@dasaltemelosguy said “For one, all of the insoluble residue was soluble in plain water once filtered from the seltzer (see the lower image). So, the seltzer's pH basically forced them not simply out of the algae but out of the solution as well. That is in concert with the cell contents solubility/pH in the charts in the article. “ so I didn’t blow them up, but I DID suck the life outta them. He he he….

@Guppysnail you are the tie breaker. 😊

My sister-in-law was coordinating a wedding for a friend several years ago. The couple did not have much money, so it was a budget affair. She did an amazing job pulling everything together. But the bride was either nervous or excited as the ceremony started. She was 3/4 down the isle when my sister-in-law realized she had forgotten the bouquet. Nobody noticed until the crazy lady ran down the isle to hand it to her. they are still happily married, so I guess it worked out.

Does anyone keep a single discus in the tank?
Ken Burke replied to Barbvday's topic in General Discussion
I currently have one discus. Working on getting more, but I’m seeing some interesting behavior. When first released it, it beelined over to my angels. It hangs out with them when possible, but is spending a lot of time hiding . The angels spawned today, so it is not very welcome in the nursery. Hoping I can get an order of discus this Friday. -
AquaClear Ammonia Remover and issues with 10 gallon.
Ken Burke replied to Jen Abe's topic in General Discussion
A cycled is a trick thing, especially smaller tanks. It sounds like your tank cycled, but just barely. It wasn’t quite broken in, so your cycle crashed. I’m not sure how effective the ammonia remover is, but recommend watching very closely. What kind of filter are you running? -
I’m no expert, but I would start here: https://www.aquariumcoop.com/blogs/aquarium/how-to-treat-sick-aquarium-fish

Sorry for the late reply. @Guppysnail, you are too kind. I think of efforts like Reverse Respiration as a cord of three strands. Strand one, theoretical science, makes observations, develops working theory’s, and conducts controlled experiments in the lab. Strand two, scientific application, expands on the theory and refines the process, again through controlled experiments. I live in the third strand, practical application. Turn the handle, pull the lever, get a banana. I have satisfied my curiosity, carbonated water is effective at killing algae and snails. Now I’m curious, what was in that sediment on the bottom of my second application, and did the CO2 bubbles dislodge stuff on the plant?

@Guppysnail I had a few leave sticking out do the carbonated water just the same, I think it was somewhat effective. I had several dead snails, and lots of sediment in the bottom of the pitcher. And we have red algae!

@Fish Folk I use a pipet the same way. My angels have it figured out and swimming up to hit the end of it. tried feeding bloodworms to my new discus for the first time tonight. Couldn’t quite figure out how to down bloodworms. It ignored the daphnia, so reverted to flake. still pretty shy, hanging out with the angels when they let it. It most feel like an ugly duckling. I’m ordering a few more discus this week. That should help

So far, the crypts are going well. The swords, not so much. They were a little beat up when they arrived.

Super red bristlenose poppin off and how much to sell juveniles for?
Ken Burke replied to Kieflow's topic in Fish Breeding
Very market driven. My lfs gives me about 50% of retail unless they already have plenty in stock. I normally take what the give me, but when I sold my red sailfin corydoras I explained my costs and they agreed to a higher price. I then followed through to make sure they could move them. If the your lfs was willing to pay $7 it was a fair exchange. Just follow up and adjust your price accordingly -
Driving by a drainage culvert that normally holds shallow water today I mused, “I wonder how tall those plants get. Think I could use them in my summer tub?” My wife said, “You’re such a NERM!” Only she did not say “NERM”

Black. Or you can try the same as my 75 gallon. Basically I used a stone paint 92 coats) then a flat black. Likely will show algae, but it looks like a large rock to me.

Remind me to tell you about the time I accidentally enrolled in a Graduate nuclear engineering course. Part of a masters certificate program on nuclear effects, policy, and proliferation. I really need to stay on the shallow end of the pool.
