  1. Here is one of my Apistogramma nijsseni females: She has lipstick on 🙂, that's not weird right?
  2. It is Cepaea nemoralis, otherwise known as a 'grove snail'. It is native to Europe but has been introduced to North America and yes, it is terrestrial.
  3. They look like some type of annelid worms, perhaps a sort of tubifex?
  4. This most excellent journal by @Fish Folk is a good place to start:
  5. Since this is forum anniversary week might I recommend this product from 1 year ago as a good battery back up for your USB nano pump. This is one of the first posts from the first day!
  6. Not a battery: This converts household AC electricity into DC for whatever you plug into its USB port.
  7. At first the forum was pretty basic, no topic photos, no themes, very plain! And there was even no disease forum. That didn't come until the 3rd day and this was the first post: Where would @Colu* be now if we didn't have the "Disease" forum? 🙂
  8. Probably the best, most useful diy project ever on the CARE forum. The Pex-Pillar! And only $10...
  9. On the first day of the forum @Bill Smith set the standard for a good post: Next was an actual experiment: A themed (Star Wars) decor project: The nicest brine shrimp hatchery project ever! And that was just the first week of the forum. With content like this, no wonder the forum's popularity started to boom. As July kicked and summer heated up Bill started one the best documented summer tubbing project so far: The thing I respect about Bill's projects are how honest they are. When something doesn't work, he show's it warts and all. When you read his posts you really come away knowing what works and what doesn't, all from actual experience documented in real time. But instead of resting on his laurels, Bill still had an ace up his sleeve. Coming up next, the fabulous Pex-Pillar!
  10. The first great articles on the Forum started on the first day. Coming up next....the rise and fall of @Bill Smith 🙂
  11. I have kept Vallisneria americana in my high temperature discus tanks in the past. But I do have report the Val in my current discus has failed to take off so far. It does that sometimes.
  12. 13. I was thinking 'probably', cause I didn't know how much bleach would be left, but that just didn't sound strong enough so I went with 'exactly'. In retrospect 'probably' might have been more accurate/🙂
  14. The first member to join on that first day, July 14, was Ginger Graves She got reactions from Cory and Irene when she made her first post.
  15. The forum opened to members on July 14, 2021. But before a week before that, Cory and small crew were testing and building content. I am pretty sure this was the first post, and of course it was Memes! You can tell this was a really early post, because you could give still Cory reactions So that one above from Kevin Green is half of all of Cory's reactions.
  16. I think you are referring to Sera O-Nip tabs. I bet they are available in Ireland as I think they are a German product.
  17. Sure, why not. If I were trying this now, I would do a few with a root promoter like Clonex Rooting Gel to see if it upped my success rate. I haven't tried this on banana plants before (just terrestrial plants), but I think it is worth a try.
  18. I think any long time member of this forum will be surprised by this, but my favorite native is the pygmy sunfish. Here is an example of some of the current one's I am keeping (Elassoma gilberti).
  19. Many of our fishkeeping orthodoxies are not really that useful. What can be useful is thinking differently or at least asking why a lot of times. I agree with many of his points above and think he should a least get credit for challenging current belief. On the other hand some rules really are true as I have found out the hard way. 🙂
  20. In my big aquarium at least a couple of individual rocks are over 150 lbs each and are sitting directly on the bottom while others are on the sand substrate. The tank has been running this way since 2007 with no issues.
  21. Before I setup my big tank, I bred discus in 55 gallons aquariums. Nothing special about 55 gallons tanks, it just what I had. After I got my big tank I used that for discus breeding. Eventually I didn't have discus in the big tank for almost 8 years until I acquired a batch last year. Right now there are 5 breeding pairs in the big tank, but that means the fry never grow up because of the heavy predatory pressure from other adult discus. I will probably thin the adults out (maybe to just 1 pair) so that I can watch the fry growth up. When there were angelfish in the aquarium, I could get fry to grow up even when there were 3 breeding pairs angelfish all breeding at the same time.
  22. My experience with discus color patterns is limited, but what I found is that you get a spectrum of patterns with each end being one of the parents. Most offspring are never as spectacular as their parent (a few are). Once you get going you can crank out hundreds or even thousand of baby discus, so eventually the issue is culling. It doesn't take long to flood the market. There isn't an issue when breeding two discus from the same fixed strain. When I was breeding Jack Wattley cobalt blues, 100% of the offspring were nice cobalt blues. Because of the beauty of watching the discus parents shepherd a school of babies around and trade the school back and forth as the babies feed, they are still my favorite fish to breed and watch.
