  1. I have a 10 gallon that I have a betta in. I was looking at tank mates and I've come to ember tetras and pygmy corydoras, but I have one concern. I have crushed coral topped with river stones and I'm wondering if, while they're digging through the substrate, the crushed coral could hurt their barbels. It's just a shallow layer of each so the crushed coral does show through a little bit around the river stones. If this is the case, I'll just go with malaysian trumpet snails or maybe kuhli loaches if they wouldn't have the same problem, but I'd really prefer the corydoras if ya'll don't think it'll be a problem. I'm also wondering if there may be problems with this plan that ya'll can see that I, as a new hobbyist, might not have thought about. I do have a backup plan if the ember tetras and corydoras don't work in the tank, btw, so I'm not too concerned about that.
  2. It's already twice as big as my green fire tetras so I'm wondering what exactly this thing is 🤣 It's super fast, darting back and forth in the quarantine tank. I really like it so now I want more of them cause it's clearly a schooling fish from what I can tell.
  3. So I ordered some green fire tetra from my local fish store, all 10 of those are perfectly fine, but I got this random tetra that's so much bigger than the rest of them and unlike the rest of the tetras that I got, this one has not colored up and behaves so much differently than the rest of them, so my question is what is this? An adult female that's just really pale or a completely different species? Update: When it passes by, I see the faintest of blue stripe down it's body.
  4. I got a package from aquacoop yesterday with a bunch of stuff but new plants and repashy were the main things. My snails are absolutely loving their new food!
  5. I don't want to keep all of them but at the same time, I don't have the heart to cull them either. I got a 10 gallon tank yesterday and they're gonna move into there once I get it set up, but in the mean time I'm just going to feed the mystery snails in my floating breeder box and put them back in the main tank after they're done eating and feed the rest of the snails a lot less than they've been getting.
  6. Thank you so much for the advise, I'm sorry I haven't responded I got caught up doing a lot of things. The mystery snails are still alive, there's enough calcium so they're good on that, I've seen them eating but the food gets quickly overrun by ramshorn snails because I have so many cause I overfeed cause I'm scared the mystery snails aren't getting enough so the problem cycles 😅. The problem I should have been worrying about is my nitrates though, those are... Not good is a light way of putting it. Everything else came out absolutely perfect as far as tests go, but god, the nitrates were awful. I should have been on top of it but I wasn't and that's the real problem. Onto how I'm fixing the overfeeding problem, I've bought some repashy food, thank you for the advise on that I didn't even know that was a thing I could buy, I'm waiting for it to come in, should be here in a few days, I've set out a trap so that I can remove some of the ramshorn snails, the Malaysian trumpet snails are fine as far as population goes, and I'm going to be gravel vac-ing in there this weekend to get rid of the tiny baby snails I'm finding. I have a plan for how I'm going to fix the nitrates as well, and hopefully I've got it all fixed by the time the quarantine period ends for the betta in a week or two. I ordered some new plants to go in there and am removing some plants that are no longer wanted from the 30 gallon. If I continue seeing a problem with the mystery snails not getting enough food, I'll just move them into the quarantine tank as buddies for the rest of the community fish I plan on quarantining. If that doesn't end up working out, I don't see anything wrong with setting up another permanent tank and finding them a fishy friend. 🤣 Again, sorry to leave ya'll hanging like that. I really appreciate yall taking the time to answer.
  7. I've got two mystery snails in my 30 gallon aquarium along with entirely too many ramshorn snails and some trumpet snails. I'm trying to feed enough to keep these mystery snails alive because I've already lost two of them but the ramshorn snails are eating everything too fast and they just explode in population. I don't really have the option of moving the mystery snails to a different tank because the only other tank I have right now is a 10 gallon quarantine tank for my betta, how do I keep the mystery snails alive long enough to get through this quarantine? I love all of my snails but having lost three of my favorite ones, another being my only japanese trapdoor snail whom I lost this morning, I would rather make sure that the mystery snails don't die as well. Should I get another tank and what should I do in the mean time while I wait to have the funds to do this?
