Might want to try a nerite snail @nabokovfan87 if the RR isn’t killing the stuff. They love algae and biofilm. They are not livebearers and they do not result in many snails. Also, if you get a female and it lays eggs, the eggs cannot hatch. They can only hatch if the water is brackish. Keep trying on the RR in the meantime.

I read something on a thread the other day that the “crown” of the water sprite should be above the substrate. Whatever that means. 😐 -
Oh forgot to mention, after a few hr I flipped the plate over to prevent any air pocket. 😊👍 Have you tried reducing your light duration?

Testing Time: Fixing the Seachem Tidals Bypass

Um… you wanted the intake to suck up LESS stuff, yes? 🧐 That female is a big ol’ chonker, isn’t she! Do you have the light on red setting or do their backs have red coloration? I like their gray color - very sharkish. Luigi is an Italian name. They could be mob bros. Well, you said Luigi is the [mob] boss. The other one could be the henchman. Vinnie or Antonio or something. Unless it’s a girl! Also Meatball is an Italian name, and I’m pretty sure it’s gender-neutral and a very clowning-around name. 🤣 (I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a clown pleco before - they are awesome!) Does he have helpers? Thanks for humoring me with fish (and shrimp!) photos. You’ve bought yourself some rights to post more pics of gunk and slime and stuff. ⭐️ P.S. How is the weight of the ceramic media important? -

I wanted to take the eye away from the cord so I added this beauty. Anubias coffeefolia. It’s in great health. I took the lazy way out and attached it with a plant weight.- 1,525 replies

Mystery snail eggs & inverts journal
Chick-In-Of-TheSea replied to Chick-In-Of-TheSea's topic in Photos, Videos & Journals
I saw Dodger eating cichlid pellets so I fed some to the babies. They seem to like them, and it’s a food I have too much of. Guess I will integrate that into the rotation.- 1,895 replies

Results I see improvement, but still see some brown clinging to the leaves. Could be dead diatoms? Overall leaves appear “shinier”.

Cloudy Water - Not Sure How to Get Rid of It
Chick-In-Of-TheSea replied to Twood's topic in General Discussion
I heard hornwort is exceptional for clearing cloudy water. -
Agreed! A great stress reliever! I’m studying for my CPA exams. There are 4 that I have to take in an 18 month period, otherwise the oldest ones expire, one by one, and I’d have to retake them. So. much. material. 😬🤯 Aquascaping, watching fish, and raising snails has helped me with relaxation in this stressful time.

Java Fern Decline: Why?
Chick-In-Of-TheSea replied to PineSong's topic in Plants, Algae, and Fertilizers
This is great news. I have Java fern and some of it developed spots which then turn the leaves totally brown eventually. Also my Java moss was brown. Could be diatoms so I’m over on the reverse respiration thread for that. This past week I dosed Green Leaf aquatics potassium for the first time. I chose this product because there are no other ingredients, and I am already using Easy Green. And it was so cheap! A whole pound for only $5 and I use less than 1/8 tsp for my tank. Fingers crossed! -
TeeJays first mystery snail clutch has hatched!
Chick-In-Of-TheSea replied to TeeJay's topic in General Discussion
Same happened to me, in a WELL seasoned tank! But of course you know I overfed it. Which is suuuuuper easy to do with egg yolk. -
TeeJays first mystery snail clutch has hatched!
Chick-In-Of-TheSea replied to TeeJay's topic in General Discussion
Or a tank! Because remember with the tote you can only really watch them from above. The totes are not great for side viewing. Not clear enough. Just depends on your budget. Plus a tote can be easily placed on the floor. Haha, you knew I’d say something about egg yolk! 😂😂 -

The heavier the better then? A prefilter sponge is a great option to prevent this. Also side note: if you’re going to post disgusting photos you need to follow that up with a photo of a cute fish or something! LOL 🤢+🐠 -

Anyone tried Aqueon's SmartClean technology?
Chick-In-Of-TheSea replied to Chick-In-Of-TheSea's topic in General Discussion
Kind of what I’m doing for the QT tote. I use a plastic beer pitcher that I got at some festival to scoop water out and into my bucket. I don’t really vac unless I see stuff, in my case, dust from carbon. In which case I use a turkey baster. -
TeeJays first mystery snail clutch has hatched!
Chick-In-Of-TheSea replied to TeeJay's topic in General Discussion
If you do end up having the cycle/bioload issues later, this is a thought too. I just did extra water changes because I wanted to see the little guys. The downside of the tote is you can’t really get a good look at them. Oh my gosh, you’re going to have so much fun with this. Parasnailing everywhere and snail antics (one time I saw 3 snails stacked vertically on the 4th snail, like he was an Uber or something, and he was traveling right along.) Also I had some floating plants but they would go up, grab one, and then parasnail down with it. No more floating plants but who cares? It was worth it to watch that craziness. -

Just run your air and you can ghost feed, lightly, until they are born. I’d say like, a month & a half. -

I wish I could siphon but with a tank low to the ground, the gravity is not there to pull the water out.
