  1. JettsPapa, a question about copper. A few years ago, we had a very persistent ich outbreak and we used an assortment of "cures" for it (I don't remember what we used, but it was all stuff available at Walmart). Not sure if any contained copper and the water and filter media have been changed out many times since then (I think I also changed the substrate out since then)-before getting shrimp, should I treat with Cuprasorb as a precaution?
  2. Great information here! I want to put some shrimp (red cherry) in my 60 gal aquarium and have a couple of questions. My water is super hard-with a pH of around 8. Can shrimp be happy in that? Another question-do I need to quarantine shrimp before putting them in my big tank?
  3. I was just watching Irene's video on quarantine tanks and am curious how long it takes to develop a healthy colony of bacteria in a sponge filter after it's disinfected after use. In other words, if I put a clean sponge filter in my established aquarium today, how long until I can use it again in my quarantine tank?
  4. Just what I was looking for-thank you!!! Thank you so much for the detailed explanation-I just knew there was a better way 🙂
  5. I have 2 Fluval Canister filters-a 307 (for my 60 gal tank) and a 107 (for my 10 gallon tank) I've read a few posts where people say that they use "alternative" filter medias like polyfil and sponges in their filters and they say it is cheaper and more efficient than the brand name stuff. Can anyone tell me more about what they use instead of brand name media? Which things can be safely replaced with "cheap stuff" and which things should not be switched? The 307 isn't that bad, but the 107 has some different pads and things I'm not sure I need at all. The 107 came with 3 different types of "bio foam". See the photo for the available options.
  6. Sooo, could you medicate in a temporary holding tank (say a plastic bin with a sponge filter in it) and when the medication "week" is finished, put the fish in a cycled "quarantine" tank to complete the quarantine process?
  7. I messaged them a few weeks ago to see if they had Endlers and they said "not yet" but they answered right away and seemed very nice. Maplewood is a bit of a trek for me (from Buffalo), but eventually I'll probably go check it out.
  8. My quarantine tank water parameters are perfect (finally) so I'll be getting some new fish in a few weeks. My main tank is 60 gallons and I have just a few fish in it. I want to start off with either a small school of cories or some dwarf rainbowfish. My question is, if the fish come from a trustworthy local fish store, do I still need to do the quarantine medication trio routine or can I just watch them in quarantine for 4-6 weeks and see how they do?
  9. I learned to love hockey-I grew up in California (before they had hockey there)and when we moved to Minnesota, of course my kids had to learn to play community hockey and we went to MN North Star games (now the Wild). It was a great family activity (though kind of pricey) and we had a lot of fun with it. I haven't seen a game in a long time and I never did learn to ice skate myself......
  10. I recently got my first snail, so I am low on snail experience. I had some algae and folks said nerites were the best for cleaning, so that's what I got. this little guy (I hope) is amazing. He's been in my 10 gal tank for less than a week and he has completely cleared 2 walls of algae. And he's cute, too!
  11. When I was a kid we used to ride our bikes to the local "little store" (maybe a mile from home). For Halloween they always stocked big boxes of wax candy-lips, teeth, you name it. They were unwrapped in big open boxes that you could pick through and cost like 1-10 cents each. They were so good-you could chew the wax like chewing gum when you were done wearing them......(and no one died even though hordes of kids probably touched each piece with their grubby little hands)
  12. Is there anything I need to know? I have a 60 gal tank with gravel and artificial plants-I have about 8 really hardy fish-they've been through a lot-2 Rainbowfish, 3 tetras, 2 rasboras and a pleco.. I want to kick it up a notch. I just bought a beautiful piece of manzanita that will stretch about 2/3 of the way across the aquarium (I covered it with boiling water and now it's soaking-it's in a clean big garbage can). I have collected up some nice rocks-I got some slate pieces from Amazon and some petrified wood and assorted other rocks from my dad's collection (the rocks have all been scrubbed with a brush and are soaking) I'll check the rocks with some vinegar before I actually use them. My plan is that next week I'll do my 20% water change and gently put the driftwood and a few rocks into the tank (the fish will still be in it), add water to the top and see how it goes. A week or so after that, I'll order some live plants and add them. Is my timeline OK? I don't want to stress the fish out any more than I need to. Any suggestions are appreciated.
  13. How strange...anxious to see if anyone has any ideas about what could cause this.
  14. I'll have a plant order in a week or so (waiting for some driftwood to come) so maybe I'll just get some Coop ones and compare. I've read enough good things about the Mr Clean and generic ones that I should be satisfied, but it makes me nervous to be putting anything unusual into my tank....
  15. The Walmart website lists the only ingredient as Melamine, so I guess it's OK. I was only concerned because the package says that if you wash dishes with it to rinse thoroughly. Guess I need to look melamine up.....I did a little internet research and they sure sound safe to me. There were some rumors that they contain formaldehyde, but they are not true. Mr Clean says they are 100% non toxic....
  16. I’ve been reading that these pads work great for cleaning the inside glass but I want to make sure they are safe before I actually put one in my aquarium.
  17. I've been seeing photos of tanks that have unglazed clay flower pots positioned on their sides like "caves" in them. I want to give it a try-is there anything special I need to do or watch out for? I have some clean, unused pots soaking in a bucket of water right now-is that enough? Thanks!
  18. I just got my new light! I was worried about getting it set up but it was very easy. I had to turn the brightness down a bit-my fish are used to the crappy light that came with the aquarium 🙂 This may be a dumb question about the bluetooth-if I am out of town/out of range will my light still follow the program?
  19. Just FYI, I just saw a message on Facebook that SeaLevel aquarium shop (just closed in Hopkins last week) has found a new location in Minnetonka: 10928 Greenbrier Rd. They aren't exactly sure when they will reopen due to lots of remodeling and set up stuff, but at least they aren't closing for good 🙂
  20. Interesting-I had never heard of an AWC. I checked out a couple of videos on YouTube-how cool!
  21. So you don't need a male and a female to get eggs?
