Need some advice (not for my personal fish)
Pizzafan replied to Sandra the fish rookie's topic in General Discussion
Honestly, the internet is a game changer. I had fish as a kid and killed every one of them with ich and overstocking. Who knew? Now, it’s so much easier to figure out how to do things correctly. She will probably come to read about these fish she bought… and will hopefully learn the lesson without needing explicit instruction. Even if there’s a few fatalities this go around, the next ones might be better researched -

I bought 8 from aquahuna - they all came alive and small (.5 inches?). You should get at least that many - I think more would be better (I want!), but also kind of expensive -

I also got green neon Rasboras for my 20 gallon to fill in the “empty space” - they are really cool and the colors are neat. They stay together quite well, are active, and not big -
I don’t necessarily think Bolivian rams are the coolest, but I own one in my 20G long and he’s my favorite fish to watch! Also cool watching them feed and spitting out sand
-
Great advice here - mine are pretty long that I bought. May trim them down considerably

Hi- I got some hornwort hoping it might naturally help with reducing my staghorn algae (not really privy to trying a bunch of chemicals, etc to get rid of it). These things shed a ton of needles though - I’m wondering if snails will go after the fallen leaves? I won’t worry to keep up too quickly with the cleanup if they or other critters would munch on it.

I think if your tank already has beneficial bacteria, let it do it’s job and maybe don’t feed for a day so it can chew through it

This stuff is the Bain of my existence! I don’t mind the other algae, but this stuff is just ugly. I’ve been able to rip most of it out of my moss and ferns, which is pretty much just a temporary solution

that’s good to hear! I don’t mind having a bunch of little ones around to clean up, I just don’t want a tank of super big ones

They are super cool looking! Got these from aquahuna after seeing so many people here recommend them for shipping. Also got some neon green rasboras, which are super cool!

Haha, well, I haven’t added any plants to my tank in a while and haven’t had any snails running around. I added these snails last week. The babies are pretty small so can’t say for sure, but they certainly resemble their parents
-
Does anyone else keep these in a fairly small tank? I got a pair last week for my 20 gallon because they look so cool (and they do), but I have since found like 6 babies crawling around. I was under the impression these things won’t take over my tank - any insight?

That’s an awesome tank and cool fish

Mine eat cichlids pellets, shrimp meal pellets, pleco wafers, and leftover flakes. They can smell food from a mile away and go nuts before it hits the floor

Red Dwarf Aquarium Lilies from Bulbs
Pizzafan replied to Fish Folk's topic in Plants, Algae, and Fertilizers
I’m also really curious how these continue to develop after sprouting - planted this one from petco about a month ago and it grew insanely fast. Planted 2 - one was a dud that didn’t do anything. This pic is from a week ago, it’s already quite a bit bigger does the bulb eventually shrink or does it stay there? -
Good to hear! I’ll give this thing more time to see if it stays consistent for a while, then think about adding some more. It definitely looks like there is space for more swimmers, especially in the top half. The tank is pretty heavily planted (low light plants like Java ferns, moss, water lily), with a good number of hiding places. Also have a fluval 50 for the 20 gallon tank, so hoping that extra level of filtration helps

Hi All, i have a 20 long planted tank stocked with: 1 bolivian ram, 1 black lyretail molly, 2 zebra danios (I know, they prefer a school, but I really don’t want more 🙂 ), 4 Kuhli loaches and a nerite snail I’m starting to think this thing may be close to maxing out for a comfortable bioload, but is there some extra room here for a few more? Thinking a school of neon tetras would look awesome in there at some point, or maybe one more odd-ball mid level swimmer

Haha, no, the borough in NYC. A bit dirtier, I’d imagine!
