  1. there is a soup company we often order from, that when you get takeout, gives you free insulated bags. there is also a certain planted community tank company, that when you order plants and the temperature is less then 50F will give you a free liner. I used both of these bags. (liner in the soup bag, shopping bag in the liner, mystery snail bag into the shopping bag). also i didnt realize it was leaking till i got back, there was a puddle in the shopping bag, so fortunately nothing got wet. I just think the LFS didnt tie the know tight enough, i fixed that BEFORE acclimation (i love my LFS, but dont trust their water), and then everything was fine. This general conversation on acclimation seems like something that might turn into a livestream topic...
  2. i walked a Mystery Snail home 2days ago, It was like 50outside. yes, i temp acclimated. and the bag had a leak (not sure what this has to do with the topic),
  3. i always temp acclimate, especially since i usually walk animals home from the LFS, so im not so sure of the temp in the bag. (though i use insulators to try and keep the bag nice i warm.).
  4. fun! many fish enjoy having some friends, i guess yours was no exception.
  5. this is what ive been using, i havent seen the sheath in the bottom one, so i think Smaug is female. Ok, i was just going to use a "do i see eggs" as a sign to have a female, but considering she is new, and probably wasnt the best fed at the store, this could be a while.
  6. @Miska im liking those endlers! they look real good. illl be looking forward to see how the pond soil does, in all honesty, i trust you more then i trust MD. considering you already posted about having fish trouble, i think you'll give us a honest review, considering you have no loss and possibly gain from telling the truth.
  7. @Grizzly Looks like a standard guppy. Poecilia reticulata Ill say this about hybrids. basically all fish in the hobby that have been farmed for a while are hybrids, for example. You cannot go into a pet store and call a platy "xiphophorus maculatus", that is incorrect. (despite what the label claims). A platy in a pet store is a hybrid of Xiphophorus Maculatus,Variatus,Helleri and possibly a few species i forgot, so its really Xiphophorus Sp. Chances are with standard guppies, they have a mix of guppy and endler in them. so yes its probably a hybrid, but i wouldnt worry, thats normal.
  8. it looks like the same kind im working with, but then again, many mosses look similar.
  9. I am trying to figure out the sex of my new mystery snail, ever since i saw it get mounted by my male. I know they mount during breeding, but males can mount males, so im just going to see if i get eggs. How soon after breeding do they lay eggs? Its been around 27hours for me (as of posting this comment), is this too late (and i have two males), or does it take some time?
  10. Looks like a Furcata rainbowfish. Pseudomugil furcatus
  11. so i guessed by your username. i dont remember that song. but i have the Tom Bombodil one stuck in my head.
  12. yep! just like my platy fry in the 2gallon, these fish have a VERY cute stage as fry.
  13. @Guppysnail@Chick-In-Of-TheSea how long after breeding will the eggs be laid? im pretty sure Smaug is female, i got a uncomfortable look into her during the mating process. its been around 27hurs and ive seen no eggs yet.
  14. i know the top one is male. i thin considering the uncomfortable view i go into the bottom ones body during the embrace they are a M:F pair. How long after breeding is egg laying? I will reach out tomorrow to see if i can rehome any snails, if a.I can homes for snaillets and b.its a small clutch then i will raise them, oh well. its worked fine for both snails though. @PineSong i have a new update on my platy breeding projects, ill post pics in the morning (the tank light is off), but basically. A.I was trying to just make my own strain of platy but B.My platies went and did that for me, i can just take a pair and breed out that strain (which i think is unique, because ive done A LOT of research, and visited my LFS A LOT of times, and ive never seen anything like this).
  15. you have a good point. now im hoping the female wasnt fed that well in the store for smaller batches of eggs. ill have to see once the eggs are layed what i want to do. this is all overwhelming for me right now. its like when i first had platies and one gave birth 3 days later, total surprise, at least i have some warning now. i know they can have huge broods, ill consider my options once i see the eggs, Smaug (the female) is rather young compared to Batmobile, so ill see how it goes. very exciting though!
  16. hopefully they fed them well enough at the store for good egg production from the female... I didnt think id have breeding for a few weeks, so i didnt make any snail let rehoming plans yet... @Miskawant any? itll be fun for me to check out the colors on the snailets though, im rather fascinated in genetics at the moment.. @Chick-In-Of-TheSea, how should i proceed once the eggs are layed?
  17. @PineSong im tottaly trying to copy those fish in the picture. i have no males with blue, so ill have to just breed my best blue female, and get the blue in the offspring. so i moved my best female with blue to the breeding tank. The male in there is red, just because i was using him for a different project, and dont have any other setups available for breeding pairs.
  18. i tried moving them, they stayed attached. im very surprised. (but in a good way). Smaug (the female) was in that tank for like 3min after temperature acclimating when they started breeding, and Batmobile (the male) has only been in this tank for 2weeks! thats why i was so skeptical, ive barely had these snails, and breeding already?!
  19. now you have me thinking to do a project to try to stabilize the blue in my colony...🤔 oh no, im seriously considering this now, considering how much i love the shiny blue in platies.
  20. the one on top is male, ive had him for 2weeks now. the bottom one is unsexed, i just got it. however I think this is more then a hello hug. Male is on top, they are touching right side to right side (where the sex organs are). it got Smaug (bottom red one) out of her shell quickly, Male is still sitting on top in the same position, neither one is moving much. i think this is breeding... @Chick-In-Of-TheSea @Guppysnail@Cinnebuns
  21. probably an egg that came in on the plants, and hatched, they are sneaky like that.
