  1. I really enjoy spectating the marine tanks that are kept by our planted-tank forum members!
  2. I have swapped sand caps for gravel caps in a few organic soil tanks for better substrate breathing. I ran extra HoBs to clear the water. It was messy, but squeezing out sponges into buckets was most of the work I did post-change.
  3. If you have stability, lots of plants, and are under-stocked, you can go a long time with just top-offs. I don’t think I have done a water change in over a year in any of my tanks, and several have never had a water change. This will not be an option for every kind of tank, but it works for my organic soil tanks. I only use lids for jumpers, so I am still introducing new water because of evaporation. I am also blessed with excellent water.
  4. @Jeff, that SF-500 model is symmetrical. I briefly used two in one tank because I was making changes in another tank. My indoor journal documents those aquariums.
  5. My cat brings live catches indoors. I have rescued three chipmunks and a bird, plus an unlucky bird this week. I can now catch a chipmunk in under 30 seconds with my bare hands. This is not a skill that I expected to develop.
  6. In this case, those are just my inserts to that post, because I like to create efficient text. I’m curious about the fit, foam, and tubing options.
  7. This looks cool. The product page indicates that it fits all but the Nano Sponge Filter tubes. I bet a forum Nerm will come up with an adapter. For going small, a pre-filter sponge might be the best match. Which of those fit?
  8. I still have all my AD&D books, and Dragon magazines. Does anyone here host online games? It has been so long!
  9. @Tihshho, my fingers went numb just reading about that.
  10. It looks interesting and harmless. I enjoy the random life in aquariums, if it doesn’t harm any inhabitants. In marine, I hate bristle worms.
  11. If you try to clean Blu-Rays after flooding, don’t use hot water, or you will just wash off the disc graphics. I went all-digital for books and movies after Irene.
  12. @Karen B., I underestimated bladder snails until they took over glass-cleaning duty. One less job for me.
  13. Snails are beneficial, especially those that come with plants. Embrace all the algae, bacteria, and biofilm that come with an aquatic ecosystem.
  14. @Atitagain, someone will reply with more chemistry details. The short answer is that if you have chlorine, and not chloramine, you can leave your water in another container for X amount of time, or Y amount of time with air/water flow, and it will be neutralized.
  15. I think my district relies on biological and mechanical filtration, and uses just a tiny amount of chlorine. The village just rebuilt the water and sewer networks, and my apartment is less than a mile from our treatment system.
  16. “Oops, you bred ‘em again!”
  17. I had to give my ailing Betta new water, so that was my test. I don’t want to speak for anyone else’s water.
  18. @Atitagain, I had something growing up that I didn’t appreciate until well into adulthood: excellent water. My folks had to drill a 400 foot deep well through limestone when they built their house in the mid 1970s. I was able to get away with 100% water changes when I didn’t know any better. The neighbors who built about ten years later, drilled a well and ended up with sulfur water. My apartment and tanks are in a different town. Recently, while treating my Betta, I did a test of my village water, and the Co-Op chlorine results were undetectable. I stopped using water conditioner over a year ago, when I learned that our water district does not use chloramine. I don’t even have to off-gas my water now. I feel very lucky!
  19. If you want a shrink, pico tanks are smaller.
  20. Cheers @Atitagain! I think folks really keep the kind and helpful ideals in mind when participating. Our hobby is about keeping things alive while we care for them, and that is true of the forum.
  21. Aquarium Co-Op plant bags allow full water-flow, so you could use them to hold your substrate-of-choice.
  22. @Kyle murfitt, we have a settings thread:
