  1. @Acara Mom, please keep going. I have some tanks and buckets that I just keep going to see what will happen, with no plan. As long as I am keeping things alive, it is fun to let these ecosystems run!
  2. @Acara Mom, start an aquarium journal and put a link in your signature so that we can all follow along!
  3. Videos can have some good info, but with forum tank journals, you can see how members deal with tanks over the course of months and years.
  4. @Acara Mom, I was getting tons of hair algae in just one tank, despite running the same settings with multiple tanks. This tank was in a different room, and the windows were driving the additional algae growth. I have it documented in my Indoor journal.
  5. In my experience with algae v plants, it can be really helpful to address window light and ambient light besides just looking at your tank lights and parameters. Blackout curtains for my kitchen/dining room helped me really get things balanced in a bright room.
  6. I really enjoy organic soil tanks. I generally use organic topsoil, which doesn't include manure. Your substrate is very powerful if it includes chicken manure, and it might limit your choice of livestock. Unless you want to reboot your substrate, you might want to focus on plants for a while.
  7. You should be able to find a good height to deal with small variations in water depth. The included magnets are very powerful, designed for thick glass. Be careful, and store them with padding if necessary.
  8. Even better that you try it in marine! My experience with Tunze units was that they were very sensitive to the water level relative to the skimmer intakes. They would do best in tanks where the waterline is automatically maintained.
  9. @Isaac M, I had taller wood, but eventually duckweed removal became more important than emergent wood.
  10. @Isaac M, I tried a similar Tunze filter: Let me know your experience with testing marine technology in freshwater aquariums!
  11. I gave away all the Rubber Plants that I was growing out. Here are some of my smaller tanks. 1.25, 3 x 2.5, 7.5 gallons.
  12. Whenever I look at moths now, I imagine how they look under UV and IR!
  13. I made another Cabot batch. I think it might have more cheese.
  14. Purigen should be for emergency room usage only.
  15. I would filter it all out. As a sailor, I have dealt with fiberglass scraps, and carbon fiber splinters, and they are the worst. Wear gloves and get rid of it all! Then throw out the gloves!
  16. @HH Morant, I grew a lot with ambient light before I got blackout curtains. I still enjoy keeping just a bit on the wood in my 16 bow. I think my Betta might sleep in it.
  17. Purigen is a synthetic substance that can absorb certain things, but it requires a very specific bleach regimen to recharge it. If you mess it up, you endanger your ecosystem.
  18. Purigen is not a long-term solution for balance.
  19. If you can keep hair algae attached to a piece of wood, it can be nice in an aquarium.
  20. Dies allelopathy plays a role? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allelopathy
  21. With a pH probe, you can see the pH change during both photosynthesis and respiration.
