  1. Ok I will try to cut back on feeding. Lighting cant be adjusted but I will try putting a bit of electrical tape on it to decrease the intensity a bit. There are a ton of floating plants in this tank so I'm a bit surprised I'm having so much algae issues. I assumed the floaters would manage the excess nutrients and the excess light. The horned nerites seem to be doing a good job on the wood, rock and glass but I am most annoyed by the algae on the hygrophila and crypt parva. It doesn't look nice and its starting to harm the plants and difficult to clean off. I will try using some more hydrogen peroxide. For this type of algae would otocinclus or an amano shrimp be the better option? If otos I would just put a pair in this 5g, let them clean it up and then rehome them to a larger tank.
  2. There is definitely a bit of hair algae around but none of this is diatom? It is a 5g Aquatop Pisces. A few CPD and blue diamond neocaridinia and sone horned nerite snails. Light came with the kit, seems fairly strong, only have it on 6hrs per day. I feed the fish twice a day. They are somewhat picky, eat only food floating mid-water so I generally slowly sprinkle in small amounts over a few minutes until they seem less interested. pH 7.4 Ammonia 0 Nitrite 0 Nitrate 10 Kh 4 Gh 9 TDS 300
  3. Looks like a Bucephalandra, maybe Bucephalandra kedagang.
  4. Had diatoms for a while in this tank, am I still dealing with them? Taking on more of a greenish colour now so I'm not sure if this is something else. Please let me know what this is and if nerites, amanos or otos are my best defense!
  5. Thanks for the reply! I do have a chemistry background so I follow what you are saying. However just to clarify - this happened over the course of a week (KH from 4->0), is this typically what you observe? I do not normally have a source of CaCO3 in the tank but I do ~weekly water changes so my KH usually matches my tap water. I'm unclear on why this would happen so suddenly.
  6. I have a heavily stocked, moderately well planted 20 gallon tank. It is filled with guppies, 1 hillstream loach, 1 dwarf gourami and some amanos. This tank is 5 years old and quite stable. Typically parameters look like: pH 7.4 GH 8 KH 4 Ammonia 0 Nitrite 0 Nitrate 40-70ppm I just came back from vacation and wanted to see how the nitrates were looking as that is the parameter I am usually chasing with water changes. To my surprise my pH and KH have both crashed. Current parameters are: pH 6.5 GH 11 KH 0 Ammonia 0 Nitrite 0 Nitrate 65ppm I have no idea what has happened. Fish from what I can tell all look fine. Some plants are looking not great but not sure if related: crypt wendtii with a bunch of pale yellow leaves, java fern and anubius have multiple leaves with holes with black edges around them. I had our pet sitter add a pinch of my usual flake food every day while I was gone. Quite possible she overfed as she completely fouled up my other tank. The only other thing I did differently was add a Zoo Med Nano block for my amano shrimp. I would assume the nano block would have had the opposite effect on my KH/pH though. In case it is relevant I also have a small bag of API Nitra-Zorb in the filter to help control the nitrates but I have been running this on and off for months. I did recharge the bag right before I left. Any ideas why this could have happened? Also how do I deal with this? Water change seems obvious but do I have to do so cautiously to avoid a pH shock to the fish? Any advice appreciated!!
  7. Oh interesting. Yes the underside of some leaves are red/purple which I see is characteristic of this species. Was actually wondering if they were red root floaters. Mine definitely don't have prominent stems. Thanks!
  8. Repeat treatment with Expel-P complete. To recap, tank has had 3 doses Kanaplex, 2 doses Expel-P (one week apart). Hard to say for sure as I see her every day but I think she has improved slightly? Colour is definitely better, she is almost as vibrant as the other CPDs in the tank. I think much of the colour improvement can be attributed to maturing over the past few weeks as she was only a juvenile when I got her. Fins are still clamped and swimming still looks a it odd to me but I think has improved. She still has an appetite and feeds regularly though it looks to me like she has a sunken belly (which is surprising based on how much I see her eat). I have attached some photos from today. Please let me know if there is anything else I should try or just wait and see at this point.
  9. Sorry missed this advice, no I did not do any salt treatment as I have a planted tank. Unfortunately I do not have space or equipment to quarantine at the moment.
  10. These floaters were hitchhikers with a previous plant purchase though I'm not sure what they are. I believe the small one is duckweed but not sure about the larger variety. Can anyone help identify? Thanks!
  11. I don't see any pale areas on the fish. Overall, colour is very close to the other fish in the tank - maybe slightly more pale. Completed one course each of Kanaplex and Expel-P. I'd say overall the fish looks a bit better but still has clamped fins and shimmies a bit while swimming. Wait and see at this point? Any additional treatment? Thanks for your advice.
  12. Kanaplex treatment is done. Colour looks ok, still a bit more pale/milky look compared to other fish but better than when she first got sick. Still has clamped fins and still spending almost all her time swimming against the filter outflow. However she has a strong appetite and always comes out to the front of the tank with the other CPDs when I come to feed. Seems to have a bit of trouble swimming, especially down. Here is a video of her feeding a few minutes ago. Should I just proceed with Expel-P today as originally planned? https://youtu.be/O4-nFVHUEzk
  13. I don't really have a way to isolate, unfortunately. All other fish look fine.
  14. Day 4 of Kanaplex (two doses administered, last due tomorrow). Colour is looking a bit better. However she seems to be having a bit of difficulty swimming. I wonder if she has developed a swim bladder issue? Often resting on about a 45º angle, nose down tail up. Shimmying a bit when swimming. I will link a video below. Please let me know if this changes treatment plans at all.
  15. Thanks! Just to clarify - do you consider a course of kanaplex to be 1 dose every other day x3 doses total?
