  1. I noticed hatchlings this morning in my 10g community tank (the recent thread on full moon breeding got me looking closer...🤔) Pretty sure they are from a pair of sparkling gouramis, as I noticed a small bubble nest recently. This is the third time they have bred, but the fry didn’t survive. What can i do to help them this time? Total noob at breeding here! Sorry for poor photo, phone won’t focus on an object this small. TIA!
  2. One of my 18 Embers in a species only tank is looking very pale and slightly bloated. Middle fish in the attached photo. Noticed its condition about a week ago. No apparent change. Had it at least 6 months. Behavior is as normal but spits out flake food, only eating baby brine shrimp. Appears to be slightly labored breathing. Any comments welcome!
  3. Hey everyone, I’m thinking of setting up an RO unit for aquarium (and household) use. My pipes are 100 years old, pretty nasty and leech a bit of copper into the water. 🤢 Pipes to street are lead... ugh 🤢 I have a pretty good idea of how to set up the RO unit, but I’m unsure about re-mineralzing the pure filtered for aquarium use. Can anyone guide me on what is involved? Thanks!! 🙂
  4. Hey, i would like to share some aquarium videos. What’s the best way to go about it? Thanks!!
  5. Uniclife 25w, cheapie off Amazon. I don’t think it’s necessary, the lamp seems to keep the water warm enough.
  6. this guy shares the tank with the dark brown one. He is looking very colorful, too.
  7. I got these guys about three months ago, they were stressed at the store and looked very plain with washed out colors. The brown one looked almost gray and very sad. I use the Ziss brine hatchery to provide live food most days. Fish return the favor with splendid colors.
  8. I searched oil drip pans, there's a rubber backed carpet thing for garage floors that supposedly will absorb up to half a gallon of fluid! Also has potential (add a 5 gallon absorbent carpet to the list of deam aquarium products! 😆) . Thanks for the ideas, some definite leads here!
  9. Great ideas so far, keep 'em coming! Got to check out the oil drip pan, seems kind of fool proof. Can't be too ugly though. Constant battle to keep the floors decent, don't wanna stack the deck against me. The fiancee likes fish, but she's not exactly an enthusiast, loves her hardwood floors. 😅
  10. So I'm thinking of putting a 55 gallon aquarium in the sunroom of my house. I'm wary of water stains on the old varnished floor. I can pipe water in and out but as hard as I try, I always seem to splash water around my aquariums during weekly maintenance. Can anyone recommend a solution to protect the floors? Something like a drip pan with a raised lip. (A plain plastic office floor protector gets water underneath. Tried that! ) Thanks!!!!
  11. Is there a way to keep goldfish in a traditional style goldfish bowl humanely? What size bowl, what breed/variety goldfish, and what sort of filtration should I be looking at? Or is it a bad idea? Perhaps I should be looking at betta instead of goldfish? TIA !
  12. I thought I had lost a few Ottos, but they were hiding. Unseen for months in a heavily planted but only 10 gallon tank! I added new ones meanwhile, noticed the older ones had turned shades of brown, while the new ones are grayscale. The old ones went back to hiding. New ones tend to be in the general area of each other, perhaps they maintain visual contact for safety.
  13. So I got the Ziss bbs hatcher and its producing bumper crops of bbs!! More than i can feed in a day. What’s the best strategy to have an adequate amount on hand daily? Should I refrigerate the extra? Put the excess in a little holding tank and feed them spirolina? Or just hatch fewer eggs, more often? 🤔
  14. i went with Mick’s recommendation and got the Uniclife 25w, inexpensive and fits exactly. My first batch hatched in under 24hrs an omg, its an explosion of bbs! Need to put less eggs in next time!
  15. Put a sprig of hornwart into the sump, with a lamp on a timer and see how it does. If it thrives, you got a freshwater refugium, if it poops out, it was an interesting experiment. I have a pothos vine growing out of one aquarium, but it just looks messy to me. I like the refugium concept! 🙂👍
  16. great nano fish, I keep 4 in a 10g with pristellas. They lurk around here and there. One built a bubble nest but i never saw eggs or fry. Most days I hear them rattle at each other. They color up beautifully in optimal conditions.
  17. should the light be on at all times, or only for harvesting, if not needed for heat?
  18. update— about 2 weeks and 2x 20% water changes later, I had a major ammonia spike and a whole lot of plant melt. Lost a few fry, too. Seems Pete was right on. It appears the stuff continued to effect the water after it had accomplished its intended task. I will experiment with this stuff again but smaller dose, and more water changes.
  19. Book nut here! Any of the Amano books is amazing. They are mostly picture books but the captions and written content is illuminating. There is one instruction book by Amano, “Plant Paradise” kind of hard to find now. Also I ended up ordering this book and very glad I did:
  20. Thanks Jessica. Good advice! Yeah that aquarium is experimental, its a 15g tall I found in the trash. 😂 Im trying different lights and times to get enough light to reach the bottom plants without causing an algae explosion at the top. Currently the middle looks nice, the bottom is scraggly and the top has algae. 🥴
  21. How, for example, did Amano keep his val looking this good? Looks so natural with no visible evidence of trimming.🤔
