jkt001
If you had to choose one schooling/shoaling fish for a 15 gallon tank, regardless of price, what would you choose? There are just so many options. I am going to add a school of 8 to my tank with sparkling gourami's, but I wanted everyone's opinions first. What have been your favorites??? Thanks everyone! Kat_Rigel
Personally, I like Beckford's pencilfish., but there are quite a lot of schooling fish to choose from. I have wanted to try penguin tetras for a while now, they kind of "stand" when they rest and it looks really cool. There's also the classic neon or cardinal tetras if you're looking for color. I recommend picking something with a small mouth so you can have a shrimp colony in there too. 2

Yes the original plan was just to get some neon tetras, because they are so cheap, but I then realized I don't want the reason I get a fish to be because I can save 20 bucks. I have researched so many at this point, but other peoples experiences are so helpful. Thank you, I will check out the Beckford's pencilfish. Patrick_G
If you bought a smaller fish like Chili Rasboras you could fit in a larger school 😀
Maggie
I'd try neon green rasboras (Microdevario kubotai). They're tiny and look awesome in a school. I love all rasboras.

Patrick_G
Maybe someone more experienced will reply, but I know they only grow to about 3/4”. I’d say at least 12 but someone please correct me if I’m wrong.

I watched a video recently that said that sparkling gouramis are much less secretive if you have a "school" of them, like 6+.
Tetra Guy
My favorite small schoolers are Pristella Tetras. Not as tight a formation as the Rummynose though...
Tetra Guy
And they will peacefully cohabitate with sparkling gouramis...

MAC
Ember tetras. They are on the smaller side and have great color. Plus you afford to get a nice group for a relatively low price. Edited February 8, 2021 by MAC
Tetra Guy
I love Embers! Very chill fish. Have a 10g species only in my kitchen, usually the only aquarium that guests see. But Embers tend to congregate or shoal, rather than school.

FrozenFins
A big school of neon tetras or silvertip tetras look stunning in a planted tank! Here is a video of a STUNNNING video of neon tetras schooling

Streetwise
@Fish Folk, Nice! I love those underrated tetras. I think I have room to add more to my Askoll 20.
BlackLabelCarling
Even though they are shoaling fish, I would pick a coryora, maybe a pygmy. I just love the way they move together and when they aren't swimming they post up in a little group 🥺❤️ 2

Harpsandfish
I love my green neon tetras and will be getting more; they look awesome with the lamb chop rasboras!
Scayuga
Since you already have the gouramis i would get a school that occupies a different area of the tank. I like Rummy Nose Tetras, Harlequins,or certainly even the Neon Tetras.
JJB
Do you guys think the chili rasboras, green neons or harlequins would make it in a community tank that has 2 platinum angel fish as well?
Colu
Chili rasbora and green neon are on the small side they might get eaten by the angelfish I think harlequins would be ok @JJB
