  1. Thanks. I have four of those otos in there. They are masters at hiding, but today this one wanted to be famous. I have really enjoyed having them.
  2. Here's my 40 breeder after I rearranged some plants. I set this up 10 months ago because the Orange Lemon Tetras outgrew their 32 gallon tank. As soon as I took the shot this little Cocoma Oto jumped in front of the camera as if saying " hey, what about me?"
  3. What pump is that? I don't think you mentioned the name and model.
  4. I would give the gift card back and ask for cash. Then I would go to my LFS. Anything but Amazon.
  5. That's a great idea I may use in the near future. Thanks.
  6. The last time I stuck my arm in a tank during the dark of night one of my favorite Orange Bolivian Lemon Tetras came flying out. I found him at daybreak glued to the floor. 😔
  7. Here's a super easy tank setup. It's a Topfin 10 gallon starter kit from PetSmart. Comes with the heater, hang on back filter, led lighted hood and thermometer. All I added is the sponge filter, sand and a few plants. I use this as a quarantine tank, but I can easily see a few cherry barbs darting around in there as a fun and easy beginner tank.
  8. If it were mine i would do the old [drill the slate to the bottom] trick. It's such a nice piece of wood, I would not want to damage it in any way.
  9. My wife knows what I like. She got this t-shirt for me that I wanted.
  10. A couple things might help you with this algae problem. First I think your light schedule is too short. Try nine hours instead of seven. Plants want light. Plants also want fertilizer. Up your nitrates to between 20 and 40 ppm. Trust me, your shrimp will not be affected. I have no shrimp troubles at 50 ppm. These two things should help your plants to thrive and out compete the algae. One other thing to watch for is over feeding. Don't let fish or shrimp food lay around the tank. Algae loves the leftover food as much as the snails.
  11. Just as a starting point here is my 40b settings. You may want to adjust up the white a bit for your taller tank. Start and end times you can adjust depending on your preferred viewing time.
  12. Another cat burglar caught on camera.
  13. This is the same java Fern I R.R.'d one month ago. It did not kill off all the bba, but maybe half of it. So I did it again. This time I left it in the seltzer for 15 hours. Also, I moved it to my 40b tank as I was rearranging it anyway. Let's see how it does this time.
  14. Very nice. My last tank I got is a 40b and I love it. There are so many things you can do with this size tank. With that matten filter in there, some shrimp would be a natural. I hope you keep us updated on your new project.
  15. Go to the Photos, Videos, and Journals page and read R.R. Reverse respiration thread. It's pinned right at the top of the page. It sounds like you have the time it would take to do the R.R. . You will have no pests of any kind afterwards.
  16. I bet the insurance agent who wrote up this policy will NOT get a Christmas bonus.
  17. I hope you can get to the bottom of this. Bums me out too.
  18. Water expands when it freezes so it probably did serious damage to the tank. You made the right call on this one.
  19. That turned out really nice.
  20. Do you have a light on the tank? Do you have anything plugged in on this tank? If so unplug it and see if the critters go back in the water. If they go back in then throw away whatever you unplugged.
  21. I just now subscribed to Amazonas magazine so I can see your article. Can't wait for it to arrive. Maybe they will give you a kickback for all the new subscriptions.
