  1. Hi Bev! I use powdered eggshells too. At first I put them in the tank, but it was messier than I would prefer and some floated. Then I watched 2 videos and created a Snello based on these videos I found. Simply Betta video Lav's Snails video I kind of came up with my own concoction based on stuff I already had. It ended up being something like: can of green beans (no salt) and boiled veggie scraps, blended to puree some random fish food powdered eggshell knox gelatin, prepared with boiling water They love it, and no eggshell mess. It lasts a long time! I keep it in the freezer; I tried to freeze it in a ziplock, but tried to make sure the cubes didn't touch each other. That way it is easier to take one cube out at a time. My last post has photos of this food in their dish. It kind of melts, but it does stay in one spot. If you ever have to remove extra it can be sucked out with a turkey baster. But my crew usually does not leave any leftovers. Do you have a photo of these babies? 🙂 I will try that! Makes my life easier!
  2. Funny, I thought I was making a fish frenzy video, but most of them were too dumb to figure out it was food. 🙄 Good thing I have a great cleanup crew. It was a great day for them. 🐌
  3. I seem to remember trying to shorten the tube, but the mid strainer is wider than the two tubes it connects. Those two tubes are the same diameter (well, they are rectangular actually, but whatev) - and they don't fit together. I guess where the mid strainer is, perhaps I can put the intake w/ PFS up there? It sure would make maintenance easier, and I have a co op sponge filter on the bottom for any of that low-floating debris. I might have to finagle the spiderwood too, because there is this scraggly branch that likes to sit near that area where the mid strainer is. I am limited to driftwood position though because I have these cool java fern roots in the front of the tank, and I like 'em there. I think it's peaceful to watch them swaying in the current, and the ram likes to go in and out of them. When I trialed the aquaclear, I liked how that tube was set up. Intake basket was integrated into the tube, and then if you want to go longer, you just add another tube/basket combo right on top of the other one. Too bad it dry runs if power outage though. Shame on you, AquaClear.
  4. The Repashy pot made such a mess. Cory says it’s tank stable though, meaning it won’t mess with parameters. I cleaned my filters and water changed this morning before all this. 🙄 I pulled the pot out after about an hour and the gang lost interest. C-3PO hung on the edge as I was pulling it and had to be detached. He was the biggest fan, it seems. I’m not going to dip decorations again. I scraped off the food and made more squares out of it; popped them in the freezer. They can go in a snail dish later at some point.
  5. No worries. Was he pale since you got him or has he become pale just recently?
  6. Catfish? 🤣 All I could think of was that movie Pet Sematary. & Gage coming back as super evil with a manipulative cuteness to match. OMG 😬
  7. Happens to all of us! Some things you can do to speed it up are to use some filter media, decor, and/or substrate from an established tank. Or you can use bacteria in a bottle. I like Fritz Zyme 7.
  8. I got away with boiling river rock. 🙂 Fool's gold! Makes sense! Thank you so much @RockMongler. What a great post.
  9. Clogging is the only problem I'm aware of. Too high of a flow creating big bubbles that come out of the sponge instead of the lift tube is also something that can cause an issue, although I doubt that would result in no suction.
  10. I made some community Repashy cubes and some yummy decorations. I will see who likes it later today. I threw a scrap of it in last night -the edge leftover from cutting. Somebody quality tested it. Chomp chomp
  11. Mine are detritus worms. They don't stick, but they bury in the substrate and they sometimes wriggle when they are disturbed (ie: during tank maintenance). If you have ones that stick to the glass, they could be planaria or another type.
  12. Hmm. What about the plastic slats inside the sponge? Are they clogged? Let's see if @nabokovfan87 has any ideas. He's very good with filtration issues.
  13. Many plants are grown partially out of water, and when they are submerged they can go through a melting process. That's normal for new plants. You'll want to just trim off dead stuff but leave the healthier leaves and the roots and the plants should spring back. Also plants LOVE ammonia! They use it as a food source.
  14. Starting with the ammonia question, this video is so good at breaking down what is happening with water chemistry in new tanks Driftwood and leaves help lower pH. Don't worry about the pH yet. Focus on getting through the nitrogen cycle and then you can work on pH. If you try to work on it now and end up doing water changes, the pH is going to go back up with the addition of tap water back to the tank.
  15. Is the top cap secure? Meaning, can you pick up the sponge filter by the airline tubing and it stays together?
  16. That's a nice school size. He should be ok with his tankmates. Is he a new fish or have you had him for awhile?
  17. Indeed, in body shape. The fish looks washed out in color. Looks like a cardinal, but pale. Watch behavior. If he’s the runt, he may very well get picked on. ESPECIALLY watch him at mealtime. Is he being out competed for food or nipped by the others? It’s easy to miss when there’s a lot of activity. I’ve found they have a pecking order. I don’t believe it’s a sunken belly (illness), but it could be hunger. Also, how many tetra are in your school?