  8. Would it be a good idea to put a snail with a betta? I plan on setting up a 5-10 gallon planted tank for a betta and was wondering if an apple snail would be a good idea because I have a few? Does it depend on the betta's personality or is it black and white on whether it'll work? And would there be a specific way that I should introduce them or does it not matter?
  9. And to add to that, you still need to feed them once the algae is gone. Lots of "algae eaters" end up starving.
  10. What do you think of using the assorted berry tums in making snello? Cause I have an entire thing of these tums and if I don't have to buy calcium for my snello for awhile, that'd be cool.
  11. Hey, I can't really see properly but do you have the java fern planted into the substrate? If you don't, cool, but if you do, the rhizome can't be planted in the substrate or it'll die. Again, sorry if you're doing it right I just can't see well enough to make sure and I figure you'd wanna know.
  12. I did a water change on my quarantine/snail tank and realized that I probably shouldn't feed my snails as much as I am right after cycling the tank. 😅 The nitrites are a little out of control right now so I'm gonna leave them alone for a few days.
  13. Would it matter which tums you're using or is any alright? I'm assuming not.
  14. Yeah, the cloudiness is typical for a new tank. That's actually a really good thing, it means there's bacteria in the water. Time to celebrate! At that point, I put plants in my tank and it cycled for me so you might wanna do that, but I just put snails in my tank yesterday so I'd recommend talking to someone more experienced, but your filter is working just fine, trust me.
  15. I also have an aquaclear 50. It works just fine, trust me. The intake is enough for a 37 gallon, it cleared up my 29 gallon in less than a day after stirring up my fluval stratum so much I couldn't see in the tank. I also have a sponge on my intake. If you're concerned with flow, make sure that the intake tube is pushed all the way to the left for the highest amount, but you should be good.
  16. Finally got the valisneria, java fern, red dwarf lily, and anubius nangi out of the rock wool and into the tank! All of the java fern was from one pot and there's even more in the quarantine tank at the moment cause I don't want to take ALL of the bacteria from the plants out just yet. I also have java moss in the quarantine but just as soon as this tank cycles and I can move the snails over, I'll be moving everything else to the display tank. The light I'm using is a Hygger 16w with an Aquaclear 50 filter, no heater because the water stays a toasty 76F without it right now. Background soon to come. Thank you Cory and coop team for such lovely, hardy plants! Also, please tell me if I have the red dwarf lily planted incorrectly, I'm just guessing at this point. 😅
  17. I'd look into an apple snail. Pretty peaceful and they come in great colors. Apple snails also don't asexually reproduce so you'll only have one as long as you didn't get a female with stored sperm from the store. Even if that happens, you can just push the egg sack, which she lays above the water line, into the water and the eggs will die, problem solved. It'll help eat the algae off of the glass and just be a cool little buddy to have!
  18. I put the snails in yesterday. There's bladder, trapdoor, mystery, ramshorn, and trumpet snails. Could this be eggs or is this something up with the java moss?
  19. It might be good to do so for a few weeks, typically 2 - 3 so that the fish diseases they carry will die off without a fish host. That's the advice I've seen, take it with a grain of salt. I haven't done it myself yet.
  20. Also these white things are on my anubius? Might have to do with the fact that there's a bladder snail in there but I'm not at all certain.
  21. Back home, I posted an update on one of the plants in the tank in the plant forum.
  22. Alright, I'm back from evacuation, what is going on with this thing? It's growing but moldy? Temp for the tank while I was gone was 82 - 86 but there were small trails of white mold? algae? before I left.
  23. To keep ya'll updated, I'm okay, me and my family are safe, the hurricane brushed passed my home so at worst, it's probably a power outage. Sucks for my nitrogen cycle but there's no fish luckily. Praying for that little bladder snail and my plants but we're okay.
