  1. I am sorry for your loss. 😞 There are a lot of great Betta keepers here. Maybe in another thread you want to review your setup just to make sure there wasn't something overlooked. Unfortunately Betta fish can be some of the most fragile in the hobby depending on what the fish went through prior to your own care, genetics, food, etc. "It happens," but I am right there with you in the mindset of it's very unfortunate that it does. My condolences and keep your head up. All you can do is the things in your own control. Maybe April's aquarium has some things you can have on hand for future use.
  2. I have mine on "fine" not really a course size or anything, but you should be able to just leave the stones as is (make sure not too tight) and then turn up the air pressure (output).
  3. I'm too excited! I was trying to give people some time to see the thread and what not. FIRST UP We have a "birthday selection" of sorts for myself. The original plan was to start in September, my birthday month, but all is well. Let's kick this shindig off! I will also link a specific article for your enjoyment whenever you would like to watch. Ultimately, this is someone I had never heard of and her (and her husband's) impact on the shark as we know it as a thing in every day culture is profound. There is a constant theme of love and respect for people who swim with sharks. I cannot help but feel that sense when watching this film. Please enjoy. Streaming Platform: Disney+ (National Geographic) Rating: TV-PG Parent's Guide: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt11226258/parentalguide?ref_=tt_stry_pg
  4. Maybe upload one as "unlisted" and post it somewhere to get feedback? Honestly, you're a wealth of knowledge and it's a side of the hobby many (meaning no one) has any real quality guides on. I think you'd be a lot like Rachel O'Leary in content style, profiles, and just interesting things. I mean that as a sincere compliment as her videos were extremely informative on fine details. Just turn off comments then....
  5. do you happen to have mini nerites at all? Very interesting, I've never seen this before. Learned something new today!
  6. In my case (we might actually be from the same area) there is a bit of a "if you don't keep on top of it you're going to crash" when it comes to KH. Mine is 3-4 on any given day. Higher stock on the tanks, waiting to do water changes, all of those organics bind with the KH molecules and that leads to KH and PH crashing. https://www.aquariumcoop.com/blogs/aquarium/ph-gh-kh In my case, I have some seachem alkalinity buffer on hand (there's some common kitchen items that people recommend, but I just don't know what they are off-hand) and those can be used in the same way. Try to get your KH to stay above 4, keep on top of water changes, no big deal. It's just the type of thing where I highly recommend having a GH and KH liquid test kit on hand for monthly checks just for your own sanity and keeping track of how things change over time. To be fair, I believe you already have one, but just want to mention it. More organics in the water, waste and other things, uses up the KH, that causes PH to drop. My tap is ~6.8 and can easily drop to 6.0 if I'm not careful. I keep the tanks light, still something I battle with, but it's extremely manageable.
  7. There's a few research studies on the topic. Application is everything. I don't (and likely won't) ever run a tank with only sponge. Even in a QT setup, having some bio rings on the bottom is helpful for me.
  8. The only thing I would adjust is push more air on the sponges. The one on the left especially. My sponges look a bit like your airstones do 😂 I am excited for you. I can't wait to see how much enjoyment you and those around you get from this tank!
  9. She looks a bit like a Judy (ref. to Dorothy)! Prism also seems pretty fitting also. 🙂
  10. simply betta has some good stuff. She does get into a bit of the "nitty gritty" in some videos. Creative Petkeeping as well has some good content on bettas with respect to fine details. Both of them would recommend..... https://www.youtube.com/@Skylrrider Biotopia is an interesting channel to follow for general information on natural habitats. Jimmy mentioned a betta keeper who sent him fish from his home country, which may also be of interest. https://www.youtube.com/user/kyleledotnet This is another betta channel with wild species and information on them. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCv0rLo7OwyLsd-LEGQ6o_iQ @Biotope Biologist what do you recommend for learning about small critters!? (apart from your journal of awesome things. 🙂
  11. Reminds me so much of @JimmyGimbal's setup.
  12. Sometimes they swim around due to the new oxygenation water. It encourages breeding a lot of the time. But yes, I definitely keep an eye out for the stress signs. I don't seem to have any with this line. They hardly even notice it most times. The new food went in today. In about an hour or so I peeked back in and I love what I am seeing. The adults are on the food and the smaller particles are expanding outward in the dish and on the sand surface for the baby shrimp. The food is breaking down nicely and it was just fun to see them do their thing. so far so good.
  13. Minimum 40! 🙂 It sounds awesome. Maybe some dither / tetra for the discus if anything. Considering the temps though, Sterbai over discus for this case. See! That's cool though. All you enjoyment, time, energy into that one setup. I still don't know how you don't have a bunch of content on youtube or a blog or something. You always seem to be doing interesting day-to-day things and it's fun to see the projects and slow progress. @mountaintoppufferkeeper is the same way. Too much awesome little work going on and it's always enjoyable when you let us have a peek at what's going on. The tank setup looks great. I think corydoras or plecos, both will enjoy the bottom setup. The branches over the surface like that and they can peek up with a bit of cover. Well done.
