  1. @MickS77 that's great advice! I've quickly learned not to freak out about ph and just get worried if it becomes terribly unstable. You're also saving me from buying more test kits than I already have!
  2. @Daniel officially problem Number One for me! My wife calls our tank "the tranquility spot," as I obsess over every little detail and try not to test the water more than once a day. Ha!
  3. So excited about this forum and want to know: If there's one piece of advice us newbies absolutely need to know, what is it?
  4. @Cory and the gang -- I just bought a water sprite from Co-Op too and the poor little guy didn't fare the journey very well so I'm also wondering if it's just patience and fertilizer that will perk him up or if there is anything else I need to pay attention to as well. I removed the pieces that looked the worst with the thinking that it would help the rest improve.
  5. @gardenman @FishyThoughts thank you so much for the thoughtful responses. There is so much to learn and it really helps to have all of you to talk to.
  6. @JettsPapa no way! I didn't know that .25 ppm was the margin of error. Mine looks like it's somewhere between that and .5 ppm but very hard to tell so maybe I'm just being dramatic. 😂 I did have quite a few dead plant leaves from a water wisteria that didn't make it so I removed all of those too. Thank you so much!
  7. @lefty o I don't have anything in there except a small bladder snail, who of course is fine. I want to add some other snails and shrimp so I'm upset about the ammonia situation, although it isn't a huge increase. Oh! I did add some Seachem Flourish to the water.
  8. @lefty o I figured that's not the case but just wanted to check. Maybe you can help me with what I did wrong. I added the new plants, which kicked up a bunch of old plant leaves and I guess swirled around the brown algae I have so I did a water change. Did that adjust the water too much and cause the ammonia?
  9. Could it be a nutrient deficiency? Have you changed anything recently?
  10. @Marnol D oh that totally makes sense! How did you treat for BBA?
  11. That is just pure genius at work. I'm totally going to try that!
  12. That could be a dumb question but I've had a recent slight ammonia increase after weeks of stability at 0 and the only thing I've changed is I've added several new plants, which are the only thing in the tank right now other than a bladder snail.
  13. @M Brown here is the link to the info: https://www.aquariumcoop.com/blogs/aquarium/aquarium-algae You'll find Cory's video about algae eaters there. I have a 10g with brown algae so I was thinking of getting a couple nerites and some amano shrimp just as @James Black suggested and based on Cory's advice but that's just my interpretation of what I read/watched.
  14. I just got my first mossy guy so I'm interested to know more. @Penny is really knowledgeable -- take a look at her plant progress in the journal section -- and told me they definitely need frig vacations because they prefer cooler water. @Marnol D maybe the tank temp is too high for them?
  15. I'm interested to know more too! I have a new planted tank and I can't get the nitrates above 5 ppm but I don't do water changes as often as you do.
  16. Do you breed guppies our do you get the fry from your LFS?
  17. @Penny what a great tip! I'll have to give mine some vacations in the frig. Is there a rule of thumb or is it just intermittent holiday time?
  18. Yowza! What an incredible job! You're very inspiring!! Why do you put the moss in the frig? Super new to all of this and just got my first ball today. 🎉
  19. You know you're a total NERM when your phone alerts you to new activity on the forum and it's the most thrilling sound of the day. 😂
  20. What about the Eco-Complete makes it cloud the water? Staring at a new, cloudy tank over here that I started with Eco-Complete and several plants.
  21. I just got six new plants, including the cutest little Crypt Tropica. Horrible photo, but it's only about the size of a quarter. I love it!
  22. @Brandy thank you! I have one bladder snail that appeared in the tank a couple weeks ago and I just keep willing more to show up. Ha! I'll have to go pick up a few tank mates and get them to work in prep for the puffers. Is it a given that absolutely nothing else will survive in the tank with the puffers? (I need to prep myself so I don't get sad when everything disappears!)
  23. Hi Friends! I suddenly have what I think is brown algae all over everything in my new 10g tank, like overnight. Is there a cleanup crew I can get that would also survive if I get pea puffers? Should I let snails do the work and then just use them to feed the puffers? Thank you for the advice!
  24. @Irene @Connie what are your favorite Denver-area fish stores? 💙
