Uh oh. time to take inventory on nano air pumps & power banks. Also I gave Geppetto a brine shrimp today. To my knowledge he has never had one before. He very closely stalked it as it floated down and just before it hit the sand - CHOMP!- 1,529 replies

Guppysnail Aquarium Journal
Chick-In-Of-TheSea replied to Guppysnail's topic in Photos, Videos & Journals
That SUCKS! I'm so sorry! 😭 And that could have happened to any of us. Sometimes these critters get into predicaments, places we wouldn't even think they could fit in the first place. Yesterday Geppetto the betta went between those 2 massive red rocks. I had no idea he could get through there. He wiggled to do it. And came out the other side. The best part of this arrangement is the ornament on the right branch. It's interesting for sure. We do know the baby snails eat the crumbled clutch after hatching. And the eggs in my experience only look pink on day 1 or 2, then they turn like a cream color.- 2,923 replies

New magenta mystery snail clutch.

I never really give a thought to kH, I didn’t know that was a factor. I know My gH and kH are 80 and 180 and I may have mixed those readings up, maybe it’s 180 and 80. Anyway I guess it’s high(?) - I only know because it’s on a multi-test strip I use. -

First time feeding green bell pepper. Do they like it? Let’s see. Somewhere in this photo is a snail with a green pepper. And look at the little curl in Woodstock’s feeler! How adorable!! I then had to leave home to do adulting so I’m not sure if the shrimp like the green pepper or not.- 1,897 replies

This is so exciting! Sending good vibes your way! Feel free to flip through my journal of hatching the eggs. I got up an hour early every day and siphoned out old food, replaced it. (Did it before work so I didn’t have an excuse later like “I’m tired”). Also I took out inactive snails and watched them with my magnifying glass, because if one snail dies it can wipe out the whole crew (ammonia). I only returned them to the box if I knew for sure they were alive. (Tell you the truth that’s what took the longest because they can stay tucked in for awhile (shy snails). It got faster as the snails got bigger and I no longer needed the magnifying glass. They will put out one very thin (like hair) feeler before emerging with their 2 bigger feelers. It’s cute because they feel everything around their shell with the hair one like, is this safe? What’s around me? Hehehe. & I tested parameters every day w/ water change if needed. You got this @TeeJay Whatever tank they are going into, you can add some bottled bacteria even if the tank is seasoned, just as an extra precaution. -

That’s cool @TheSwissAquarist! How many fry did they produce and what was your setup like? I think @Fish Folk had like 50-something on his last breeding attempt? You see how he has an attitude, @nabokovfan87? He does not think his bubble nest is a Kodak moment.- 1,529 replies

Mystery snail ate my cherry shrimp??
Chick-In-Of-TheSea replied to EvesFishJourney's topic in General Discussion
I keep mystery snails with shrimp, and they live peacefully together. Mystery snails will certainly eat dead shrimp, and dead fish as well. Shrimp are fast and when they feel threatened they shoot off like a flash in the other direction. I think it’s unlikely the mystery snail killed them. I’d look at a few more possible causes of death such as: *stress from current (common with hang-on-back filters) *sucked into hang-on-back filter *Water changes of more than 10%. Shrimp are sensitive to change. *temperature of new water going in does not match temperature of tank *parameter issues (ammonia or nitrite present, or nitrates >40ppm) Would any of these apply to your tank situation? -
What did you get done today?

These week I got the aquascape done for this guy and then I made a water additive with the catappa leaves. Apparently he’s a happy guy because he made this big bubble nest.- 3,324 replies

I just realized my little cryptocorne is not getting any “sun”. I will have to move the catappa leaf over a little bit tomorrow, but I will be careful not to disturb his masterpiece. The plan was for the leaf to sink, but Geppetto had other ideas. 🙂- 1,529 replies

Chick-In-Of-TheSea replied to Chick-In-Of-TheSea's topic in Photos, Videos & Journals
Last night I boiled some catappa leaves and then let it steep overnight. I figured out what works best for water changes on this bottom tank. Rather than buy a new, smaller siphon, I just took the thing off the thing and now it works well, because the problem was, if the water level goes below the top of the rigid thing, the siphon stops. I only changed about 2qt of water here, just so that I could add some of the tannin solution to the tank. Thing without the thing: Dish pan: Someone appreciates the tank on the bottom shelf. I gotta keep an eye on that girl though. She’s a bit of a trouble maker! Also the community 29g has a lot of energy this morning.- 1,529 replies

Mystery snail eggs & inverts journal
Chick-In-Of-TheSea replied to Chick-In-Of-TheSea's topic in Photos, Videos & Journals
I tried to start duckweed once and they kept going up, grabbing a piece, and then “parasnailing” down to the bottom with it. 😆 My snails eat pretty much everything I’ve offered, except spinach. And I believe only one of the snails liked the asparagus, so I don’t feed that anymore. I also don’t think they like lettuce that much, but they LOVE cabbage!- 1,897 replies

Chick-In-Of-TheSea replied to Chick-In-Of-TheSea's topic in Diseases
The guy in the recovery unit (snail tank/post-quarantine observation area) has looked perfect for at least a few weeks so he has returned to the display tank this evening. He instantly found his school and it was back to business as usual. The guy in quarantine does not look any better. Nor any worse. He still has those black patches, gets a water change every day with prime, and today I’ve begun salt again at a level one. I guess we are in it for the long run. He enjoyed a few bloodworms this morning.- 133 replies

Same here. So I posted a free ad on the Nextdoor app and sold them to hobbyists near me for $1 each. I charged money because I didn’t want people getting a bunch of free snails to feed to their turtle, or their puffer fish, etc. Also I gave each new owner a care sheet and a little bit of food and cuttlebone. That’s awesome! Great job!

I did not get back to the store to get the King Koopa nerite. I don’t have any other errands to run for today and well, I don’t want to get out of my pajamas. Soooo… I will look for him another day. Maybe Monday when I’m out and about again. For now, I’m just enjoying the day off work and getting to know my new friend Geppetto (see my journal thread for story). Here’s his picture.- 1,897 replies

On the Lav’s snails YouTube channel she moves them out when they are peppercorn or pea sized. Here’s the size when I moved mine out. About the size of a piece of corn.
