  1. You can also try as an extra measure, in the quarantine tank, to make one of those planaria traps like in the Mark's Shrimp Tanks video. It's an API test tube and a piece of airline. The planaria can fit in there, but the snails can't. The trap may attract some during the times when you are not there to siphon planaria out.
  2. Here is a chart from the medicine No Planaria. As you can see, the effect on snails You might end up with 2 tanks infested with planaria, because their eggs, etc. I'd put the snails in a bucket or bare bottom tank or tote with air and filtration, then you can vacuum up the parasites you see with a turkey baster
  3. I agree with this @CJs Aquatics. Even with removing the snails, if you use a planaria killing medicine on the tank, it's hard to really know when that med is removed (with carbon/water changes, etc). It is reported by some users of these meds that they added snails back 2 months later after a bunch of water changes and carbon, and the snails still died. Seems any trace of the meds will be a detriment, so I would go with @Guppysnail's suggestion to use the peroxide or the seltzer. But first, are you sure it is planaria? There are several different types of flatworms out there. Roundworms as well.
  4. @CJs Aquatics have you collected any botanicals (wood, rocks, leaves) from outside or ponds and put them in your tank?
  5. @Guppysnail @Cinnebuns @Colu @CJs Aquatics what symptoms are you seeing? Nice tips about making planaria traps in this video.
  6. Not near mine either. Closest one is 2 hours. I used the Nextdoor app to adopt out mystery snails to nearby hobbyist neighbors before though.
  7. Here's an aquarium club finder. Perhaps that could be an option. https://www.aquariumcoop.com/apps/store-locator @Guppysnail finds hobbyists near her using the Band app also.
  8. That sucks. I live in FL and I try to avoid plant/livestock orders in the summer. Some people put a cooler on their front porch with a big sign for delivery drivers to put the boxes into the cooler if they know they are getting a shipment. But that doesn't help much if the boxes are on a hot truck all day. Did you hear about the UPS drivers getting heat exhaustion? I try to find my local fish stores and buy plants and animals there whenever I can, but will resort to big box stores if the local stores don't have a good/healthy selection.
  9. How fun. I used to keep mbunas that were mouth brooders as well. It’s fun when they yawn and you can see all the little eyeballs.
  10. @Shadow it looks so amazing. The music in this video wasn’t as sexy as the other video’s music. 😂 That’s ok though.
  11. If they are swimming around like crazy after water change time, they are stressed. Also if a bunch molt the next day or overnight, also water change stress. This can happen with drip water changes too, if changing a large %
  12. This sounds like all the tasty things shrimp love. Some foods say “prevent failed molts”. I need to look up the minerals or nutrients that that refers to. I always feel like there’s so much more I need to know or should know about shrimpkeeping. The learning curve seems steep. Part of that is because of the illness that I had to contend with. I’m guessing calcium is one of the happy molt things. Maybe magnesium also? Just guessing, idk Something else interesting is drip water changes. I do “full speed” through airline tubing, but my friend does drop by drop through airline tubing. I think I’m ok with what I’m doing because I was having losses just dumping new water in with a bucket. Since I’ve moved to the fully-speed-airline tubing method, they don’t perish after water change. I wonder what is considered “the right way”. Another thing on the to do list to look up.
  13. Asked my husband for a plant stand for my birthday, and told him I put one in the Amazon cart. “Someone” just needed to click the checkout button. 😝 #marriedshopping Before: After: Also I found this thing in the dirt: And decided to spruce it up. That was very relaxing to work on. I sprayed a matte uv-resistant clear coat on it and will hang it from my plant stand when it dries. Enjoy Nature Daily 🌸
  14. Why? Do you think the pest snail eggs would be attached to the hob? The hair algae would be more obvious, but pest snail eggs are clear.
  15. Reverse respiration may work on the whole tank(?) but you want to make sure there are no fish or other creatures in there, just the pest snails and the hair algae, and the plants. @dasaltemelosguy @Guppysnail Nice thing about it is it wouldn’t leave traces of potentially harmful stuff behind in the tank like meds would.
  16. My Bolivian ram is very peaceful. I don’t think she would hunt fry. She was in with shrimp at one time and left them alone. For population control I’d go with something like barbs. @xXInkedPhoenixX has a Bolivian ram and also has black neon fry, and the ram didn’t bother the fry.
  17. Which one? The hob? The bottom part is a compartment with its own slotted lid (that sits under the sponges). Not a lot of space in there. For other types of media, I’d leave that middle lid off perhaps, but for the carbon I snapped the lid on because the carbon I have seems floaty. Good idea!
  18. Today is the final phase of treatment for scutariella japonica (besides a good siphoning which I plan to do this weekend), and that is to add carbon to the tanks as an aid to remove the No Planaria. For the 10g I used a small Marina HOB with a cartridge and a co op media bag of carbon. I know this filter blows around shrimplets, so I added a baffle. I wasn’t 100% confident in the small, coarse PFS so I added a nylon to it for safety of the little ones. For the 5g I used this box filter. It was a bit of a challenge, seeing that every shrimp found it “extremely necessary” to be in, and return to, that corner of the tank. I ended up removing the lid because I noticed a shrimplet went in there and didn’t know how to get out. Also the lid was creating extra buoyancy. This unit is always initially buoyant and needs some runtime before that subsides. In general I don’t like this filter because it is a pain to maintain. It is good for quarantine applications, etc though. Look @nabokovfan87, filter mods and even a diagram! 🤣 The specimen container snail tank now has an official light. Lastly, a cute shrimp video for your enjoyment. ☺️ Happy Friday!
  19. This is the tank I have the Hygger 24/7 on. No algae, but you can see how the plants are growing. The Aponogeton is so tall that the leaves lay horizontal on the surface. Lot of hornwort up there too. So that stuff is creating shade for the tank and I guess any algae would not get enough light in this setup.
