Dward sag and easy carbon
Streetwise replied to Andy's Fish Den's topic in Plants, Algae, and Fertilizers
I would recommend spinning out the hair algae with chopsticks. It won’t hurt anything. I don’t keep your fish, but maybe you can find something hungry and compatible. I reduced window light with blackout curtains, and added SAEs. -
Dwarf sag spreads well in a good soil. I chose two crypts for my oldest-tank reboot.

@HydraSlayer, you may have posted an http image link, which won’t work on this https site. Just edit your first post and upload the image. -
What music are you listening to these days?

I tried planting with my tongs by dragging the roots in like boat anchors and then opening the tongs and pulling away to the side. I decided to plant the full clumps and not split them up. I still need more plants!

what state do you live in?
Streetwise replied to murphy lover 101's topic in Introductions & Greetings
Growing up in Vermont gave me so much appreciation for Lake Champlain and the Green Mountains. Visiting Massachusetts and Maine each summer gave me a love of tide pools. -
I think running organic soil helps with my stability. There is so much digestion and processing happening in the soil, plus all the live plants.

New plants came today. With the Co-Op notification, I used my lunch break to bring them inside: I also found out that I have Malaysian Trumpet Snails in my Askoll 20, after finding them at the top of the bucket from removing sand. I threw them back in, and added water to save more. Later, I took it to the next level: I rescued about twenty more MTS from the sand that I removed. I used my sifters to separate by size, and looked through what I found. Then I put the sand in the small bucket, dumped my sorted gravel into the big bucket, inverted the sifters, and ran some water through. Tomorrow, I will check for more snails.

@anewbie, I am over jungle val. I feel like it tries to out-compete my other plants.

Tank idea: Bottom lit, 'upside down' aquarium
Streetwise replied to James Croney's topic in General Discussion
I tried to buy a used 12 gallon long tank a couple of years ago. Surprise! It broke in shipment. Instead of a refund, I took an Apex leak detection kit, and a lunar simulator module. It tracks the moon cycle for your location and has white LEDs on a string. It is designed for reef tanks, but I don’t know the details. I couldn’t deal with it in my bedroom, but I moved my Apex downstairs, so I might try it again for fun.- 10 replies

@GameCzar, I would visit friends and cousins with those early game systems. I feel really lucky to have lived thru the acceleration of the internet and the web. I remember asking for an Ethernet connection for my dorm room in 1993 at CU Boulder, which got me a job. At some point, I got a DSL connection and played Quake 3 Arena on a PowerTower Pro 225 with a 3gfx video card, running Mac OS 9. We actually got really good ping and fps in those days. I played the Xbox port, and it was glorious!

I prefer gravel to sand for planted tanks, with organic soil.

You can drop in plants with a pot to stage, but I would plant without. You want full root spread when you decide to plant.

USB Nano Air Pumps deaths, teardown, and (apparent) fix
Streetwise replied to MarkM's topic in General Discussion
I want to try the new dual air pumps when they come back in stock. -
My folks wouldn’t buy me a video game system, but they did buy me a Macintosh SE/30. Almost all of my career has been based on being an Apple expert. Now I also do Google and various network technologies. However, my first purchase with a dishwashing paycheck was a Super Nintendo. I had a PS2, but I have been on Xbox since Halo and Splinter Cell. I finally got a Series X!

I was also joking, for the record!

@Torrey, there is some moss on the wood. I would like to try some that is more compact, and doesn’t Velcro with floating plants. @eatyourpeas, tempting!

@eatyourpeas, your tanks have more drama than a BBC series.

I am about to test a medium sponge pre-filter with the Aquarium Co-Op power head. This is a learning thread for aquarists helping turtles:
