  1. Any way to have the person who is taking the tank ...take the substrate and rehome the snails? They will need substrate for it after all. Just trying to find a way of not killing them.
  2. You control the snail population easily with the amount of food you have for them to eat...the more food the more snails...the less food their number will fall in relation to their food source.
  3. I would think if the water is boiling heavily they would be killed instantly ....you would have to do it in batches depending on the pot size. SO yes a couple of hours...I know you are pressed for time. Bleach would kill of pretty much everything if its strong enough of a solution and allowed to soak overnight....You would be starting with a completely sanitized tank in the new place.
  4. I want to be a pea puffer because well ...who doesn't love puffers!!....also I love helicopters so its the closest in the fish world....could glide and hover and pivot around and snipe me some snails.
  5. How much gravel are we talking....how about boiling water...would kill them instantly. Just wondering why you are disposing of the gravel with the snails? Maybe you could do an outdoor pond with the gravel and have snails and some guppy grass floating....small fountain and it would look great all of less than 50 bucks. Just a thought.
  6. Im surprised nobody has figured this out yet....It was very evident to me. An alien came down mated with the wood in the tank and this is its offspring starting to form so they can grown in our atmosphere and take over the world....Duhhhh 😱
  7. @tonyjuliano I love your enthusiasm but I am literally going to burst your bubble. There is no way in hell you created an anoxic zone that fast. You said tank 2 was just set up today ….the bubbles you are seeing are trapped air from the substrate when you started to fill the tank. The reason I can say this with absolute certainty is I just set up a tank tonight and there are the same bubbles in the substrate. I believe that to create an anoxic situation takes time it would never happen that fast. I am thinking on the order of weeks minimum if not months. The pic I submitted is of a tank I set up 2 hours ago. The same White dots and my substrate is only about 2 inches deep.
  8. This is awesome...congratulations! I will be watching the progress eagerly!
  9. As I think of this more...I am still intrigued... @Brandy I am wondering if the only way to truly test the activity and effectiveness of the UGF as an anoxic denitrator would be to remove from the tank anything that would contribute to the removal of nitrates....eg...the plants. Of course that is purely just for scientific data for sure and wound not be fun to look at especially if you go to the lengths of making sure not even algae is growing which also serves as a nitrate sponge. But the idea does have sound theories behind it as I did a bunch of reading in waste water filtration and they use plants and anoxic filtration to treat water. I will be watching for the updates and it will be interesting to see the results no matter what they are. I applaud @tonyjulianofor having an idea and instead of just reading or having people tell him it wont or will work he is testing his theory. I have always learned as much from my failures, sometimes even more than when I have succeeded.
  10. @Andy's Fish DenYes yes they were definitely Zoo Med and you had to replace them every 6 months...LOL Oh they still lit up but you watched your plants basically stop growing and watched the algae start lol. Wow that brought back memories...lol The advent of Led Light fixtures and availability to lower the costs brought aquascaping to alot more people. When I worked and my LFS back in the day, alot of people loved looking at out planted display tank and wanted it until they found out how much the metal halide system we had on it cost and the amount of heat it generated but darn those plants looked great! My last fortey into live plants I used 4 pin Compact Flourescent bulbs....still pricy by todays standards but alot cheaper than the VHO's or Halides. Now its all Led that you can program to do anything you want except get me a cup of coffee....hmmm Maybe @Cory can make that feature into his lights...LOL
  11. Dont worry....I screwed the pooch much worse than that. Was using a liquid test kit (Wrongly BTW) and it kept showing zero nitrates so I just kept pumping away thinking I had a dud Bottle of easy green...well lo and behold once I figured out what I was doing wrong and tested it correctly my nitrates were well over 100. I had plants and snails.....I just let it go and sure enough the plants dropped them down in about a week and they grew like gangbusters. I did get a bloom of Brown Diatom algae but the snails took care of that promptly.
  12. Ahhh I completely understand and you are so right. Until you try how do you really know. Too bad we cannot measure the actual flow. I bet those numbers would be very surprising using the air stone and your cap on the short lift tube. Wil you be doing the plants with ferts and if so what kind and what will your schedule be?
  13. Again you have intrigued me further and will read up on DR. Kevin Novak. I am always interested in learning new theories and expand what I think I know...LOL I could see if the tank was much much larger that 1-2 gal per hour would be slow flow but in a 6 gallon tank maybe even 5 gallons when you factor in substrate and hardscape....at 2 gal per hour your sending 30-40 percent of total water volume thru the UGF. Do you feel that is slow enough to have anaerobic bacteria thrive to create the anoxic environment your seeking?
  14. Thank you @tonyjuliano I read your post...looking forward to your results.
  15. I am intrigued and will be watching this thread closely. I think your test coupled with the one I am proposing would shed a lot of light onto UGF used 2 different ways and see the results unfold in real time. Question....your theory is your setup will cause an anoxic environment under the plate but wouldn't having oxygenated water flowing even in as little as 1-2 gal per hours keep that from happening? The bubbles from the UGF would keep the water oxygenated. Back when the first "denitrators" came out 1990 ish they were run slower than 1-2 gal per hour otherwise we were not seeing any results. we had to slow the flow way down...literally we were counting drops per min entering the thing. The we started seeing some results. I am not an expert just explaining my experiences with anerobic/ anoxic filters. Again I am very intrigued by your setup and I hope it exceeds your expectations.
  16. @Jungle Fan and @Andy's Fish DenThank you for your experiences....amazing how they are completely the opposite of each other. While I will admit there could be alot of factors that could explain the differences...eg nutrients...lighting ect. Both of which has come a very long way as far as advancement. The led lighting today is some of the best for live plants and with @CoryEasy Green and root tabs fertilizing has never been well....easier...lol I think I would love to get a tank maybe a 20 gallon High with led lighting and use a UGF and see what what kind of results we can obtain with todays lighting and ferts. I would be willing to do a blog post of the entire "experiment" from setup to lighting to dosing schedules and amounts with pictures 2 times a week and keep everybody updated. I would love to hear from people what kinds of plants you would like to see me experiment on.
  17. Thats exactly what I was thinking....that the flow thru the gravel would cause the tabs to release and disperse way to fast. I assumed that the Easy green would be enough since it was being pulled down thru the roots. But always better to ask my fellow enthusiasts for some confirmation. @Brandy I actually was thinking of this as a long term go and your suggestions are very much appreciated and well thought. Thank you!
  18. Thank you....sorry if I messed things up!
  19. WOW this is funny...I too am thinking of doing a new tank with an UGF. Back in the day it was all we had and we managed to do very well with them. I am thinking with live plants it would have to be very beneficial to have constant nutrient rich water being passed over the roots. The only thing I am not sure of is whether or not to use root tabs?!? @Cory what are your thoughts on UGF with live plants and the use of root tabs?
  20. @ChefConfitI agree with the skewing statement but try being the person who read all of the negative reviews and still ordered one and it failed. That is when you see the comments that say..."I should have listened to the reviews" I will say that I chose to hold off long before I was a member here and now having access to a lot better information is making me rethink about trying one. Of course if it blows apart....Im blaming you...🤣 Just kidding!
  21. remove bulkhead...paint blue....reinstall bulkhead....cap bulkhead.....sit back and enjoy.
  22. @Daniel I love the size of the 40 breeder and want 10 of them for my fish room. I just got a little worried when i started reading all of the leaking horror stories. I know that for every one that has a problem there are probably hundreds more that dont but it still stuck in my mind a bit. Maybe I should get one and give it a try and build up my confidence in it.
  23. When I was looking for 40 breeders...I went to the petco website and was reading about them and there were tons of 1 star reviews for the tank leaking. Enough reviews that I didnt buy any even though they were 50.00 each. I just dont think I would handle it very well to come home to 40 gallons of water on the floor and everything dead. I guess Ill have to pay more for peace of mind.
  24. Awww Im sorry....when you find some let me know...I want them too!!
  25. Welcome fellow Floridian.....what part of Florida are you from....Im in Fort Lauderdale. Your tanks are just incredible...you have a Bumble Bee Nerite...I am jealous...LOL Welcome to the group!
