Anyone here know Rudyard Kiplings poem “If” ? I’ve done a fishy version!

If you can breed your fish

When all about you fail and blame it on you

If you can set up another tank when all around you advise not to

But make allowance for their doubting too

If you can scape and not be tired by scaping

Or scrape, don’t deal in algae scraping

Or being a NERM, don’t give way to downsizing

And yet not look too good, nor talk too wise

If you can gravel vac, but not make vaccing your master

If you can dose ferts to make your plants grow faster

If you can meet with planaria and columnaris and not let those speed bumps get in your way

If you can bear to ship the fish that you’ve bred, processed by USPS to make a trap for fools

Or watch the tanks that you have your life to, algified

And clean and plant ‘‘em again with an Amano Army as tool

If you can make one group of all your juvies

And risk them all at an aquarium swap

And sell out, and start again with a pair of guppies

And yet again reach the top

If you can make your barbs and plecos and tetras spawn when past their best

And culture live foods to give their fry life of such high a zest

If you can talk with beginners and keep your virtue

Or walk along Fishtubers and not lose the hobbyists touch

If neither Ich nor loving puffers can hurt you if all meds count with you, none doses too much

If you can fill the unforgiving fishroom

With installations made through serendipity

Yours is the aquarium hobby, but not too soon

And - which is more - you can have a Murphy!

For anyone who knows the original I expect it’s quite funny 😁

I had one like that.  It was from the Aponogeton.  I enjoyed it for awhile hoping I would get some seeds from it, but eventually I snipped it so the plant could focus energy on its leaves.

What are the care requirements of your stick insects. Looks like they are vegetarians, but doesn't your tank have some water in the bottom?  Do they have a specific moisture requirement?

They’re veggies, and they tolerate anything above 60% humidity (having a water bowl in the enclosure already puts it up to 70%, so I just took it a bit further. 😂)

Maybe you could put a fish or a snail in there.

Also, what are the chances we could get a short video of the stick insect at feeding time? ☺️

I’ve seen stuck bugs (at my local nature center) a video and a picture of them eating (or doing anything) is basically the same!

Honestly I wouldn’t but fish (anything will take a shot out of one of the stick bugs)

also I’m not sure if a water feature is safe for the stick bug. I’ll look into it more but it seems like they can drown

From what I’ve read it seems that this species drown easily (especially the nymphs) and they like stable humidity and good ventilation, also I’m not sure if they actually can drink from the water. But at the end of the day it’s your stick bug! Tank definitely looks nice and it’s nice to see that you did successfully do a water feature (I’ve heard they are very difficult to do in a terrarium)

It’s magnified 🤣

Sadly I don’t do YouTube, on pain of ending up as the leaf that they’re eating 🫠. Not that the vid would be interesting though…maybe a Timelapse?

Might be when they’re small(er)?

The watertight area of the terrarium can hold exactly 8 liters. Take away 2/3 or so from that (occupied by soil) and you have about 2.33 liters (0.62 gal). Maybe a shrimp or something, but I’m not comfortable with keeping something in such a small container, what with pH crashes and ammonia etc…

But I could do water changes with a bottle top…🐸

From what I understand it’s especially a concern with young but I think that the adults are also at risk, the problem (from my understanding/ inference) is the stick bug falls in can’t get out and starves/ drowns

you probably should be fine just be cautious

Went to the LFS to get a duckweed net 😑, not the most interesting thing, I know, but I managed to snap a couple of pics:24FC72CD-D6E3-4052-AEDA-B3182F0B8BAF.jpeg.80aeed8f8905fed45d9e04dc52dad0d0.jpeg09FC4B16-D598-45B2-89D3-B73172A5FB05.jpeg.f52599447aeb67f98dd283f7a5575f9e.jpeg8D4788B1-5271-45A7-BC91-9BCA23F8E1A4.jpeg.d1aad717c5d74f255eb2edcddcca7376.jpegB25E52F3-709E-4C21-BFE3-A41C0AD163BD.jpeg.d44a1122d593ab8ee2b32af554b7919d.jpegFE2514E2-2F0F-4E7A-9D45-6B6BA2EB397D.jpeg.25e192798b0aaab02c8d5d1d510d31b2.jpeg

I’m debating on the merits of a patio pond…probably with Goldfish or WCMM. I originally planned to do rainbow shiners in a 60 gal plastic cow water trough; but my parents said a straight ‘no’ to that being sunk into the garden…a 30 gal bucket could pass.

Any suggestions? Night temperatures are round 55 (Fahrenheit 💩), up to 76ish in the daytime; although we do get the occasional 88 degree roasting. @Dean’s Fishroom @Fish Folk

@TheSwissAquarist thanks for sharing some photos of your LFS. I recently ordered some duckweed nets myself online.

Personally, I prefer to keep fish over summer that will multiply quickly. I’m using 40-gallon stock tubs. I plan to try Swordtails in one, and Guppies in the other.

By May, I add my plants from a local nursery. I add fish by June.

That gourami is beautiful, and it’s really refreshing to see they have the betta in a tank, not a cup. I saw a BIG but beautiful green terror at my LFS with long flowing fins. Just gorgeous. There was another large orange (or red?) fish that was interacting with me, watching me, following me- I’d take a couple steps this way, a couple steps that way ..the eyes would turn first, then the fish would turn its body would turn to point at me. I did look at the name of the fish but have now forgotten it. I believe it was a cichlid. Name began with an a, I think? Such a personality!

Sunday Fish time!
No April fools: I’ve started my fifth (or sixth?) attempt at breeding Salt’n’Pepper corydoras. Persistence will hopefully reward me with fry. 7C4094F1-BC5B-4E94-A458-5A6BF76D75B2.jpeg.f9ed1cc81d0a9d3f6ddded3d07624ab8.jpeg4C9ADA81-4DAF-40D7-A7CD-488F435B01E4.jpeg.3d1cd2337168bd14789fe8807c710521.jpeg

Norhing fancy, just some Limnophilia strands, a cave, rocks, and a spawning mop. I’ll only leave them in 2 days, or until I find eggs, and then try the same method on the first attempt. Breeder box + air. Fingers crossed that it works! 🤞

Apart from that I have taken @Chick-In-Of-TheSeas advice and trimmed my Aponongeton (I though it was a lotus! 🤯) flower. It was 58 centimeters long! E6CCFD36-7566-4822-BCE5-A903071EFE8E.jpeg.60d48e1ec30f33c29b38feabee3546f7.jpeg

Although my efforts maybe futile…image.jpg.639427ea772e447258804f88e4fcf01f.jpg

The duckweed war has started again…I won’t win, but I like to think I can .🤓

The fan broke. 😕

I bet it's an easy fix! Probably a PC fan / molex connector.  Send me a photo if you want! (I just saw the photo and was thinking about fish water going down all the tiny holes 😞 )

hm, interesting!

6. A Weak or Inoperable Fan

If the table looks clean but the motor keeps failing to turn on, try looking for a reset button. Otherwise, the motor itself might need to be replaced. After checking the fan for dust and reinserting it, if it continues to turn weakly or fails to turn, the motor or blower system might have an electrical issue.

Tables usually come with a centrifugal fan with angled blades, and it's best to contact the manufacturer for a replacement. As for the motor, make sure you buy the right kind if you're using a third-party source. Tables built and sold for home use often contain a smaller blower system than tournament-quality tables. A malfunctioning motor or fan could require professional replacement.
