  1. So I have this guppy and I think it's a male, but I dont have a lot of practice sexing guppies early on so I wanted to see if someone could help. It's quite colorful and doesn't have a dark spot at the anal fin, but most of my fry are quite young so it could just be too early. Video
  2. Thank you! I appreciate the help @Guppysnail @Galabar
  3. I just reset one of my tanks, dumped out the substrate, scraped algae, etc. I put the crypt that was in there into a terracotta pot and put it back in because I want this tank to be a bare bottom tank for guppy fry. I noticed when I put it in the tank that there's still adhesive from the sticker bar code on the terracotta. Do yall think it's safe for the fry or should I try to remove it? Also, if I need to remove it, what would be a fry safe way to do so?
  4. I moved my newest female guppies into their new tank. It's a very simple set up and there are only two female guppies that are big enough to go into this set up, but everyone is finally done with quarantine so I'm enjoying the tank. This is my first group of guppies since I lost all of my others, so I'm excited to start again and hopefully do better this time.
  5. Sounds good. I did a 50% water change, added the recommended amount of maracyn 2, and I'll go buy epsom salt tomorrow. I found some epsom salt with no additives on my local grocery store's website so I'll just grab that. Thank you! I hope she gets better, this is my favorite female out of the 3 I have left.
  6. So this guppy has been progressively getting more bloated on one side for the past few days, I bought maracyn 2 just in case it's dropsy and I got it in today. I know once they get this bad, there's little chance of curing them, but the thought process is curing the others before they start to show? I'm just not sure if this is dropsy just because it's so lopsided. I've been researching and this could also maybe be fish tuberculosis but ultimately I'm not sure. I doubt at this point it's a constipation issue, only the fry in the tank have been fed for the past few days. Any help is appreciated. Here's a short video of the fish, she's pineconing on the bloated side and very slightly pineconing on the not bloated side. No control of her swim bladder at this point and lethargic. https://youtu.be/3snLAq8rwEY As far as water perimeters go, they're pretty much the same as the last time I posted about disease in this tank pH: 7.2 - 7.4 Nitrates: 5ppm Hardness: 71.6 (4 drops on GH API test) Nitrite: 0ppm Ammonia: 0ppm KH/Buffer: 53.7 (3 drops on KH API test) Water Temperature: 79-80F
  7. It's an imagitarium breeder box from petco. I got it when I first started and I still really like it!
  8. Good news, they figured out that it's food. I'll be taking this out in an hour or two.
  9. Sounds good! Time to pull out the ole mortar and pestle 🤣 Seriously tho, thank you! Question, what do you think about a smaaall piece of community plus repashy? Think they'll pick at it or will they just ignore it?
  10. Day four, this is how theyre looking! Fed them egg yolk mixed with their water and some baby brine shrimp today. What should I feed them to mix it up? Also I realize their breeder box is a little dirty, I did a water change last night and I did do a little bit of cleanup just now, but I also just fed them. @Henry the fish keeper I decided not to move them to the new tank for now just because I'm having a hard time keeping the ammonia levels down. I plan on working on it on Friday, but I'm really busy atm.
  11. I've watched this video. He's not explaining anything in detail, he's just using guppies to teach others how genetics works. I already know how it works, I want to know the details. I appreciate the link tho!
  12. Like what traits are dominant, recessive, co-dominant, etc. I'm wanting to do some guppy breeding to figure out how colors, patterns, tail shape and size, etc interact but I'm not finding too much on the different traits that guppies have and how they present phenotype-wise.
  13. The babies had their first meal today! So stinkin cute. I gave them frozen brine shrimp
  14. I spent around 8 hours messing with my aquariums today. Did a teeny bit of an aquascape that I know is gonna fall apart in a few weeks and I've accepted it 🤣 I've got red flame sword, baby tears, dwarf hairgrass, cryptocoryn pink flamingo, scarlet temple, a java moss spider I got for half off cause the store didnt have any regular java moss, and aponogeton crispus in this tank. The crypt and scarlet temple are both tissue cultures that I'm trying my hands at. If they die, no skin off my bones. I'll replace the scarlet temple with some pogostemon stellarus octopus I have entirely too much of and I'll fill in the empty space where the crypt is with more baby tears if worse comes to worse. I'm very excited to see this tank clear up and grow out! I also was taking care of some guppy fry today which took a lot longer than it really needed to, but theyre fine now. In their breeder box tempting their cannible tank mates. I cant wait to see what they start looking like as they grow!
  15. Sounds good! I found another guppy fry and I might have figured out who the mother is! I'll keep you updated!
  16. You don't think that the potential ammonia spikes from the substrate would be too much of a problem? I have frozen baby brine shrimp and repashy community plus, do you think they would enjoy this? The red stuff at the bottom of the breeder box is baby brine shrimp, I fed them as soon as I got them in but I haven't really seen them bite at it yet.
  17. No signs of any diseases that I can see, they're voracious and seemingly healthy! Also all are heavily pregnant, not my doing but I'm excited to see what I get!
