  1. Whatever heater you go with get a controller. I have Ink Bird controllers on all my tanks.
  2. Have you tested your water before you put into the tank? Are there plants in the tank? How big is the tank? The addition of one small fish (Oto) won’t change your water parameters. Finally you’re changing water too often. I wouldn’t be surprised if your cycle is screwed up because of the constant changes.
  3. I keep the sponge filter & heater running and throw a little food in for the bb when I remember.
  4. My 120 is a Discus community tank is 85F. All my smaller tanks house dwarf cichlids as the main fish and they’re @ 82F. I also use Inkbird controllers, so they allow me to program the heaters.
  5. I’ve been doing the AquaBid route since COVID shut everything down. I’ve gotten fish from sellers in Upstate NY, Iowa, Western PA, South Carolina, & Florida, plants and miscellaneous supplies from The CO OP in Washington. Considering the issues with the USPS everything except one shipment got here on time. The one that wasn’t on time showed up two days late. Thankfully that had no fish. I live in SE NC, not exactly the center of things.
  6. @ccurtis Apistos and Rams favor the same area of your tank, the bottom, so there may be some chasing. With that being said I grew out a pair of Apistogramma caucatoides in a 29 with 6 German Blues without many issues. Remember they are both cichlids.
  7. I’ve found that the choice of knives is a personal preference. The knife is an extension of your hand, pick what feels good in your hand and has a good blade buy the best you can afford. I have F. Dick, Sabatier, Wusthoff, Henckel, Forschner and Dexter. Some are carbon steel and stained others are high carbon stainless but they all hold an edge cut with little effort and feel right in my hand.
  8. @James V. AquaBid is an auction site so prices vary depending on species and the # of bidders. Shipping varies by the seller, who the shipping co they use is, the service level and the weight of the pkg. I suggest you check out the AquaBid site (it’s free) and follow some auctions, read the sellers blurb on the fish and shipping costs. When you’re ready register and bid on the fish you’re interested in.
  9. @Ken Burke I’ve had good luck finding Apistos on AquaBid. @James V. Corys work well for me. They also come from the same waters so they’ll be happy with the same parameters.
  10. I was wondering how I suddenly was The Quiet Type it’s not how people usually describe me😉
  11. I have an Ehiem Pro 3 on my 120. It’s been running pretty much non stop, except for cleaning and an impeller replacement for 4 yrs. I’ve at various times used Purigen, crushed coral, and extra polishing pads. You have some flexibility. During hurricane Florence we lost power for a couple of days. I used a rechargeable battery pack to run it until I could hook it up to the generator.
  12. Jack quarantine for at least week and do a full treatment cycle of General Cure and Ick X if you can’t do the full trio. Good luck.
  13. The water here is acidic, just the way they like it.
  14. I use a Python to do water changes straight from the tap. Sometimes I add the Prime (full dose for each tank) before, sometimes during and occasionally after filling the tanks with no ill effects. I think the idea is to just get it in the water asap.
  15. I use some especially in my taller tanks while waiting for the real plants to get some height on them.
  16. The danios may out compete the guppy’s for food and neither species really likes the water as warm as Angelfish do.
  17. I live in NC as well. Our water, especially in the eastern part of the state tends to be acidic. All my tanks naturally run @ 6.0pH as well. So I keep fish that like those conditions (mostly South American). I also put some crushed coral in my filters to buffer the water some.
  18. You’ll be fine. Most Apistogrammas like their water warm, think Discus warm. In their own tank I keep them at 82F but they’re equally happy in my Discus tank @ 85F. Good luck.
  19. Count on it. The soil works as a great insulator and it’s now on the south side of your house the sun will be in it all day. If you’re concerned about loosing heat during the winter put a piece of polycarbonate glazing over the top. It worked in my goldfish/koi pond in North NJ and it get’s a lot colder there in winter. Good luck.
  20. By surrounding the tub with soil the water temps should fluctuate less.
