  1. I think what really appeals to me is being in control of these tiny little worlds... I can't control what's happening in the whole world and that really gets to me sometimes, so the fact that I have the power to make these glass ecosystems lovely is really satisfying. I also just love having nature in my house! I'm a conservation biology student, and I love that I always have examples of stuff I learn in class just chilling in my bedroom.
  2. They're all doing awesome! Eating well and growing. My makeshift nursery is perfect in every way except for the fact that I can't really see anyone from the side, so it's hard to tell if anyone's putting on colour or anything.
  3. I started using #nerm on instagram when I post fish stuff, because of course. When I went to the hashtag, there's no fish stuff there! Just something about northeast road motors or something. So... should we all use #nerm on our fish social media posts?
  4. I'm sorry your first guppy experience has been rough! I agree with adding crushed coral. Do you know your pH, GH, and KH? Also sorry if I missed it but is there anyone else in the tank with them?
  5. I have had really good luck with the super cheap marina 75 air pumps. They're really quiet for about a year (then they're so cheap it doesn't hurt to replace!) I have cherry shrimp with my betta and he's totally good with it, they breed in there and everything, but every betta will be different with that so proceed at your own risk. They're awesome clean up crew though! Java fern is one of my all time favourite plants, so easy and looks awesome, plus your substrate doesn't matter since it should be tied to wood/rocks. Good luck! I love my 10 gallon betta tank. For inspiration, here it is...
  6. Thank you!! I was pretty pleased with how it turned out, it gets the perfect amount of flow in there too!
  7. I am over the moon excited about my first guppy babies!! They may “just” be guppies but I’ve never bred anything before and it’s absolutely amazing. I was planning to just leave them with the parents and let the strong survive, but their little eyes melted my heart and so I set up a little makeshift breeder box for them in my plant grow out tank, by cutting the bottom out of an (old and thoroughly washed) litter box and stretching pantyhose over the bottom!
  8. Thanks! That definitely matches up. How do they rate on the rareness/coolness scale?
  9. They came from a tank full of free guppies my mom found while buying a couch so... who knows what. I've got a mixed tank right now but I'm pretty sure once she has the babies I'll put them together and see what I can do as far as making something out of them!
  10. @Corybeing the ultimate guppy connoisseur, what do you think? Taking a chance and asking right at the top!
  11. Would malachite green help with columnaris at all? I'm currently treating with salt and I managed to find a seller on ebay to get some kanaplex, that will be here in 5-10 days, and I have some API super ick cure. It has malachite green and PVP. Would this help/do nothing/hurt?
  12. That's what happened to me! It shot out and hit me in the face, I'm actually amazed it didn't give me a black eye! It went straight up end first.
  13. With enough cover and enough space, NOTHING can hunt down every last fry! I think (think) the ram would eat the most fry, then the scarlet badis, then the gouramis.
  14. I took some huge pieces of wood from my garden and have them in my guppy tank now. I just sprayed them with a high pressure hose for a while and went for it. They are AGGRESSIVELY buoyant though, I have many rocks strategically placed to keep them down.
  15. I'll just add another vote for letting it be. 8.4 isn't insane and if all your other parameters are good, everyone should be perfectly happy
  16. Honestly I wouldn't be too worried. If you're putting everything in the new tank, there should be absolutely no disruption to your cycle. I'd put 75% of the water into the new tank, then move the fish to the new tank, then add the rest of the old tank water and top it up with fresh. You can also move the fish to a bucket since moving all your gravel and decor might stir up a lot of gunk, although that's not a huge deal either.
  17. What are your water parameters? I wonder if it's fin rot and the tetras are eating dead bits, I've seen that happen. Can you provide more details of your tank, filtration, heat, ammonia/nitrite/nitrate, hardness, pH, feeding, anything else.
  18. I witnessed my first guppy baby murder today 😰 my big giant female was finally having her babies, and a pack of about 20 fry was gathered on the top. Another female chased down one baby and grabbed him and thrashed like a shark and didn't even eat him, but also didn't kill him. I think I'm going to start a fry grow out tank so I can decide which ones get to live! But of course that means I have to be the brutal one... darn.
  19. I think I'm gonna give that a shot! I think it would be so fun to get a strain going. There also seems to be a huge void of guppy breeders in Canada.... side hustle to get me through university??
  20. I got some free guppies to add to my growing tank addiction and I've fallen crazy in love with them! There's a male and female in the group with blue eyes and they're just stunning. A quick google search of "blue eye red guppy" and "red guppy with blue eyes" gave me pretty much nothing so I was wondering... any chance this is actually something quite special that I should dedicate a breeding project to?? I apologize that these photos are no good... they absolutely do not do them justice. The blue eye especially on the girl is like a lampeye killifish, and the male has quite the impressive dorsal. Both are iridescent under the right light, too! One of my week-old fry also has blue eyes so I'm hoping she's similar.
  21. I went and bought new test kits and more salt- my ammonia was actually okay, just barely registered, but my nitrite was crazy high!! I was so worried about ammonia I forgot about nitrite. I changed 75% of the water and re-dosed salt to make it 1 TBSP per 2 gallons. After the change, Ammonia is 0 and nitrite is around 0.5, which I can live with. I'll do another big change tomorrow.
  22. Another observation- the juveniles were picking at the back of the biggest female with some white. Not sure what this means. I'm minorly freaking out... I hate this part of the hobby.
  23. Thank you for giving the update! I'm dealing with a similar thing and I think I'm in the same spot you were at the beginning.
  24. I've already got the salt in there and have no access to maracyn or other antibiotics in Canada
  25. My 10 gallon has a beautiful blue and yellow betta, 8 ember tetras, some cherry shrimp, and a nerite snail. I love it! It's my best scaped tank as well!