  18. In the wake of some unfortunate loses in my tank this morning, I have some good news! I found 6 little guppy fry swimming around my female guppy quarantine tank today. I have no idea who the mom is because all of the living ones still look pregnant, could have been one of the ones I lost, I probably wont know until they grow up and even then, I don't know who they bred with. That being said, look at these cuties! Now, I have a few questions. These are my first guppy fry, not my first fry, I've had quite a few ember tetras before which is always welcome, but those were accidents and I never actively took care of them. This is a whole new world to me. As I said before, they're currently in a quarantine tank with four adult female guppies. I fished them into a breeder box I had and put some pogostemon stellatus octopus in there for them to hide in and be made comfortable. The quarantine tank currently has 3 doses of paracleanse running through it with another dose being planned tonight. It also has crushed coral and 3 tbsp of aquarium salt which was added yesterday. Are they safe to be in there as I run through this treatment? This is the alternative tank that I was actually putting together just for the purposes of having guppy fry in it. The plants are currently floating because I overestimated how much fluval stratum that I had and none of the plants besides a few pieces of dwarf hair grass can sit in the thin layer I have. I was thinking of either getting more or just capping off the substrate with a layer of crushed coral. I realize that the fluval stratum is leeching nutrients into the water as we speak. I think I might have enough plants to soak all of it up, but the only possible bacteria that is in that tank is from the plants because that tank went through a heavy round of disinfecting. I have a sponge filter sitting in my other quarantine tank with honestly perfectly healthy fish in there. It's two male guppies that I've had for months, I just haven't finished their medication cycle and I restarted last week after having done a round of medications when I first got them and life happening. They're probably completely fine and the filter just hanging out in there is probably completely fine and more importantly has bacteria in there. TLDR; My question is should I keep the new guppies I have in the breeder box or should I, with normal parameters after thorough testing, move the fry to this new tank using a drip acclimation? @Henry the fish keeper Here are the pictures that I was talking about! Any advice would be very appreciated!
  19. I appreciate it. This may not have helped my current guppies but I'll be able to help future guppies with similar problems a lot faster with what I've learned.
  20. Unfortunately the ones at my closest store go too quickly and the ones I got from this petco were there for only 2 days. I'll keep this in mind tho! I'm about to post the fry. You've been so much help, I truly appreciate it.
  21. A petco about 45 minutes away. Unfortunately I dont have a very good local mom and pop fish store. The petco closer to me is actually really good, but it was gonna be around week before they were gonna get more female guppies in and when I checked on the ones they got, they looked healthy, and they probably were, their aquatics team is great, but they were all one color. Update on the two guppies that were sick in my tank, both died today. The dropsy one died around 7am and I went back to bed with my little girl in the breeder box not looking great. Woke up a few hours ago and she had died. There is a bright side to this tho! Someone in the tank gave birth to at least 6 fry! I found them in the tank running from the adults so I scooped them and put them in the breeder box with a piece of pogostemon octopus. I'm really upset about losing the breeder box girl, she would color up so pretty in the mornings, but there wasnt much I could do. I'll post pictures in a different tag and tag you if you'd like to see them!
  22. I will. I'm really regretting buying from that specific fish store. The last time I did, I lost all of the guppies I got from them but it's been awhile and these looked healthy so I took a chance. I'm really regretting that decision.
  23. Sounds good! These are the photos that I've gotten of the same guppy today. I caught one of my other guppies being a bully to her on camera so I moved this little girl to a floating breeding box. I haven't seen that guppy bully any other fish yet but I'm keeping an eye out. The more I look at the pictures, the less I think there's hole in the head and the more I think that somethings just wrong with her left eye.
  24. Update: Good news, the one that I had you comment on started eating yesterday. I fed very little, I just wanted to see if she would bite and she did. Bad News: Looks like she probably has hole in the head as well which luckily paracleanse helps with but that developed this morning. Also looks like her sister developed dropsy last night before I went to bed. I'm currently actively treating with paracleanse and I don't have another hospital tank, I already have two running and the other has my male guppies. Should I dose with Maracyn as well or maybe just add some aquarium salt?
  25. I used the recommended ratio for the brand of bleach that I used, which was about 7.5 cups per 10 gallons. I used seachem prime and used about 4-5ml (a cap full) of prime for the 1st rinse and the same amount again for the second. I have the nets and siphons hanging up to dry right now and the filter is taken apart and drying on a towel. I'm glad you think I'm doing this right. I've only been keeping fish for almost two years and luckily disease isn't something that has come up often. This is the first time I've had to nuke a tank and it was upsetting losing all of the plants and substrate but I was already beyond done dealing with that tank. It had been having so many issues and I'm glad to start over. All of my other tanks are luckily looking great, just have a sick fish in one of the quarantine tanks that I'm looking to medicate so hopefully I've rinsed everything off good enough cause I need that siphon soon. I'll look into the salt/sunlight sterilization. I figured out last night that I have a pretty severe sensitivity to bleach. I'm not gonna rule out using bleach in the future, but I appreciate the alternative! Thank you!
