power even if I haven't started the generator yet. Is that what you mean?
  12. Those are little hydra. Opinions vary on whether they are good or bad. I like them, but I think that is a minority opinion.
  13. We have the answer and it is a happy one. She is accepted and is currently roaming the hive and assassinating any rivals. In the interim prior to her release the workers in the colony had started constructing 'queen cells' which are young larva in special cups that are fed 'royal jelly' in order to turn them from workers to queens. She has been tracking down each one of these and destroying them so as not to have any competition. Notice how black she is. It is a characteristic of Caucasian honey bees.
  14. I have had the best luck with the Moment lens for my iPhone, sparkling gourami fry here for example: Usually the best time of day to shoot is when you have the most light.
  15. This rack holds two 75 gallons, 1 up top and 1 down below. You can see both aquariums on the left most side of this photo: It easily could have been made to the configuration you are looking for.
  16. Things seemed calmer this morning, so I released the queen. Everything looked okay for the short time I could see her before she disappeared between the frames. Heart is still in my throat 😶 until I get a final answer.
  17. I know, I can't spell sometimes 🙂. @Crabby I keep the A. nijsseni in groups or pairs depending on the tank, but the 3 on the misspelled label only means that it is tank no. 3.
  18. I have had clams in my discus tank for about a decade and I can't say they do any noticeable water filtration. They bury themselves in the substrate so most of what you see is bunch of little pits. Here is some video I shot recently of one doing a walkabout:
  19. Generally 4 days which is today. But given the tricky situation I am gong to give it one more day.
  20. Yes, that will work. I have done it that way with no problems.
  21. Hide works, mods can see it but no one else can. Not sure about the glitches.
  22. Yes, it is one of the options under the three dots to the right.