  14. The ß-glucans from what I've found is your "bacter AE" of sorts. It's the probiotic in the food. The montmorillonite is the calcium / clay supplement. The turmeric and cinnamon and pollen being the other things I really like. The same food they have a lot of versions. One I'd like is the stinging nettle food and I found another that is just the pelletized mulberry leaves. Interesting stuff to use and try to make it easier for the shrimp to get what the need. Yeah. MST has always done pretty high flow through airline. Drip acclimation but not as slow for the neos on his water change vids. I use the buckets and I can absolutely see the damage from water going back in there too fast. I've use a catch cup, small pumps might work well too, but the main tools to diffuse the output that were successful is just my hand and Styrofoam. Last water change was 50%. Two buckets matched to temp and added back in. (I won't say the words out of trying to jinx it but) it's been going ok for a while. I need to make a request post in experiments for my shrimp stuff and trying to put together all of the research papers into a care technique for neocaridina.
  15. I'll get some photos in person, but here's a quick side by side. The new food on the left. As long as the shrimp do enjoy it, it'll end up being the day to day food for me. Here's why.... Old food: Ingredients: Grain Products, Animal Protein Products of Marine Origins, Plant Protein Products, Processed Grain By-Products, Soy Lecithin, Limestone Ground, Fish Oil, Dicalcium Phosphate, Calcium Propionate (preservative), Manganese Proteinate, Zinc Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, Calcium Iodate, Iron Proteinate, Cobalt Proteinate, Calcium Carbonate, Sodium Selenite, dl-Methionine, Vitamin A Acetate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, dl-Alpha Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E Supplement), Vitamin B-12 Supplement, Riboflavin-5 Phosphate, Niacin d-Calcium Pantothenate, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (source of Vitamin K Activity), Folic Acid, Thiamine Mononitrate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Biotin, L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate (source of Vitamin C), Zinc Oxide, Ethoxyquin We replaced probiotics with Vitality Pak, an all-natural, nutritional feed supplement, designed to improve overall fish health and resistance to disease. New food: Composition: kelp, insect proteins, dandelion, stinging nettle, spinach, mulberry leaves, chlorella, montmorillonite, moringaoleifera, rosemary, mannanoligosaccarides, ß-glucans, flower pollen, turmeric, cinnamon We'll see how they do with it tomorrow. 🙂 ......and of course the little piece I fed today the amano shrimp immediately took and doesn't want to share. Silly Gojira. 😂
  16. @Odd Duck I'm not sure if this is a candidate for acid wash to remove some of the minerals? It would definitely impact the stone structurally, but I am pretty sure it'll be impossible to find a before/after on this one.
  17. Some have more "platy" in them and get pretty big. Fish size is a pretty big misnomer because not everyone uses the same scale and location. I have seen some that are... 3-4" and the ones I have now max size is a lot closed to ~2 inches for males, 3 for females. Each line is going to be unique and there are different strains for the same coloration. A lot of times, breeders will push the size while others will push the coloration. I tend to think the "standard" measurement is the one we tend to reference for "max size".
  18. I think it's called samurai rock / samurai stone. It looks a lot like maple leaf rock too, but not quite the same structure. Samurai rock:
  19. Looks beautiful! Welcome to the forums. I dig the pattern on the fish you've selected. 🙂
  20. I probably wouldn’t stress too much, but again I would test it. There’s people much smarter than myself when it comes to tank construction and how they’re supported. Tagging @nabokovfan87 to see what they think. It would probably be preferred to not No issue. You just need the corners supported. You can see the same type of thing in the video for Cory / Corvus building the shop racks. It's up to you. I can't really say. It seems from everything it's ok. It's definitely out of warranty.
  21. As long as you’re able to to say, “yup, holds water and doesn’t leak”. Outside would definitely work Yeah, definitely outside. I had my 75 sitting for months. Took it outside to fill it on the concrete and what do ya know even the concrete pad can't be level at this house. 😂 What you're looking for is to be able to fill it. If you need to, take an actual level to the ground or use a garage or something where it's definitely level and not sloped to run away from the foundation. Left to right (one direction) of lean is usually ok but it's just not something where a tank this old you'd want to risk added stress. no arcing or bowing basically. I would fill it for at least a week as long as the ground isn't causing any stress and temperature isn't an issue. 14 days is a better test. You want to at minimum have it filled up long enough for the ground to dry completely and then to have the tank hold water "long enough" to feel comfortable. Check the silicone visually, that's going to matter a lot more than any test. It should be attached to the glass as well as be supple. If it dried out and it's hard/cracking then you're going to want to just replace it anyways. A new 20L costs about $26 or so. Just saying....
  22. You can fill the void with soil also.
  23. The only equivalent I can imagine.... Potentially the origin of the story is the little crystals that form at the bottom of old bottles of dechlorinator. I don't think that is aloe chunks in any shape or form and I don't see that same sort of crystalline structure like I see in old bottles of dechlor.
