  1. Full disclaimer if they are eating and seem healthy i do the med trio and move on. Because of that this was a good opportunity with some decent comparisons between this puffer an the other pair. I am learning what works best for me as I go using the references on the website for @Preston John as my guide. In addition I am using my general understanding of how each med is working in my tanks and behavioral observations of the puffers. I plan on doing one treatment of expel-p a week for 4 cycles total then move to fenbendazole for 4 cycles as needed after that. levamisole seems to be really helping but id expect some worms are a given due to the foods involved. Seems to be feeling better after round 1 of expel-p though. Maybe a little too good :). A little bit aggressive in the QT ward tonight not really living the peaceful journey puffer life tonight. The right side is the puffer of this thread looking way better thsn day 1. The left puffer came same time and is just as fiesty. Considering the lack of a flinch left seems aware of the lighting diffuser abilities and no long tests it.
  2. In order to get better experience on the deworming I intentionally grabbed a less than healthy puffer from a seller who is more of a flow through than a QT and deworm online shop. Not only that I got this individual around Christmas during a colder spell with one more who appeared to be in better condition on arrival. This thread will be focused on the one puffer and how it progresses through deworming. The sale price back then was too good ( a gift from a family member ) and I took the jump knowing the risks. This could still end poorly for this puffer but so fsr so good. The goal was to get real world practice in deworming and conditioning as rough of a puffer as possible to prepare for a potential purchase of wild caught species without QT or deworming in the future. The condition of this one was as bad as I was personally comfortable trying with my current ability. Day of arrival Treatment with prazi pro (praziquantel) begins (I lost my scoop for my paracleanse and didnt want to guess). At some point this spotted congo lost the bottom fin to the muscle. Seems like possibly bitten off before arrival here. Day 9 - Progress made with praziquantel. Still a little more work to do before Expel-P (Levamisole Hydrochloride) Day 14 first day of Expel-P (Levamisole Hydrochloride). Id say we definately had some "expel of a P" in this gif. Day 16 2 days post 1st round of Expel-P (Levamisole Hydrochloride). We are one more round of Expel-P (Levamisole Hydrochloride) and then a round or two of fenbendazole to finish up the QT treatment here. Eating well and with that personality now. I expect this puffer will thrive and achieve the condition where the normal source send their fish to me by the end of the process. For comparison, this is the condition I recieved a pair from my normal source: More to follow as we progress
  3. I nominate @Beardedbillygoat1975 to this thread for suggesting I contribute a puffer article to amazonas. Pretty cool experience. I would have never considered contributing without that being suggested and encouraged to do so. Secondarily for living the red tailed puffer dream so I can copy that set up myself 🙂. Pretty much everyone else on this thread for the many many pieces of knowledge graciously passed since my arrival to the forum.
  4. He might answer you if you asked via email. He is pretty responsive to order followups might be the same for questions like this
  5. 1. For Amazon specifically, is there a "good brand" or a difference between brands for botanicals? I'm looking for 100+ pack of alder cones I havent ever tried their alder cones but I have done a few runs of driftwood from the lowest priced seller at the time without much concern and no issues when used. The unknown source could however unlikely risk pesticides but if you went with the intended for aquariums or shrimp that "should" be better. 2. I made a thread on it, but food, I really need to get some flake, leaning towards bug bites or discus granules. Everything is slightly more expensive not ordering from the Co-op but that's where the gift card is. Is there any issue feeding hikari discus food to normal community fish? Does anyone have experience with bottom dwellers and the fluval foods I have used both foods in a community tank within a rotation. I didnt notice any hesitstion on eating either. The sterbai corys and dwarf chain loaches here will eat bug bites ( shrimp, bottom dweller, and community formulas) off the bottom. That discus granule would probably not make it past the platys here. I would use it in a rotation and use it like a 3. Any ideas on hardscape, mopani or otherwise, rocks, is there a good place to get random bits? I really miss the WYSIWYG, but all I can seemingly find is lifeguard aquatics off Amazon as an option right now. Prices have gone up, what was cheap is now a $30 piece of mopani Id check LFS, landsape supply, greenhouses, for the hardscape. I have used houston manzanita before thats WYSIWYG he is a pretty good supply of specific pieces
  6. Got a quick picture of one of the adult hairys guarding his cave in spawning coloration with what is probably an infertile egg on 5he csve floor middle of the shot
  7. I'd assume its more of the pressure from the depth of the water risk than anything. When a flaw in the fusing of the panels at time of manufacturing occurs its a weakness in the structure of the tank. Any weakness could cause an acrylic seam failures / creep rupture in acrylic. Bubbles in the seam/failure to fully cure the seam are probably a major factor in acrylic tank failures If I had to guess. To me it is same mechanism of failure in glass tanks with silicone seams as it would be in acrylic. Rare but posible in both and if it ever happened its shop vac and damage control. Quality manufacturing, level stands and good maintence practices should mitigate risk in both ........ but i dont have a giant wet dry vac and a carpet cleaner for the great days.
