  1. I have blasting sand in all of my tanks, and I prefer the medium grade; it just seems easier to plant in. Here's my senegals. I have 1 big wild type male and 1 little albino male 😄
  2. How exciting! I just use some airline tubing tied in a knot and it works just fine.
  3. 5 gal: 1 plakat betta and some pink ramshorns. Possibly some mutt neocaridina shrimp (I spot one now and then). 5 gal portrait: 1 pea puffer, malaysian trumpet snails 5 gal portrait: pink ramshorn snails and malaysian trumpet snails 20 long: bloody mary neocaridina shrimp, golden cobra endler/guppies, gold/chestnut mystery snails, pink ramshorns, malaysian trumpet snails 29 gal: 1 male(?) electric blue acara and a small colony of humpback limia 40 breeder: 1 female (?) featherfin catfish and some blue wag platies, 2 nerite snails, a million malaysian trumpet snails Edit: And a male red bristlenose. I can't believe I forgot to list Scruffy! 75 gal: 1 female blood parrot cichlid, 1 wild type male senegal bichir, 1 albino male senegal bichir, 1 male(?) ctenopoma, some pink ramshorns, malaysian trumpet snails, a nerite or two.
  4. Maybe golden wonder killifish? But I'd personally just remove the guppies myself and put them up on Craig's List rather than add a predator since you don't want extra bioload. See if there's a local aquaswap for your area on Facebook or Reddit (or just post on the main aquaswap subreddit and see if anyone's nearby).
  5. After dinner, when all the tank lights are on. If I'm just hanging out and watching movies or Youtube, I'll often just listen to what's on while I'm watching the fish.
  6. Those are snail eggs of some sort. Ramshorns, pond snails and bladder snails all lay similar egg clusters.
  7. Schoutedeni puffer. I would love to have one, but the price tag is a little daunting. Also I just don't have space at the moment. But some day!
  8. It's never guaranteed your betta will stay the colors he was when purchased. Many change color once settled in, and some have a "marbling gene" that causes them to change color and pattern their entire lives. I had a white plakat who turned red and blue/grey as he grew older. (he also developed a tumor on his head) Yours is a pretty little guy, good luck with him!
  9. Swim bladder in bettas are most commonly caused by a bacterial infection. Make sure the water is warm and clean: 78-80F and less than 20 nitrates. You can dose the tank with erythromycin to help clear up any infection.
  10. Have you tested the water parameters in the tank? It might be a good idea just to see what the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels are.
  11. The UV sterilizer came in last night, and I just set it up. I decided on this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07V26V5MS?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details It's huge compared to the tank, but it won't be a permanent fixture. I didn't hook up the air since I have two sponge filters running in this tank, and I tried to position it so the water flow won't be too strong. First attempt and the suction cups immediately gave up; I didn't scrape the glass down so that's on me. It's making a duckweed root whirlpool. I've had duckweed die off from low nutrients - been water changing every day for a week because of Ich-X. I should pull that hornwort out too since it looks like it's unhappy. Looks like the suction cups have given out again since I took this pic and the sterilizer is now resting against the sponge filter at an angle. I'm sure that's fine. This has been a rollercoaster of emotions. The limia will look much better one evening, only for me to find them looking worse the next morning. This girl has the worst of it right now: I don't even know if the Ich-X is doing much at this point. At least Tesla the acara seems unaffected still.
  12. I love jungley tanks! I tend to plant random things and see what takes off.
  13. Finally got an Inkbird on this tank! I also upped the air just to get a better temperature consistency from water flow, so I'm sure more green tribbles will be growing soon. Took this pic the other night before stealing some val to put into another tank. This is how it looks now. I noticed the endler/guppies (endlies?) like to hang out in the open spots, so I cleared a bit in the front. Also gives the mystery snails a path. I love how the val grew around the driftwood here. And I thought the way this mystery snail was napping was cute, with its feelers all spiraled. It was rudely awoken by that ramshorn a few moments later.
  14. I'd first make sure it isn't your water parameters via a water test just to check off that box. I'm not familiar with T.Ellioti (quick Google search says it's a South American cichlid). I'm assuming soft water is appropriate for it? Could it be getting bullied by any of the other inhabitants? Another possibility is gill flukes, which causes respiration issues, but I would make sure all the "simple" answers are checked first before trying medication.
  15. That is an absolutely gorgeous tank! Welcome to the forum!
  16. I think adding nitrates wouldn't do anything other than just helping the plants grow, which in turn will help lower ammonia. But it wouldn't help grow the beneficial bacteria you need, that just takes time.
  17. A Synodontis eupterus (featherfin catfish) named Pooka.
  18. I see bichirs! ❤️ Welcome to the forum!
  19. Gosh they are so pretty. Congrats! I hope you get tons of babies.
