  1. 60 gallons. I currently have 2 large rainbow fish and 8 inch and a half sized tetras and my pleco in there.
  2. Tomorrow is the day-I need some algae eater/bottom clean up type fish and a LFS somewhat close to me is reopening after they had to move. I'm not sure what all they will have in stock. If they don't have anything on my list, I can go to another fish store but it is farther away and it's cold outside 🙂 I have my quarantine tank ready to go and I have a list of potential candidates. I tried some shrimp but they became a smorgasbord for my rainbow fish. I have 3 nerite snails who keep my glass nice and clean and a pleco who isn't really all that neat-he just seems to poop a lot. My list includes dwarf/pygmy/panda Corydoras, kuhli loaches, otocinclus catfish (really my first choice), or dwarf chain loaches (I know they eat snails, but my snails are pretty good sized-would they be safe?) I'm planning to get a group of 6 of whatever I can find (just one variety). Any other suggestions? Any precautions about the medication trio with any of these fish? Thank you for any suggestions or little bits of information you can share with me. I forgot to add that my tank is a well cycled 60 gal planted aquarium with a gravel bottom.
  3. Since my Bacopa was spouting new growth, I did cut back the dead looking old stuff and planted the clump in the substrate. It looks great so far.
  4. So fun!!! I've had my shrimp for a couple months now-hopefully they will have babies some day. I had my doubts after my first shrimp became a rainbow fish smorgasbord. I put new shrimp in a separate tank and they are doing great. Actually, I was looking at my big tank (with the rainbow fish) this morning and saw a shrimp poking her head out from under the rocks. I suspected that there were a few left in there, but this is the first time I've actually seen one. Excuse the grungy corner-because I've suspected there might be shrimp left I don't vacuum that area very thoroughly. I had asked my grand daughter if she wanted my clown loaches (meaning some day) because I wanted to get some pygmy cories instead. She came and got them right away and I've been sorry ever since because I have lots more gunk in my tank without them. I think I'll be heading to the LFS in the next week or so to get a new "cleaning crew" (may start with some otocinclus...) ETA-I would love to move the shrimp from the "Rainbow Tank" to the smaller one, but I have no idea how to catch them....
  5. I bought a nice clump of bare root bacopa plants, I was busy, so when I brought it home I tossed it into my unlighted fishless quarantine tank....and forgot about it for 2 weeks (I love it when I wake up in the middle of the night thinking "OMG, did I....."). That was 2 weeks ago and the plant looked pretty sad. I floated it in my main tank with better lights in it and it still looks sad, though it looks like some new growth is starting to come out at the roots. I'm thinking I should cut off all the dead looking stuff (8 inches or so) and plant the roots with the new sprouts-is there any reason to not trim it back (do you think it might regrow?) Anyway, I'm really sad I did this, but at least it wasn't a fish.......
  6. I use a bandsaw to cut my plastic pieces as well-works great!
  7. None of my other fish even looked at it, either....
  8. Do you prefer zip ties to gluing them to the wood? Just curious 🙂
  9. I finally got around to trying Repashy. My shrimp love it but my plecostomus is absolutely nuts about it. If you haven't given it a try, I highly recommend it. Besides, it makes me smile feeding something called Soilent Green (I guess that dates me a bit.....)
  10. I have heaters in my tanks because I live in Minnesota where it gets really cold and I keep my furnace thermostat set at 63-65 degrees. I might be able to go without in the summertime, but I have my heaters set at 77-80 degrees F so they only turn on if the water temp drops below that.
  11. Mine is really original-it's just part of my very first email address (and yes I still use it). I've had it since I got my first real computer in 1995.
  12. My water was looking really cloudy. My old UV filter (Green Killing Machine) was hitting the point where I was going to need to replace the bulb and my 307 filter was acting up. The Fluval UV filter came first and made a huge difference and then when I switched to the new 407 filter a few days later, my water became crystal clear. So, I'm not sure which one had the biggest impact, but I'm happy with my system 🙂
  13. That's why I wanted to stick with the 07 series-I love the UV filter but don't think (not 100% sure) that it will work with the FX series.
  14. I love Fluval 07's as well-though I haven't ever tried any of the other cannister's. I recently went from 307 to 407-I think I read that the Fluval inline UV clarifier wouldn't work on the FX and I love my set up so I just stayed with the same series.
  15. I saw some photos of these in another forum and they really look great!
  16. I did this recently (swapped a smaller "on it's last leg" Fluval canister for a larger new one)-I used all the media from the old filter and added some new as well. I didn't notice any change in my water parameters (but I was really nervous about it for a few days). Now I have the older Fluval for "back up".
  17. I just got some Bacopa caroliniana. There are several species of Bacopa (Moneywort is another Bacopa) My water is very hard and alkaline and I have read that it should do great in my water so I just got some to try. I think both orf those are available from the Coop.
  18. I had no idea! Sounds like a great experiment! I'm not sure which type of deicer I have, but I know the calcium chloride is the most common. I'll try it in a bucket and see what happens 🙂.
  19. Something like this? It looks like most of them have a couple plug-ins as well as some USB type ports....https://www.amazon.com/dp/B082MDRC64/ref=sspa_dk_detail_2?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B082MDRC64&pd_rd_w=cffRC&pf_rd_p=54ed5474-54a8-4c7f-a88a-45f748d18166&pd_rd_wg=YAEI3&pf_rd_r=VX2AH15Q00K6G1ADV8CE&pd_rd_r=8134e8e4-2d41-4ebe-acb7-d62ba90c9617&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEzS0RNRVlaVUY3RzAmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTAwNjE2NTUzRFAwNVhEUkZFNzZCJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTAwMTYwNDIzODFZU0NIQzhCWjZDJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfZGV0YWlsX3RoZW1hdGljJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==
  20. Thank you-this is really helpful! Any idea how long a fully charged battery would work in this situation?
  21. I have a small solar set up at my cabin (it was my husband's project so I don't know very much about it)-would this inverter set up be similar to that? I do have all my batteries for the boat and campers-I think there are 6 total) home for the we winter (I keep them charged in my basement) so I have lots of car batteries available.
  22. Do you have Nerite snails? I've read that they leave white sesame seed like eggs all over. I've never actually seen them, but that's something that came to mind.
  23. Thank you so much!!!!! I'll look into one. I have a couple battery air pumps on order to try them out.....
  24. I looked but couldn't find any-even though I was sure this had been addressed at some point. I'll take another look...... Sorry, what is this? I've seen it mentioned in a few other posts... Thanks for the suggestions! I do have a ventless propane heater in my basement that I could bring upstairs if I needed to. I should make sure my propane tanks are full. I just gave all my husband's ice fishing stuff to my grandson-there was a nice little heater in the collection-maybe I should try to pick up couple to have "just in case". They heated our little ice fishing house nicely-if my living room (where my big aquarium is)was sealed off, I bet they might keep it warm along with the fireplace. Hopefully there's no power outage, but I like to have a plan....
