  1. I just wanted to come by and update this post with a few tweaks I made to make my system work more reliably. First, I’m using about half as much yeast as I was in the beginning. Maybe 20 granules. I realized it didn’t take much at all, and using too much could be counterproductive. I also learned a few things from looking into the way labs culture paramecium for studies. One thing I learned is that paramecium tend to congregate on edges. So be sure to swirl your culture before pipetting some out! Another thing I learned is that you ideally want to split your culture before it hits peak population density. From what I could tell, for my setup this meant splitting the culture around the 48 hour mark. This also has the benefit of slowly reducing the chance that any predators, like cyclops, survive in your culture because they can’t reproduce within a 48 hour window. Because this method produces a fairly clean culture, I tended to feed my fry a LOT of it at once. If I ever have a large number of tiny fry, I think I’ll have to use bigger jars. 😄

  3. @xXInkedPhoenixX for sure. Last time we ran events across the whole week, so this year it would be July 10-16. You’re free to pick deadlines on submitting/voting any time within that week or even before it. When you post, just make sure to use the tags “Nerm Week” and “Nerm Week 2022”. I should post our event list soon, too! Any last things to add? I’m thinking about the design contest that I’m running, and I’m wondering if a straight-up design challenge would be too similar to what people do here every day: help other people out with their problems. What do you all think of doing a silly version where the challenge is to over-engineer a solution that’s totally impractical but would actually work? Like a Rube Goldberg contest, aquarium-style?
  4. Same except my husband also does the cooking! 😅😅
  5. Right now here’s what we have confirmed: Aquascaping competitions: @FlyingFishKeeper Problem-solving design challenge: @Hobbit Dream fish room design contest: @xXInkedPhoenixX Taco eating contest: @TheDukeAnumber1
  6. I unplug my powerhead when feeding my main tank. I like that it signals to the fish that it’s feeding time, and of course it keeps the food from blowing around. I also like to leave the powerhead off for an hour or so just to give the fish a different environment to swim in. I frequently forget to plug it back in, BUT I have an air stone running at all times so it’s never a disaster. My tank is also very lightly stocked so it doesn’t solely depend on the filter for processing ammonia. The filter’s mostly there for mechanical filtration.
  7. @xXInkedPhoenixX oooo that sounds amazing! (And dangerous for our spouses 😆) I would say keep it all in one thread, and just be clear that voting should be based on the design rather than the fancy-ness of the presentation. What a fun idea!
  8. Sounds good @FlyingFishKeeper! I’d be happy to organize things again. And yes, I think so far we’re the only two committed to running something. It sounds like we have a lot of interest, though! @Torrey bwahaha 🤣 I love it!! Would you like to post/host that thread during NERM week? @Beardedbillygoat1975 that sounds wonderful! It’s the kind of thing anyone could participate in. Would you like to be the one to post that thread? @DannyBWell as last year’s reigning taco champion, would you be interested in organizing a repeat contest? Deciding on rules, etc. is especially important for this one. Or perhaps @TheDukeAnumber1 would like to host again? @xXInkedPhoenixX let us know if you have an idea you’d like to run with, or if you need some suggestions.
  9. Let me know if you’d like me to “emcee” things again, too. I’m happy to create the announcement post(s) but I’m also happy to let someone else do it. 😋 It looks like this will be the week of July 10? With the actual anniversary being on the 14th? If anyone’s looking for ideas, here’s what we did last year:
  10. Oh yay! I was thinking about this and I’m glad to see you’re on top of it @FlyingFishKeeper. I definitely think the aquascaping contest would be fun to repeat, since it went over so well last time. The taco eating contest also seemed popular! I’m not sure if the FishTube recommendations would actually be allowed here according to the forum rules. I love the idea but we should wait to hear from @Zenzo before moving forward with that one. I personally love the design competition one! You can pencil me in for organizing that one and I can think about how it would work. 😊 @Torrey I feel like there must be a story behind your idea. 😂
  11. Don’t worry I got you! I was just joking back 😄 Aww their voices haven’t dropped yet! They’re precious. @Sal that coop and run is GORGEOUS. It could be in a magazine!
  12. Frederick is a good two hours from me without traffic (lol funny joke right there 🤪). I’m on the Eastern Shore so nothing is close to me, but I’m hoping to make it to at least one PVAS meeting this summer just for fun.
  13. I’m also just using an old one I have from some other powerhead. 😛
  14. If you have room to keep any babies that develop tumors (ideally with males/females separate), feel free to just let her have her fry. If you don’t have room, I agree with @Colu that it would be easiest on you, and probably the fish, if you put her in a tank with some predators. ❤️

  16. Yep, that’s one of my first honeys in my profile! 😊 I think relating them to a shy betta is pretty accurate. I’ve only had two bettas and neither were shy, so I’m not entirely sure. Honeys are a bit zippier than bettas, and not as grumpy-looking.
  17. The chickens ARE your bio security! That was a bio security success!!
  18. Thanks! It most certainly did—it mostly involved (and involves) going to a local horse barn and grooming horses. 😍
  19. Ohhhhhhhhh! I had this issue last year (and this year) and this is a really interesting discovery! I’ll have to try the experiment myself.
  20. You know, I’m not sure. My impression was just that the bubbles kept the eggs in one spot so the male could guard them.
  21. Oh no!! @FlyingFishKeeperi just found this thread and now I’m up too late. 😆 I tried your first one and got this: Wordle guessed in 4/6! Can you do better? Try this wordle: https://mywordle.strivemath.com/?word=xskwl ⬜⬜🟨⬜⬜ ⬜🟨⬜🟨⬜ ⬜🟨🟨🟨⬜ 🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 #mywordle My first guess was Loach and I really had to twist my brain to get something for the fourth slot out of all the letters I eliminated. 😆
  22. Like many others, I heard Cory mention it in a video or live stream. I think I had a question about a fish health problem (that turned out to be nothing). It was so much fun to share other people’s excitement about fish, and so helpful to be able to get advice. I quickly became addicted. 😁
  23. Wow that’s really neat! Mmmm looks tasty 😋 (I’ve been raising too many tiny fry!)
