  1. I use a toothbrush to remove hair algae, just swish it around among the plant stems and leaves, or press loose moss against the glass and brush it carefully. Very satisfying. 😌
  2. Im running a single Tuna Sun on my 15g tall. I have to say its lived up to the advertising. Plants are healthy and less algae compared to tanks with other lamps, same schedule and water conditions. The only problem is it is a spot light. Illuminating a wide tank would be costly.
  3. Thanks for the replies! How do I test for nutrients ? Besides observing plants.
  4. Would there be any advantage to daily dosing of Easy Green? Was thinking of putting a dropper top on the bottle and feeding plants same time I feed fish. I guess the amount would be the weekly dosage divided by 7? I have a small graduated cylinder to initially measure the number of drops that would be. TIA!
  5. I have been seeing a lot of roots shooting out mid stem, from most of my stemmed plants. Ugly white strands in tangled clumps ugh. What causes this and how do I minimize? I assume its due to nutrient deficiency in the substrate. I thought to ask first, before I put more root tabs in. TIA!
  6. died in the night 😔 Tankmates looking ok so far.
  7. Hey can anyone tell me what this poor little Ember Tetra is suffering from?Swollen white splotch. Labored breathing and obvious distress. I have him in quarantine. What should I do to keep his tank mates safe? And what if anything can be done for him? TIA!
  8. top is how i found my aquarium almost a year ago last March, out on the curb. 😯 bottom is now. 😀
  9. i really like my honey gouramis... colorful, peaceful and interesting behaviors. The one on the upper right in the picture is my favorite.
  10. When im not hatching bbs, my go to is Tetra flake food. Fish gobble it up and I used it when i was a kid. Whenever I open the jar, the smell brings back memories. 🙂
  11. Looking for recommendations for powdered food to keep on hand for unexpected fry. I have dwarf gouramis, and some other small fish, that breed but I can't keep the fry alive. In the absence of live foods, I think they just starve to death. I have tried Sera powdered fry food, but no luck. Thinking maybe freeze dried daphnia? TIA! 🙂
  12. Saw this aquarium in a book of 1920s homes. It is suspended in the window of a sunroom. Thought it was interesting.
  13. love this! I broke half my API tubes. 😖How are you stirring the solution? Did the tubes come with caps ?
  14. bonus features! Holds the bbs sieve while the tank drains, and holds the lid with heater / air hise while i rinse the tank. 🙂
  15. I got tired of clearing my standard sink drain strainer of plant leaves. This is the simple solution I came up with. Its a wire mesh desk organizer held above the sink bottom by a wooden stick. I dump my bucket of siphoned aquarium water into it, then knock the leaves it catches into the trash pail. Maybe this will help someone. 🙂
  16. Anyone here built their own tank from plexi? What’s involved? Seems like all ya need is plexi, a table saw and solvent. I’m considering building a custom tank and stand for a long, narrow space. What could go wrong? 🙃
  17. Looks solid, flat bottom will distribute the weight. I like the big cabinet it the middle because you can put some nice chunky vertical frames in the center section, to transfer weight to floor and prevent any sagging. If the dresser top isn’t perfectly level, adding the additional frame in the middle will solve this. Just based on photo, I’m thinking it would work.
  18. I have a similar dresser which i intend to use as an aquarium stand for a 75g. But i’m going to remove the drawers and put cabinet doors on the front. The reason for that is so I can fit a sump inside and brace all around, including behind the legs. I’m concerned that it may bow in front where the openings for drawers is a structural weakness.
  19. It depends on the furniture. Its difficult to advise over the web, without inspecting what you have, but if you have a solid piece of furniture, it may be sturdy enough on its own, or can be braced inside / behind with additional framing. Basically you want a flat surface to distribute the aquarium's weight evenly, and solid vertical framing to transfer the weight directly to the floor evenly. No overhang, no spindly legs, no wobble or bowing.
  20. sounds like an ideal spot. A bench for viewing may also double as a bench for changing shoes? Your other considerations are proximity to water source and drain. Also how to protect the floor from the inevitable drips.
  21. i think it would look great there! My only concern is that its a passageway area where people only glance at it. Perhaps you could add a seat or two for leisurely viewing. Tank should always be in a place where it can be seen and appreciated, the need to stay on top of maintenance is a plus not a minus! That way you and the fish get the most benefit. Also the dimensions should fit the space in proportion. Something big, about the same footprint as the cabinet would be perfect. A 10g would just look lost and sad.
  22. I dose every water change. Not sure if optimal for plants, but optimal for me not forgetting to dose!