  8. I wonder if that was the return water from the filtration room and the pumps were on a generator or something still pumping the cleaned salt water out that was still on the pump side of the system
  9. I had a 10-gallon break on me when filling it up due to a piece of metal under the base I did not notice. I was 12-14 ish at the time. Even 5 gallons is ridiculous amount of water to deal with on a floor. That giant wheeled shopvac from lowes is always close now and very handy for all sorts of things. I even have used that as my easy button to remove substrate on a full tank reset.
  10. @lefty oIf I did the reverse math on that right that would fill my entire house with 18' of water .... at least a 10 gal wet/dry vac 🙂
  11. Craziest thing about living above 9,000 feet is seeing flowing water from snow melt along the side of the road at -10⁰ farenheit. Thin atmosphere and full sun do some crazy things
  12. Water changes and fed the puffers. One of the Spotted congos had some tough decisions to make. Too many bladder snails to choose
  13. Ah bummer. Sorry to hear that @Theplatymaster. Ive been there a few times. When you get your next fry how would you adjust to avoid a repeat issue?
  14. I finally got my vetetan brokenness all pointed in the same direction and got the two 50 gallons on the rack upgrade. The shelves are 2x 1/2 plywood on top of the kobalt rack steel. 1/2" thick foam gym flooring smooth size up is the cushion. Getting the spacing right was a challenge but it seemz about perfect. 4 wild caught hairy puffers near tank. A herd of F1 mekong puffers far tank. The plan for the bottom is two 40 breeders already here and just waiting for this step to be completed . Not entirely sure who will go where yet. I expect the palustris adults will swap tanks with the 4 juvenile hairys and I will reorganize all tanks for easier observation and egg collection
  15. Those nano blocks are helping me with snails and livebearers (I think). Id grab those
  16. Thanks @TheSwissAquarist. Im not a meds expert but I normally do a water change first and would try the med that was most likely to solve the issue. Seem like your plan is what I would do i just follow the bottle dorections if I am actively treating. But again I am not an expert on the meds so i just go that route. If I feed during meds Iw will err on the side of caution and do light feedings. Meds can throw off my beneficial bacteria and its harder for me to maintain my water quality balance. It can swing quickly up here in the med situation and drastically swing if I am not careful. I am a bit more dilligent in monitoring water quality and puffer behaviors in both QT med situations as a result.
  17. Nice. Its a pretty good read for me even without an article on puffers. Their photos got me hooked
  18. @AllFishNoBrakes yeah it was fun just to see that i even scanned the included QR code function to my video 😁
  19. I got a few negative comments on my puffer coloniy videos on social media....from people who never kept a group of course. It is Positivity and encouragement here. Looking forward to your your updates
  20. what is a species of fish you have never kept, but would like to? Do you have a tank that makes sense for something like that? @nabokovfan87Never kept is a tough ask I get a little "seize the day" normally. The plecos are a goal for sure. I did get to see some Neon Borneo Sucker (Gastromyzon lepidogaster) in person those are pretty amazing and would be fun to breed. I have not done the false bottom hillstream setup before but could make a 40 breeder one or adapt my 43 breeder acrylic tank for breeding puffers into that tank. My thinking was an acrylic pedestal tray with a 3" lip and river rocks that fits into a 40 breeder or the acrulic tank, egg crate to allow flow down on the far end of the tank and 4 coop powerheads on spongefilters on the near end pushing water. The sponge uplift coming through a solid piece of acrylic with the powerhead sliding into the tube above that panel so it flows just above the rocks in the tray. ----------- That 2021 discovered Lentipes kijimuna goby would be pretty fun as well. Those colors are amazing. Maybe a 20 gallon there. ----- Still two more puffers that I know of curently... I am actively searching for a mixed group of the Carinotetraodon salivator Striped/Zebra Redeye. My Carinotetraodon irrubesco group is here because they are coll but also so I have my redeye process figured out by the time we find the salivators. 20 gallon project ----- Tetraodon duboisi is another one ive been keeping my eyes open for. I would like to get a group of those going and available as F1s some day. Rare a bit pricey small adult size and rumored to be aggressive. 40 gallon project
