  1. Kombucha culture for water filtration: https://arstechnica.com/science/2022/01/kombucha-cultures-make-excellent-sustainable-water-filters-study-finds/
  2. I want to try new shrimp. Maybe Sulawesi, maybe Caridina. I plan to add some Cryptocoryne Lucens, but I welcome other plant ideas.
  3. I run some no-tech tanks: tons of plants and productive soil are the keys.
  4. @xXInkedPhoenixX, @GameCzar, you can take silly risks in games. I drive a car in real life, but I also play Forza and DIRT. The latter two don’t show up on my insurance. I haven’t tried this aquarium game, but it might be a fun experiment.
  5. @Mmiller2001, I really think you could do more with this system than I have:
  6. I don’t have any additional treatment advice. I will just say that despite his or her size, my Yo-yo loach is my shyest fish.
  7. @Mmiller2001, I really enjoy seeing your progress. I do things differently, but you keep showing cool plants!
  8. Do you have have wood for this Yo-yo loach? Mine lives in the Mopani wood.
  9. Let me add some background. I setup this tank in 2019, and I had only skimmed the Diana Walstad book. I used a lot of soil, more than recommended. I started with a black sand cap, and then added some white sand for what I thought would be a cool look. It gradually mixed to look like digital camouflage. I added gravel to try to make it look better, but the cap depth just stalled all my plant growth. I had better growth in subsequent tanks, and I have been trying to move from sand to gravel with each newer tank. Why? Gravel allows the mulm to rejoin the soil. If I look at the side-view of some of my other tanks, I can see the layer that sand creates.
  10. @lindabee53, I am modifying my oldest organic soil tank. I moved all the fish and shrimp, staged the wood in a bucket, and pulled the jungle val. Then I removed about two gallons of sand. Tonight, I smoothed out the soil and added some gravel. I added water and an HoB, to go with the dual sponges. This should help clear up the water, so I can decide where to top-off the gravel. You are absolutely correct that I posted that photo to document how long it would take me to see the substrate!
  11. I loved studying science. It is so rare to be a part of it! Even answering no or n/a is valuable. The OP will share the results, although science takes time. @Guppysnail, I will pin this thread for a time. I should have done it sooner, but we really had no precedent.
  12. My condolences, @FrozenFins! I haven’t had any of my Bettas ever fully recover after a setback. You tried everything.
  13. I don’t gravel vacuum, and rarely change water. Fish like this and shrimp really benefit from a tank where the nutrients and snacks are left in the water.
  14. @Mydonkeyfish, do you have any browser extensions installed?
  15. Algae, biofilm, mulm, and wood all help!
  16. @Guppysnail, my arm looks like a ginger root with that angle!
