  1. It's beautiful!! How big is it?
  2. Good job-you are a fast thinker. I'm sorry this happened to you, but it reminds all of us that we need to have some sort of back up plan.
  3. OK, 50% water change done, added a bit more Prime and another big sponge filter from my other tank. We'll see how my numbers look in the morning.
  4. The HOB just has the Purigen packet in it-I was kind of grasping at straws last night so thought I would stick it in there.
  5. I've had my quarantine tank (10 Rubbermaid tub) set up for quite awhile, parameters have been stable. I have two seasoned sponge filters in the "tank" and I've been adding a pinch of fish food every day. I got some new fish on Saturday and I think I overloaded the quarantine tank because my parameters are now not OK. I did a 50 water change on Sunday (I stated seeing ammonia Sunday evening) and yesterday (Monday). I added a HOB filter and put a Purigen packet in it. I've been adding Prime and Stability according to package instructions. I just checked my water and I'm at Ammonia .5, Nitrite .25 and Nitrate 5. I'm assuming that even though the Prime "binds" the nitrite/nitrate, my test would still appear elevated? Anyway, my question is, should I do a 50% water change now and redose the Prime/Stability or wait until tomorrow AM and test again? I have Panda Cory's, Celestial Pearl Danios and Emerald Rasboras in the tank. There is also a big gob of Java Moss floating around in there with the fish.
  6. My fish love the Xtreme Krill Flakes as well. Bug Bites are also a favorite. I'm cooking up my first batch of baby brine shrimp right now-I just got some young nano-type fish (Celestial Pearl Danios and Emerald Rasboras). They are so small, I thought they might enjoy some baby brine shrimp.
  7. Roy, thank you so much for your excellent explanation-this is just what I wanted to know! Yes, I am in Minnesota. I missed that part of the meeting on Saturday-my granddaughter was with me and needed to leave. We stayed through the plant auction and so much great information about plants was shared. I really wanted to learn more about PAR meters. I will look into "checking" one out from MAS 🙂
  8. I was thinking of something you could use on the outside looking in…but yes, my phone would be OK to do a brief dunk. Not sure I want to test that out, though.
  9. Is there such a thing as a phone app that measures aquarium light? I know that there are PAR meter apps to measure non aquarium light for houseplants-would that be somewhat accurate for aquarium light? Yes I know that monitoring plant growth/algae levels is the best way to gauge light. I just think I would be a helpful tool to have. I don't want one badly enough to pay $200 for one, though.....
  10. I must be the most unconscious shrimp keeper ever-I look, but have never noticed females with "berries" but all of a sudden, I will find little tiny shrimplettes in my tank-they just appear 🙂
  11. That's a great video-thanks for sharing it!
  12. That's what I've been reading-that more fish in a larger tank is better. I will work on getting another tank set up eventually (since my hubby passed, I never use the livingroom so I might as well turn it into a fish room-my kids will think I'm crazy...."just one more", and then the salt water tank I want to add eventually......
  13. I was bidding on an online auction last night and there were some Celestial Pearl Danios up for bid and I decided on a whim that I wanted them for my small tank with cherry shrimp. I didn't know much about them except that they are nano tank fish and should be perfect. So, I have 5 of these guys that I'll be picking up on Saturday. This morning I've been researching them and am confused. Some sources say they will eat my cherry shrimp. Other sources say they are great tank mates for cherry shrimp. What do you all say-I have a couple of days to decide where I'm going to put these guys. I have 2 other options-my 60 gallon, where I think they will get lost (and be the smallest fish) or my granddaughter's community tank. Live and learn-research first (which, I already know, but sometimes we need a reminder....)
  14. I'm assuming that you have an iPhone? A .heic file is a photo thing Apple uses as a space saving format. If you want to change it to .jpg (the normal format most of us are used to), go the Settings>camera>Formats and choose "most compatible" which will let your phone save your photos in .jpeg mode. The phone camera won't let you take HDR photos in this mode, but if you want to take some, just change it back the "high efficiency" mode instead of the "most compatible" mode.
  15. How did you suck the air out of the regular Ziplock bags?
  16. Do you seal it up in little Food Saver bags, or how do you do it?
  17. I guess I never really thought of different tubings for different uses. Good question! That said, I use the Co-op tubing for everything I have (sponge filters, air stones and the like) I love it because it is so nice and flexible.
  18. @Mmiller2001 or anyone, I've been suspecting a potassium deficiency and would like to test. The thing is that I live in MN where everything is frozen solid and I'm always leary about buying liquid supplies during the winter. Any idea if freezing would harm the chemicals in the FE+ test kit?
  19. I did this a couple of weeks ago. It looks great! I put all the stuff I don't frequently use into a bin and shoved it into a nearby closet. Of course, now the closet is full, but I can find stuff in my fish supply cupboard. Good luck!
  20. When I first read this I thought it said "fish tank with a perch" and I was trying to figure out who was going to use the perch 🙂
